  • this is targeted - says I'm not eligible…

  • Worked for me, definitely helpful, status is the hardest to accrue.

  • Awesome! Just about to book flights anyway.

    Many thanks OP.

For those chasing status credits there are some very good runs to Jakarta from ADL or CBR. Almost Gold in 1 trip for $2,500 (or plat in two trips)

Silver Little benefit. 1 free lounge pass when you acquire silver. A bit of extra baggage. meh

Gold Biggest jump in benefits, lounge access is very good and includes the oneworld lounges. hefty increase in baggage allowances, plus they'd probably wave fees if you were a few Kgs over. Much better upgrade chances. Priority domestic security and domestic/intl boarding (very handy for securing space in the overhead lockers). Much more avail for award point bookings. Bags might be tagged priority, but this has virtually no impact on when they come out of the baggage claim. Lounge access is also good because you can chat to the lounge staff about seating, typically far nicer than the check-in staff. (i.e. they might try and find you an empty row in econ so you can sleep)

Plat Ok, not a huge jump from Gold. IMO certainly not worth spending a lot of money chasing Status Credits. Pick just about any seat for free. Lounges are nicer but you get over them quickly. Have always been upgraded (when I request with points, although never complimentary). More baggage allowance than you could ever use, and they would probably wave any fees if you were over. Express pass access on international flights (handy overseas, but Australia is not so much of a benefit now they have the auto-gates, although it can be VERY handy when the quarantine lines go mental). Bags tagged as First Class, which means they have a small chance at coming out of the baggage claim first (and stops other people mistaking your bag and taking it. Probably also makes it a great target for any thieving baggage handlers, yes this happens). Priority phone queue, I've never had to wait to speak to someone.

Plus plat has some more little un-advertised benefits,

        • Flying international economy you always get a few flight attendants coming to shake your hand throughout the flight, a bit weird but I guess it's better than being ignored. If you do ask for something or press a call button they'll typically stop whatever they're doing and come running, also weird.
        • Similar to gold but they're more likely to be accommodating on any requests you might have.
        • Any disruptions to your trip will normally have a case manager sorting out alternatives for you, before you even know it.
        • Heaps of availability for award point bookings, plus you can call and talk to priority staff who usually accommodate you.
        • Major unadvertised benefit is that award point bookings are somewhat flexible. I've had to change an award flight a few times, never had to pay a fee or pay extra points. Even when the tickets for booking same day flight were $700, i was able to change my 8,000 point award booking and get a ticket.

But you are right in pointing out that $800 buys you Qantas Club membership, which is very similar to Gold. Just wont get access to oneworld lounges etc. Personally I'd never take a flight just for the status points, but some do. Most of the benefits center around convince, which is very hard to put a value on for an individual. If I had to put a value on it, then I'd say Silver was worth $50(what you can get when you sell the lounge pass), Gold worth $1,000 and Platinum maybe $1,600. But it's very subjective and all depends on how much you fly.

Great overview. A couple of things to add:

          • As QF Platinum, I flew this past weekend 2 days before my birthday. i was presented w/ 2 mini bottles of champers and an amenity kits, along w/ a handwritten birthday card (flying just economy to Perth) It was a nice touch.
          • I think you're downplaying lounge access a bit, especially if you're traveling internationally and have never been platinum. It's a whole different class of lounge (SYD International F lounge makes most top 5 lists of best in the world.) Generally, you get access to the best lounges in the One World network and is a pretty handy benefit if you go abroad a lot.
          • Platinum gives you 25% more QPoints. This can pay off, depending on your travel plans.
          • No real way to measure it, but I do think your calls to Qantas get picked up that much faster. I believe they segment the queue based on status, but this hasn't been proven as fact AFAIK (just my feeling; never wait when I call.)
          • Platinum One is generally considered not worth the $$$ and is really only the province of serious international business travelers.

Also, once you get the status, it becomes easier to re-qualify later years, as it takes a bit less points.

