What's with Steam trading cards?

I've noticed more people are sharing either relatively cheap or free steam games that comes with steam trading cards.

What is really the advantage/bargain for us as fellow ozb apart from being able to show that we played/have the game and be able to barter with fellow steam users?

Thanks guys!

  • Steam Trading Cards can be sold for money to use on Steam's store, good for purchasing more games.

Most cards sell from $0.03 to $0.20. Rarer cards, such as Foil, can sell for more than $0.50.

It's only worth it if you have a lot of cards to sell (and the time to list them on the market).

    • But why do people buy them? It seems like an attempt of a currency just for the sake of it. (Sorry, not having a go at you, I just also don't understand the concept).

Cards are used to obtain badges and wallpapers for your Steam profile, along with DLC and coupons.

The thing that drives the whole scheme is the completion-like behaviour - such as collecting coins or those Woolworths Animal/Disney/Dinosaur cards. People like the hunt of collecting a complete set as it's half the fun - the other half is owning the things you collect.

I think it's weird as a whole, but hey, free money!

You level up your profile apparently which lets you craft more stuff. I never got into it since it's a pay2win thing unless you have a heap of free time.

  • All about the steam profile badge level,

  • Was with steam from day one and now they introduced this and it's over my head…. I really don't have time for it but the you get bonuses/ freebies out of it.
