Windows Phone 10 ROM Flash instruction

Only Mi4 LTE model support Windows 10 ROM, so this is quite a good price for 2GB Windows 10 phone with very good specs, camera and very good battery life. This is officially supported by Microsoft so you will have a stable Windows 10 ROM.

This is the flagship phone not the budget Redmi product line, with the official Windows 10 on this phone, it beats any other Windows 10 deal!!!

Cons: No NFC, so you won't be able to use your CBA, NAB mobile banking NFC feature.
- No LTE band 28 (700Mhz), so you won't be able to take advantage of the so-called 4GX (Telstra)/ 4G Plus (Optus)

    Was $319.99? LOL

    • It's also available on Aliexpress for $173 including shipping. Someone who is keen on a small saving may be interested.

    • Nextbuying update price $138.98 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/243354

    • Replying to top in case someone checks back on this bargain.

Received my Mi4 from Vickmall today. Haven't actually put a sim in it though.

Received the following in addition to Xiaomi phone box:
      AU adapter for the charger
      Gel style cover
      glass screen protector
      plastic screen protector
      Pre-protector screen cleaner

Cardboard packaging is fine – feels deliberately eco-friendly rather than just plain cheap.

You get a US pronged 110-240 charger that's about 5cm long, and an AU plug adapter that extends it another 2-3cm. Total dimensions about 8x2x3cm + prongs. It's 2 amp with detachable cable.
Doesn't feel safe to have plugged in. I'll be reusing an old one.

Windows 10 installed fine as per these instructions. Updated to latest version without issues – 10.0.10586.218.

No real delays navigating menus and apps, seems fast enough. FHD display is really nice.

Physically it looks and feels like a larger iphone 5 – but it's off just enough that you can tell it's a lower-tier brand. Like the top speaker grille mesh is not mounted straight. Side buttons have a bit of lateral movement. The white plastic in the headphone socket and the antenna breaks in the metal surround aren't as white as the front and back – I think they'll yellow with age.

The back is comfortably curved. It has quite a nice subtle grid pattern to it and looks better in person than on review site pictures, but I ordered a wood back from ebay anyway since it's a bit slippery.

Naked, the display seems crazy fingerprint-prone compared to iPhones.

      Installed:
      • Kindle
      • Audible
      • Spotify
      • Fitbit
      • MyFitnessPal
      • CommBank – did not expect this to even exist.
      • eBay
      • PayPal
      • Telstra 24x7 – oddly, it's nicer than the iOS version.
      • Domino's
      • MS Podcasts
      • Parcel Tracker - for DHL / fedex / etc.

      App-gap:
      • No Macquarie Bank app that I could find.

      All-in-all… optimistic.

      • Did you switch from iPhone to this? If so, which iPhone did you have? And can I ask why?

        • Basically, it's a backup phone while my iPhone is in for a minor repair - the rear camera won't focus.

I currently have an iPhone 6 Plus. An iPhone 5 before that, and an iPhone 4 before that. All on a 24-month contract upgrade cycle. At the end of the year, it would have been time to upgrade again.

I have no issues with the iPhone, but it's a thousand dollar phone. I didn't notice much of a difference going from iPhone 5 to 6+ (apart from size), and I don't see what the next generation could really add.

The Mi4 was an inexpensive way to see if I could manage comfortably outside the Apple ecosystem. It lets me try both Android and Win10 on a decent spec device - using a $30 cheapie from Woolie's won't give you a fair assessment of the competition.

It wasn't meant to be a long-term replacement, and it won't be… but only because the 5" screen is too small.

Bottom line: After seeing what $200 gets you these days, I won't be spending $1200+ on an iPhone 7+ when it comes out.

      • I tried to go through the instructions you mentioned there but I am getting stuck on the cmd prompt. I am getting error 'system cannot find path specified'

  • At this price, it is even cheaper than cost price from buying direct on xiaomi website. I guess they are clearing stocks.

    • +3

The model is two years old.

But a flagship model from 2014 is still pretty decent in 2016.

      • I saw some 3GB model for $70USD more which is not really worth it. 2GB is still decent to run latest Android 6. Mi Phone got hugh community so there will always be custom ROM for old models.

  • +3

I ordered one of these the other day to play with Windows 10. Still in transit though.

