I find this interesting. PS had this free as part of their PS Plus monthly games. And here, they release this free in general. Following suite to what telltale have done with their series, first episode free and all.

    • +3

I think most episodic games offer the first episode free to hook you. It's bullshit Sony and MS are offering them as part of their subscription packages.

Frankly, PS+ has gone downhill ever since PS+ became necessary for multiplayer.

      • find it frustrating the fact you have renew it to keep playing the games, prefer the live keep it forever thing.

        • +1

Live is only keep it forever for 360, for xb1 you need active live sub

        • @natslovR:Damn them!! Loll

Chapter 2 is also free on Xbox 360… but you must use the Great Britain store link.

      • legend, thanks

      • Chapter 2 is also free directly on the Xbox Marketplace on the console itself (which is how I had to get both free chapters, since Microsoft's site won't let you grab free games without adding a payment method, for some dumb reason!)

heh, Kings Quest 5 was one of the only games the missus has ever played with me on the PC. it was SOOO awesome in the day it made me lash out a couple of hundred bucks on an 8-bit soundblaster card. Was a bit rich as I'd only recently spent 3K on my pentium 33Mhz box. Must have been the late eighties I guess but I always remember that game as being a helluva lot of fun. And then came Sam'n'Max and I had to spend about $400 on a 2xCDrom in order to play that too. :)

8bit sound? Are we in the future?!

    • +1

I can't believe I'm admitting this, beside the original SoundBlaster sound card, I also bought the "Roland SCC1" midi card which cost more than the sound card itself. But well worth it during that time, I fully enjoyed with not only Kings Quest series but also Space Quest, Hero's Quest, Leisure Suit Larry and the awesome "Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist"… those were the good days of PC RPG gaming.

        +1 Space Quest.

        Roger Wilco lol.

The whole Sierra franchise was amazing. Amiga 500 FTW
I really should go back and play them again!

          Sonny Bonds!

Pursuit of Death Angel. Who has played (and clocked) that?

        • +1

I had that on a IBM XT, 20MB Hard Disk with a CGA monitor (4 colours for the youngsters) and was stumped forever on typing in the correct words to conduct a DUI test. Ah the memories.

Forgot to calibrate the radar gun … AGAIN. :(

      • +1

I had to make do with an AdLib card back then, being just a poor high school student. But the Sierra games didn't have impressive music, at least not the earlier ones. Lemmings and Day of the Tentacle were much better.

    • +1

Looking at the remastered Days of Tentacle, I think there is still a place for dialogue puzzle game / adventure.

Space Quest is one hard game to crack as an example.

Who would have thought that you would have to cheat to pass your exam which is at the very first beginning of the game????

      • +1

Space Quest 5? Not exactly the best in the series, but it was still Space Quest.

    • Sam and max was funnier on disk. The voice acting of the cd version was fine but it took away the extra spontaneity of reading the text (even though the text was still displayed)

I've played through about 5 times. Even bought the German disk version for the collectors piece that comes with it. So with some authority I say turn voices off on the cd version.

Hope I didn't give you buyer's remorse for buying a cd drive 20 years ago :)

The original King's Quest was an AGI game on the PCjr. First version of it that I had, you had to boot off the floppy, and wasn't even run from DOS.

  • Anyone having issues with their gold accounts? Xbox support saod theres an issue going on at the moment where users have paid for their gold account however it isnt registering they have a gold subscription.

  • This is a great game. A lot of fun. Well worth the purchase (I still haven't gotten around to playing episode 2 though)

Wow.so this is how they can make extra money from suckers by chopping a game into chapters. … ffs what next….

Im happy that my emulator box is still kickin along.

    • +1

Doesn't cost any more to buy the full game. Retail was around $60 all up for about 20 odd hours of game play.

The great thing about episodic games is you can try it out on the cheap. I paid $13 or something for Ep 1. Least if it sucked I wouldn't have blown a huge amount.

      • Not a big fan of this though. It feels like it's a way to make extra cash rather then a lump sum.

        • It's normally adventure games that are split into episodes. They are kind of a niche genre so by selling it as chapters they can fund better art/music for the later chapters and make money while working on the game. Normally episode 1 is either made available free around episode 3 or practically given away in steam sale / humble bundle. If you like episode 1 buy the complete pack :)

        • So you'd be ok if they just sold the game for $60 but not in episodes for $60 total?

        • @SirFlibbled: say they sell each chapter for $20 and there are 4 chapters.
this is a tactic to charge a larger total cost as apposed to a large lump sum but being spread across the chapters the consumers will not feel as if they are spending much.

in game purchasing ring a bell too?

would you buy a game that is small in game play and pay a premium price for ?

        • @Hotkolbas: You can buy the game in episodes individually ($13 an episode) (For $65 total), Episode 1 separately + the rest of the game (season pass) (for $60 total) or all 5 episodes as a pack for $60).

You're right it is a tactic, but as long as they give you cheaper options then I'm ok with it. Fact is, once you've played Episode 1, you know if you're going to like the game or not. I'd be shocked how many people would buy the game as individual episodes for this reason. That being said, people on a budget can pay $13 every few months and play the episodes if that's their choice, like buying a fridge on repayments - it'll cost you a little more but less up front.

As I said before, I'd rather outlay $13 to play a good chunk of the game to decide if I like it or not and not have to outlay a larger amount. I bought the Division, played it for 2 hours and haven't touched it for weeks. I wasted $60.

Personally I'm less of a fan of ingame pricing. I love Star Wars Battlefront but refuse to pay the outrageous price of the season pass.

How do I type in >LOOK on my xbox controller ?

This is a perfect game for young kids. Older kids not so much as it's unbearably easy to play. That said it's possibly one of the best presented and most entertaining games I've played in a long time.

  • Want there a remake on pc? I seem to recall downloading a KQ1 remake and there was a KQ2 that was a work in progress.

  • Even though I purchased it, King's Quest - Chapter 2: Rubble Without A Cause is now appearing full priced.

Guess whatever the glitch was, they fixed it and retrospectively removed episode 2 from people.

    • They did too… Chapter 2 isn't showing in my purchase history. Damn.