Generally speaking, Gold is the sweet spot. In addition, if you go to the states a lot, QClub membership does allow you to access AA lounges (which aren't all that great) when flying AA domestically, outside of your OneWorld status.

TLDR: Gold probably best to shoot for, especially for OzBargain types. Platinum good in certain circumstances.

          @travs:

I think you're downplaying lounge access a bit

Maybe, I was thoroughly introduced to the SYD First Lounge the first time I went. 5 hour delay on top of a 4 hour stop over… I was over it!

I'd probably really appreciate a oneworld First Lounge if I had a long stopover somewhere and I could take advantage of the beds for a nap. (Hong Kong, KL, Dubai, Doha etc). Even then it's the initial lounge access that's the key, so I fully agree that Gold is the best to attain. The Qantas international business lounges are excellent, First Lounges just add a few fancy things.

Also forgot to mention the platinum lounge access after a flight. Quite handy for a pre-meeting refresh or some grub if the plane food isn't great.

No real way to measure it, but I do think your calls to Qantas get picked up that much faster

The phones are definitely answered much faster for Platinum members. When I had to call as a lower level there were often big waits. All my calls as a Platinum have been answered within one ring.

Platinum One: Agree that the benefits look very marginal. Apparently more complimentary upgrades (I've never had one as a platiium) and a few extra unadvertised benefits like merchandise. Platinum for your partner looks OK for some I guess.

      • Qantas Club does not get you extra points on flights, preferred seating etc. And of course every status credit you ear counts towards lifetime status, as a lifetime Gold member I may be a little biased.

        • -4

I think they should rename Lifetime Silver and Gold to something like lifetime of 'reduced SC requirements to maintain silver and gold'. I actually thought that Lifetime Gold would mean what it said but it just means you only need to achieve 600SC per year instead of 700SC.

        • @danielh: oh really? I had thought lifetime Gold meant Gold status for the rest of your natural life as well…

        • -5

@majormick: Nope. I have Lifetime Silver and it just means I need to get a lot less SC to maintain silver each year. I still have to also do the minimum 4 QF flights as well.

        • +3

@danielh: I think you may be confused - it sounds like you've earned Silver in the last year, and as a bonus, Qantas reduce your 'target' to retain silver for the next year.

To clarify, lifetime Silver requires the accumulation of 7,000 status credits (or 350 SYD>MEL return flights on discount economy)

          From https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/flying/status-credits:

Status Credits earned every membership year contribute to Lifetime Status. As soon as the required number of Status Credits has been earned, Silver or Gold recognition is awarded for life. The program Awards, Rewards and Benefits may change from time to time.

        • @majormick: I hope you are right. I haven't hit anything below gold since I first joined 15 years ago so have not really tested this. I'll check with my bro-in-law as he recently hit LT gold.

  • +2

    worked for me, got confirmation

now need to find a status run from Brisbane

    • +1

Let us know if you find a good one. I need the same!

  • Does anyone know if gold and platinum benefits applies for Jetstar booked flights seeing as it's owned by Qantas.

    • -2

There are no benefits on Jetstar as such, low cost airline, same for tiger when it comes to Velocity.

      • +2

        Jetstar. Yes. And no.

        Yes
You can use the qantas lounges before (and after for platinum) the flight.

        No
You won't get shi*t in terms of leeway for excess baggage etc
        No benefits in-flight
        No priority boarding or checkin
        No priority baggage

        • Pity at a lot of places, the lounge is not open for the Jetstar flight, so you cannot use it, which is why I said no!

        • @markis10: Yep, gotta check that. I've also been turfed out of the Qantas lounge because the last Qantas flight had left!

  • I wonder if the cheap SYD-MEL-LST still exist. That's normally a 80SC run.

  • can you still earn these credits if you book with say bestjet, bestjet has no credot card fees unlike qantas

    • +1

Unlike hotel programs, airlines don't care where you book when it comes to points. Having said that you can avoid the credit card fees by buying a gift voucher first.

