  • hp inks are terribly expensive though

    • well that was the idea.
HP made more money selling ink than printers

  • I bought the F2480 too, would have bought this one had it been available. Thanks though.

High capacity Black ink cartridge $47 @ officeworks

  • Can this be connected to a router via USB and function as a network printer?

  • Good price!
I bought the F2480 too, and 3 carts of ink at 50% off RRP.

  • I bought 2 of these a fortnight ago from HN with lowest price guarantee
They gave me a buck off =/ So it was $65. Shame they no longer have 110% guarantee as RRP was around $159

Unit released several years ago and many negative reviews online, but it works well for me.
I bought it only to use it as a Scanner with ADF.

  • can the ink carts be refilled with an ink kit?

  • Bought one to use as a scanner and fax. Bargain.

  • The real question you need to be asking is can ink cartridges (not refils) be purchased off of ebay for less than $2.50 each?? If not, don't bother.

I stick with Brother for printers for friends and family these days, because I can generally buy 20 cartridges delivered for around the $50 mark from ebay.

  • How long does each cartridge last?

    • While plenty of people have had no issues with it, quite a few user reviews have been very frustrated by the noise and paper jams (also at Newegg.)

      Testfreaks's synopsis is similarly schismatic:

Pros: large variety of function, quick to set up, low ink consumption, many great features, fast print time

Cons: quick function buttons, loud operation, memory card readers, ink guzzler, slow print time

I'm skipping this one — I understand that Officeworks are pretty relaxed about returns, though, so just make sure you run a stress-test on it straight away to flush out any defects.

      • LOL WTF?

      • +2

I agree. Read many reviews. Figured I could swallow the $65 and see for myself.
Don't expect too much from it and it should be fine.

Most negative comments I saw was about ink consumption. I was always under the impression that HP uses more ink than the competitors for output quality.

Others were on paper jams. This I had to find out for myself.

I'm using it to scan all my bills. As long as you use the paper guides properly the ADF works well.

I am annoyed how the bloatware <ahem> software does not allow automatic sorting for double sided pages though. But having found third party front-end I'm more or less happy. Sheesh how hard is it to tell the scanner to interleave the images when you turn the stack of paper the other way around after scanning the first side.

Oh… If anyone has a suggestion as to alternatives for scanning double sided pages I'd love to hear them.

I was impressed that a Win7 Cd was included considering the age of the printer (How long it's been out on the market). And I must admit that I love the OCR software included with the package.

All in all it was $65 well spent IMHO.
I think ADF Scanners start around $400, and ADF Printers / AIO's around $100+. I did a fair bit of googling and hunting at OW and HN to see if it was better to take advantage of the cashback that HP is offering and I ended up not able to justify the extra $100 for the "better"/"newer" product as I already had a colour duplex laser printer. I also found that this AIO has a reasonably small foot print compared to all the others which is another plus.

        • Nice mini review. I leave my printing to my separate colour laser printer. If I was buying this for printing then I would probably disappointed. But $66 for scanning and faxing only is a bargain imo.

        • "Oh… If anyone has a suggestion as to alternatives for scanning double sided pages I’d love to hear them."

The $200+ MX860 Canon multifunction from this earlier deal has ridiculously expensive ink, yet, I understand that it has automatic double-sided scanning — I almost got it just for that.

Reviews here speak highly of this feature. Issues were: ink expense, wireless/fax problems.

  • if you can refill the cartridges or buy compatibles, it's ok.

there's not much difference in the quality of cheap low-rang multi-functions