    Additional cons:
    * No fingerprint reader.
    * No LTE band 28 - 700MHz

    • +5

I'd rather buy this phone instead of Windows 10 phone with just 1GB RAM. In case if Windows 10 is abandoned you still can use it as a good Android phone.

      • +2

Hmm cheap win 10 phone with 1080p….only reason went to android was no cheap win 10 with 1080p screen

      • +3

        That was my plan exactly.

I temporarily used a win8 phone and I much preferred the UI with tiles instead of icons. If the app gap turns out to be too annoying, I'll give android a try - but I'm fairly determined to skip out on iPhone.

I've been on iOS for 6 years, and I really don't use it enough to justify another $1200 when the iPhone 7+ comes out in 6 months.

        • +5

Keep using your old iPhone and don't buy the new one?

        • +2

          @GordonR:
That sounds like the financially prudent option.

          However…

I currently have an iPhone 6 Plus, which I could sell second-hand and have enough money to buy a handful of these phones.

If I can live with Android or Windows phones, that's the better option.

          ETA:
(selling is the better option, not buying a handful of phones)

        • +1

          @KentT:

(selling is the better option, not buying a handful of phones)

Exactly, think about how many eneloops & cheap SSD you can buy

    • +6

I am using the best prepaid plan ever in Australia so 4G is not necessary for me :) I got 6Mbps on Optus HSPA+ 900Mhz, my friend even got speed of 23Mbps on Optus 3G HSPA+

This SIM worths a fortune now, the legendary "$2 day 3G Optus prepaid" with Unlimited Calls/SMS/Mobile Internet. I have disconnected my crappy ADSL2+ with constant drop out and use this instead.

      • You have unlimited mobile data for 2 bucks a day? o.0

        • +1

Yep ;) stupid me I didn't think to keep it back then even though I still managed to activate 1 SIM after Optus removed the plan. I had to buy this SIM for few hundred dollars. Lots of scammer on Gumtree try to sell these SIM though…

        • @samehada: optus sent me an email saying they cancelled my sim some months after they removed the plan. Is your still activated?

        • @samehada: I'm actually on the Optus $500 Calls/Texts and 5GB 3G data for $26/45days / $52/3months
Getting sick of the crappy 3G service in Sydney, probably gonna move to a SIM-only 4G plan with 10/11GB data or something

  • Whoa Windows 10 on that? That's pretty cool!
    Dual boot though?

    • +5

Nope, it's either or. But it is officially supported by Microsoft.

      • +1

Officially supported by Microsoft?! That's impresive. Why don't they sell any variants that come with it pre-installed then I wonder?

        • +2

Based on sales I imagine, win 10 wouldn't be popular on phone.

        • -1

          Impressive*

    • +2

No dual boot, you need to run either Android or Win10

    • I have heared Mi 5 is going to receive win10 as well.

      • +2

yep, but Mi 5 price is expensive and I'd rather run that specs with Android :)

  • +1

Can this play .exe file and display flash website like a real Windows 10 OS?

    • +3

      Does flash but not .exe

      • +1

Does that mean it supports 'metro' apps? TBH I've lost track of the windows phone strategy and I don't know what it runs.

        • +2

It supports Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps that choose to support Windows 10 Mobile. In other words, some 'metro' apps will work, but not all. A decent overview is here, but I admit it is confusing and hard to keep track of: http://www.windowscentral.com/what-is-a-universal-windows-ap…

For example, Groove Music on Windows 10 is now at feature parity with Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10.

      • It does not support Flash - but few sites require Flash any longer.

        • Yep, but some old sites do. One of my favourites is http://www2.b3ta.com/youcantspell/ which sadly won't work without flash as far as I know.

One of the best on b3ta is Tramp O Claus - wrong season obviously. I remember my sister thought that the bit at the end was a personal message to her when I sent her the link back in the day. She was, you could say, not too chuffed.

    • +1

It doesn't have an x86 processor and a desktop if that's what you are asking.

    • Sounds like you are better off getting a cheap Windows 10 Chinese tablet :)

  • +1

3G: WCDMA 850/900/1900/2100MHz has been my holy grail and thumbs up to this one on that score, but they've moved the goalposts, to mix a metaphor or three, and now I discover I need 4G 700MHz too.

    • 4g band 3 has pretty good metro coverage.

      • This newfangled 4G thing is for improving internet speed isn't it? I may be completely wrong there- not following events closely.