  • Thanks. I was literally filling out my travel paperwork for a UK trip when I read this!

  • +1

    Great find !!!

  • How do you find out if a flight is eligible?

    • +2

OK so if you use the calculator under "How many points could I earn?" it tells you. Thank you SO MUCH for this post OP! Upcoming business trip to Hong Kong with double status points pushes me to silver. Was looking at a random domestic trip for a weekend in order to make it happen but now don't need to!

    • From the bottom of the enroll page:
"Double Status Credits may not be earned on some fare types and booking classes including Classic Flight Rewards and any flight with a QF flight number on the ticket which is not operated by Qantas including Jetstar, Jetstar Asia, Valuair, Jetstar Japan, Jetstar Pacific and other partner airlines. For full terms and conditions, see Important information listed below."

  • +1

Damn I just book flights for 5 of us to LA on 12 April

  • +1

Great one OP! Does anyone know if Cathay Pacific bookings are eligible for this?

    • No, they typically wouldn't be. They need to have QF flight numbers and be operated by Qantas.

      • Ok, thanks :)

  • Any idea if it works on Emirates flights booked through qantas' website?

    • Not for Emirates flights.

An Eligible Flight for the purpose of this promotion means any Qantas operated flight with a QF flight number on the ticket where Status Credits are normally earned, or the following Qantas marketed flights with a QF flight number on the ticket: American Airlines operated flights on the following routes; Sydney to Los Angeles (QF309), Los Angeles to Sydney (QF310), Auckland to Los Angeles (QF3225) and Los Angeles to Auckland (QF3226). New flight bookings must be made between 12.01am (AEST) 28 Apr 2016 and 11.59pm (AEST) 4 May 2016, for travel between 28 Apr 2016 and 16 Apr 2017.

      • Damn!

  • +2

I have just passed this onto my work colleagues (we fly weekly) and I suspect that a lot of pre-booked fully flex flights are now being cancelled and re-booked right now.

I already cancelled my next 7 flights and are now starting to rebook them now. :-)

  • Is it just me or have all the prices for domestic flights gone up in recent months? Eg Syd - Melb you could easily get tickets for around $100, now the min seems to be $120 for red eye flights, and most are closer to $200. I don't get it - didn't Qantas say that demand had softened just in the last week?

Anyway, good deal if you can make use of it.

  • Dang it. I just cranked up 280 status credits….. If this had happened a couple of weeks ago I would have doubled that! Still, I have a few more flights planned that I haven't booked yet so this might mean I can hit Platinum this year which would be nice - not so much because of the extras (which frankly aren't that much) but more it means if I don't fly that much next year I'll just drop down to Gold so won't have to pay for club membership for two full years.

  • This is fantastic. Platinum here I come!!

  • Damn I just bought some Qantas plane tickets a few days ago, no way of getting double for that?

  • Do the tickets have to be booked via the Qantas site or the double status credits also apply to those booked via travel agency (as long as the QF number is used)??

    • Doesn't matter how you book it. As long as it is on QF metal, your FF number is attached to it and the booking is completed within the specified date range.

  • anyone know how long it takes for the double SCs to come through? I completed and ADL-DRW-ADL booking that was made during the eligibility period 3 days ago,and only the base SCs have come through as yet (I registered successfully as I received the email).

    • I got mine for flights on the 2 and 4 May so I'd say give it 5 working days.

      • Im still waiting. It has been a couple weeks.

        • Did you properly register and meet the status credit conditions? Sometimes people forget to provide their Qantas number at the start or think that flying an Emirates codeshare with Qantas will count (but it does not).

Can you share your flight details with us?

        • @danielh: Registered. Got the email to confirm. Booked within the dates, flew within the dates. QF flight bne cns bne. Was on my qf bookings online, qff numbers definitely provided.

          Should i be calling them?

        • @captobvious: I'd contact them online. Should hopefully be readily fixed for you. Have you flown other flights since?

        • @danielh: flown other qf flights but outside of the promo.
