    But what to buy?

  • any recommendation?

they have a bunch of vita games too, now just gotta find a list of what games can work with no Japanese knowledge haha

  • Good, I want to buy some car speakers from japan

  • Hi I'm new to Rakuten, I have a couple of items from different stores. Question is, do you need to make separate payments by store?

    • +1

Yes. Rakuten doesn't actually process the payment, if forwards the payment details on to the store you're purchasing from and that store processes the payment.

      • thanks mate, I proceeded to checkout and the shipment shows "—" do I have to pay first and the store sends me the shipping rates later?

        • +3

It might depend on the store you're purchasing from. My experience has always been that the store just charges the shipping fee without bothering to inform me what it is… but I've only ever had orders shipped within Japan (to a shipping forwarder) and the shipping fees within Japan are typically flat rate (and either fairly cheap or free).

You can usually find out what the shipping will cost within Japan by looking at the info page for each store, but because of the variable cost of international shipping based on package weight there's no way to find out exactly how much it will cost in advance.

For the kind of items I buy off Rakuten, this current discount isn't worth using because of the restriction that it has to be sent directly to a non-Japanese address. There's a far larger range of goods available and better pricing from stores that only ship to Japanese addresses, and forwarding services can actually be cheaper than having the store ship directly to Australia, even before taking advantage of frequent Rakuten shipping discounts for forwarding services.

        • @uvbunny: cheers buddy, very informative

        • @uvbunny: any good forward services you could recommend?

        • +1

          @alwayseric:

Tenso Japan is by far the cheapest at the moment. They're even offering free package consolidation until the end of May. Tenso.com offer a somewhat more 'premium' level of service, but you'll pay a lot more for it.

There's a current promotion (ends this Friday) for a ¥2,000 shipping discount off ¥15,000 Rakuten purchases: http://tensojapan.jshoppers.com/rakucam.asp?page=idx160418

¥3,000 shipping discounts have been quite common, but the current ¥2,000 discount can be claimed multiple times according to Tenso Japan.

Be aware that with any Japanese shipping forwarder you'll need to provide (via upload or email) a copy of appropriate photo id to prove your identity before they're allowed to actually forward anything on to you.

        • @uvbunny: thanks a lot!! bookmarked!

        • @uvbunny:
Tenso Japan say they wont accept items from auctions? eg yahoo?
Wasnt there another company that will buy/bid on my behalf?
Seem to recall a big banner at the top of yahoo auctions.

        • @nowlan:
You're referring to buyee http://buyee.jp/?lang=en Tenso is their parent company
There are a lot of those services out there.

Haven't tried buyee before, But I have tried the following:
          http://www.fromjapan.co.jp/en/
          https://www.bidjdm.com/

        • @nowlan:
That's correct, Tenso Japan state they will only forward packages from online shopping sites. Tenso.com has no such restriction, or you could use a buying service such as those mentioned by CityEnd.

If you do use a buying service make sure you understand all the fees you'll be up for. With Buyee it's mainly the service fee and the plan fee, but there's also a hidden currency conversion fee since they bill you in your local currency rather than JPY (even though some of their help pages still say otherwise). Their currency conversion probably adds around 3-5% to your total cost compared to default VISA/Mastercard rates.

  • +8

the shitting cost is too high

    • +5

      Damn that custom dictionary..

    • my shits are always free.

    • They always use EMS shipping which you can get your items in Australia within 3-4 days. That's why the shipping is too high.

  • I bought a watch Seiko from a store on Rakuten. Fast delivery, cheaper than I could find elsewhere without being worried about a fake. +1

  • Tenso is having a shipping discount promo at the moment too (great for products that do not ship internationally) - wonder if both this and the Tenso deal can be stacked???

    http://media.tenso.com/campaign/rakuten160418/en/

    • +4

They can't be stacked, one requires shipping to a non-Japanese address, the other requires shipping to a shipping forwarder in Japan.

BTW, if you want to use a Japanese shipping forwarder with Rakuten, I'd recommend checking out Tenso Japan, rather than Tenso.com (different companies, in spite of the similar names). Tenso.com is the better service, but Tenso Japan has much better pricing and still gets the job done.

      • +1

thanks, was not aware there was a Tenso Japan! Will check it out.

  • Good for cosmetics if there's any on there

  • Good for certain music equipment also (especially Japanese brands such as KORG) much cheaper than local even taking into account shipping

  • Anyone know if this code can be used multiple times by the same account?
I can't find any "1 per customer" terms listed.

  • When I get paid this week, gunna get some new shoes!

  • Searching for Jap Eneloops :D

  • How come 1 Nissin cup noodle sell for $37?
UPDATE:Rakuten didnt display the quantity on the item, in the original store website it displayed as 20 cup

  • So, am I right in assuming the 10,000yen minimum spend is before shipping?

    • +1

      yes

      1. Shipping costs, gift wrapping fees, and import duties (if any) will not be counted toward the purchase amount of your order.

Edit: that was meant to be 5.(Five) don't know why it format it to 1.

  • Thanks OP! Bought Received this nice looking/feeling arcade joystick from AmiAmi store. :)

¥13070 + shp ¥7080 (-¥3000)= ¥17150. Yes the EMS shipping is the killer.
