Since Rapha took off these high end cycling kit shops are popping up all over the place. Between Rapha, SAS, Black Sheep, Jaggad, MAAP, Fyxo, Vulpine, Pedla and all of the countless others it seems there is serious competition for the MAMIL dollar selling $250 lycra cycling jerseys! Looks like nice kit, bit expensive but if you've splurged on a Colnago C60 and need something exclusive for the coffee shop on Beach Rd knock yourself out. What I would say from the experience my mountain of Lycra has taught me:

    1. I resisted the Rapha obsession for a couple of years scoffing at the crazy prices people paid for cycling shorts when they could get a set of dhb bib shorts off Wiggle for $50. About 8 months ago i relented and in a moment of madness bought a pair of Rapha Classic bib shorts. I am now a convert, along with tubeless tyres, best $200 investment i have made with cycling. I could live in Rapha bib shorts and if you are planning on doing around the bay or a longer ride of 6 or 7 hours, the extra $100 is money well spent to have an intact perineum at the end.

    2. I have learned to fear less the guy on a Colnago C60 or Pinarello Dogma in matched exclusive high end cycling kit and fear more the guy on a dodgy bike that looks like he pulled it off a hard rubbish collection on the way to the ride but with thighs like tree trunks and wearing either a sponsor's top or the club kit he has to wear to his 'A' Grade crit races. The former guy is normally either the last to the coffee shop or the bloke that says he isnt coming out for the hilly second loop after a coffee, making some kind of excuse about 'other commitments', the latter guy is the bloke that smashes it up the hills and drops us all 5kms out from the coffee shop up an 8% hill somewhere whilst my lungs are dragging on the road behind me! Normally the only bit of his cycling kit i see is the back of the jersey as it pulls away into the distance.

    • Not sure you should group fyxo in amongst the others, fyxo is local Melbourne small business.

      • Apologies to Fyxo, i've only ever looked at their website and on it they advertise 'Premium Cycling Attire'. I love some of their stuff though, almost tempted to build up an eBay chinese frame just to stick on their 'Fauxnago' decal set!! I've also just ordered their 'life is too short to ride shit bikes' Headset cap and bolt!

  • Looks nice, but since getting a merino cycling top I don't think I could go back to polyester / lycra easily.

The urban collection looks nice, but I question it's practicality for city cycling - the colours are too muted. Still, you'll look good while you're lying on the road.
Esily fixed with some overbright lights or a Monkeysee harness though - if you want to spend even more.