So lack of 4G 700 only affects those interested in regional internet speed, no? Will the lack 4G 700 affect regional reception, either phone or internet?

        • In my testing I get about 1/4 the speed on Telstra on my phone without band 28 vs my G4 that has band 28 support.

        • @Ronnnie: Yes but that means little due to different devices being used. Devices have better/worse antennae relatively for example.

  • If you using windows 10 it won't matter about the no nfc for commbank app. ;)

Good choice for those that must have windows phone and want midrange specs at a budget price. You cant go wrong. Only other alternative for windows phones fans are 930 or 1520.

    • +3

So you are saying the phone hardware offers complete support for all CommBank apps available on the win platform ;-)

      • +3

I don't think any banks in Australia even bother to update their Windows apps, you need to use Android to fully utilise it. You won't be able to use NFC on iPhone because Apple won't let 3rd party access there NFC.

        • +1

Commbank is one of the few with a surprisingly good WP app.

        • @cheesecactus: Yeah their Android app is pretty nice so that doesn't surprise me.

    • +1

true… lol… All because of that cheap bast*rd CEO Lei Jun, he has decided to dropped NFC on Mi4 because no less than 1% Chinese users using it.

      • Same with the Oneplus Two has dropped NFC because 'nobody uses this feature' where my OnePlus One has it. Upgrade? I think not!

    • How does this compare for the price/specs to other newer phones if only interested in a 5 inch Android ?

      • +1

very decent specs, similar to LG G3, you won't have problem running Android Marshmallow 6

      • Very similar in terms of specs/performance/price to the Redmi 3 (not the "Redmi Note 2/3"). The Redmi 3 has a 5" screen with a newer CPU but it has similar performance to the older chip in the mi4.

I went with getting a mi4 because it has an official Global ROM available, whereas the Redmi 3 does not (at least not yet anyway).

        • Not true. The Mi4's 801 is at least 20-30% faster than the 616 on the Redmi 3, not to mention a much better GPU.

        • Redmi is budget line, so in term of hardware, Mi4 has better quality hardware spec, i.e material, GPU…

  • +2

    http://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_mi_4-6518.php

    No Sd card

    Only 16 gig of memory

I wonder if there is a deal on the 64 gig version

  • +1

Do ANY of the Xiaomi phones support 4G 700MHz?

  • +2

    no dual sim…

    • So? You planning on only using this for 7 months?

  • Is there way.. Or a mobile app that tells you what band you are currently using?

    • There are apps but you can also look this up by dialing numbers that begin with #hash - google your phone model.

  • How it compare to second hand Lumia 930 at very similar price .

    • I think Lumia 930 has better spec, but again you are comparing 2nd vs brand new. Lumia 930 can't run Android ;)

    • Lumia 930 is obviously a much better choice if you only plan to run Windows 10 on it.

If you aren't sure and would like the option to flash to Android, then the Mi 4 is the obvious choice.

However the Lumia 930 is a well built phone with 32GB of memory, Qi wireless charging, a very good camera and hardware keys. My Lumia 930 I bought in 2014 is still going strong and most 2nd hand Lumia's would have part of their 2 year warranty still.

  • I dont know if it just me but I see all these china droids and think they are great speced but when I look at the lte bands it is a massive disappointment.
I know for the price you pay its bloody good but yeh my note 2 has better lte bands and also my zte fit 4g has hits the sweet spot with lte.

  • Is this variant officially supported by cyanogenmod?

    I see listed:

    http://get.cm/?device=cancro

    • is this that phone?

If so could be worth it for that alone.

  • +1

So I assume MS and Nokia have parted ways

    • iirc, ms only had license to use the nokia name for a specific amount of time. they can continue using lumia.

again this is off the top of my head, google is your friend.

      • Yes but I'm pretty sure that Nokia was also required to use MS OS only on their phones.

    • MS brought Nokia's phone business (including the real low end phones). US$8 billion of it. Then about a year later wrote it off, and most of the ~100k staff have been made redundant. MS's license to use the Nokia name for branding (mobiles only) ceased last year.

MS largely given up on Windows mobile phones - will keep making a few, but isn't discounting like it used to - coz, you know, losing lots of money per phone to keep a minimal marketshare doesn't make any sense. They're now largely hoping that they can get in on the next big revolution - and throwing a few ideas at the wall (eg Continuum) to see if something can stick.

Nokia is still around mainly doing back-end networking stuff. Licensed their name out for an Android tablet last year. They might license their name for someone to make mobiles in the future.

      • Nokia, as far as I remember, still has fair bit of patents (at least so I've heard). MS didn't buy off the patents, but rather given exclusive rights to use them for several years I believe? Don't quote me on it though, I am not too certain on this for many reasons, one being that the read I had was from internet. That said, if it is true, I would be excited for Nokia branded Android phones in future (if they decide to come back). That said, since they did sold off the mobile part of their company, they'd probably do what they did with N1 (OEM? ODM? whatever it is called).

MS could've really up the game several years ago in my opinion. Windows 10 Mobile should've arrived at least when 8.1 was released. MS under Nadella, has been more cautious with the phone in my opinion (to an extent where I want to say "Why not just pull out?"). Nadella in my opinion don't want to make Windows Mobile into a platform by giving it exclusive access to MS softwares and giving it similar advantage like MacOS and iOS integration, given how he's been doing (i.e. first thing he did was MS Office support for iOS I believe? Something similar to that). Cortana became available to other OSs etc etc.

In my opinion, MS is keeping Windows Phone for reasons other than immediate profit. I don't know what it could be, but MS could've easily given Windows Phone an advantage by integrating Windows Phone and Windows OS experience long time ago in my opinion.

I hate saying this but even Samsung provided better integration of UX with Android with their Sidesync (i.e. being able to control your phone via PC, receiving and sending calls, receiving notifications etc) when I was using my old Lumia 925 and Surface Pro 1. My point is MS could've done better earlier.

  • -5

Xiaomi is good for the portable batteries and earphones only. Their phones are a joke. 16GB and no sim-slot? I understand Apple as they are niche market, but this is Android market and you are expecting users to use 16gb only?

    • +3

Have you used xiaomi? Your comments about xiaomi phone is wrong. These phones are value for money n no you can't compare it with Apple. Apple is expensive phone is my opinion.

      • -1

It is the storage I am finding it a joke for Android phone. That's all.

        • +1

I also find it a joke to to criticise Xiaomi when you only spend $180 for a 16GB phone. I know 16Gb is a joke but not at $180. Just like 7-11 $1 coffee is never a joke at $1!

    • Apple is a niche market? What are you smoking?

  • Is there any offer on Huawei P8…
    I missed MSY offer…
Main drawback with Xiaomi Mi4 model is it doesnt have an option to expand memory.. we get to use max of 10 to 11GB out of 16GB…

  • Just my 2 cents:
I have the Mi4i, which is extremely similar to the Mi4 with very minor differences. Been using this phone now for a while and am quite astonished to see the mi4 at this price! a true bargain.
I had a Galaxy S5 prior to that phone and to be frank the price difference between the two is hard to justify.
This phone is responsive, plenty of grunt, excellent camera & I would highly recommend it to anyone as i don't really feel the need to upgrade it what so ever.
You get alot of bang for your dollar with this phone and that's for sure
Xiaomi has become my brand of choice.

  • -4

Xiaomi is rubbish, best to go for Oppo, Lenovo or Huawei or even Elephone

    • +3

you cant put elephone in the same sentence as the rest mentioned.

    • interesting, any feedback about that tvc-mall?

Grand Total: USD - $ 129.87 (including shipping and 3% surcharge for Paypal)

To be honest, I am really worried about the contaminated ROM on phones bought from these website, including the site I posted. Sometimes it can have trojans and virus embedded. What I plan to do is to do a complete clean flash myself with ROM download from trusted source, i.e MIUI forum or XDA.

Secondly, there are FAKE Xiaomi Mi4 out there, so I will look up for more information regarding it and updated my post. Always pay with Paypal and file chargeback if you receive a fake one.

      • how do i do a clean flash for MIUI?

    • +1

It seems the site that you posted is not trustworthy
      https://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=201111051719…

For $10USD cheaper, I'd rather not to take the risk…

  • Was considering this a few weeks back, limited storage options, lack of a fingerprint scanner and patchy 4G reception made me get the Redmi 3 pro instead (which still has band support problems).

  • Bought one, thanks OP. I wonder how long it takes to arrive in VIC

  • Deal finished?

    • seems the price went back up…

  • Any black available?

  • I have an extra now if anyone missed out.
