If its only $20 more, for local and 4 more yrs warranty, youd have to be mad to buy this IMO.

    • Completely understand, however SE's price has increased, so the cheapest local price is around $205 + Post @ MWave, with most retailers around $215-$220.

Just giving people options and trying to be transparent :)

    • +4

I see NetPlus rep upvoted your comment, if they could put on a competitive price I'm sure they'd get some orders… ;)

    • Plus don't forget the wait time. 1 - 2 weeks PLUS shipping time from DS/Kogan. Potential wait of up to 3 weeks to save around $20? No thanks.

      • +1

Received mine today from the last Kogan sale - 12 days wait - in country Vic.

        • Thanks. So still looking at a 2 week wait. Much appreciated for the info.

False information, Samsung give a 5 Year warranty on 850 series drives internationally.

Better to read and make your own decision.

The one year is a warranty from Dick Smith, so instead of sending it back to Samsung, they handle it for the first year if you wish to do it that way.

Bottom line is that Shopping Express want nothing to do with any warranty claims once they sell it… now which place is better to buy from again?

      • +2

Yep 100% agree with the SE reference. I got a DOA N54L server from SE. They wanted me to deal with HP directly and not with them. It was delivered not working!

    • As someone who has had two SSD's die on me, I heartily agree.

  • Let's see if SE can beat this. My SSD just failed.. ;)

  • Whilst I understand all this discussion about warranty, is it necessary?

Can I not buy a SSD and expect it to last me the life of my PC?

    • You'd be stupid to think that.

Price diff is only $20, go local all the way!

      • +1

        Well his name is baka…

      • Local? Lol. Where's it made again? Where did it come from? Btw Kogan and hence dick Smith are Australian companies under our consumer laws. If youd like to pay extra to have it shipped from Hong Kong via Sydney instead of straight from Hong kong, then good luck to you….

        • Kogan has a Hong Kong arm which isn't Australian (and doesn't pay GST)

      • I've, shown the SI search, and I haven't found this, drive for $209 shipped. Care to link me (if you can)

    • +1

Hardrives are notoriously unreliable and everyone puts their absolute faith in one. All drives will eventually fail, just a matter of when. You'd be better off putting that $20 towards a backup drive. Even with a 5 year warranty if the drive fails, the data is gone and no crying or warranty is going to bring it back..

      • It seems everyone is not really understanding what I'm getting at. My question is, why is it that quality control is so poor that I have to purchase a drive and fear it'll fail within 5 years? Do they not make these things last?

        That's what I mean.

I have no issue supporting local.

        • +1

Paying the $20 is a waste to cover yourself for the unlikely event that the SSD fails in 5 years, I agree.

You do not save by by paying additional amounts in order to cover yourself for unlikely scenarios.

        • +4

You will most probably be fine. Samsung / Intel SSD's are extremely reliable. There is a lot of fear-mongers that have read a bunch of horror stories on the internet and regurgitate these stories. What is often missed by these regurgitaters is that they have sold tens of millions of units, and of course there is going to be problems over that sort of quantity - especially with a retail product that kids are going to use and abuse. As long as you don't physically drop it/take it underwater/x-ray it/disassemble it/polish it with solvents/short circuit it/switch it off when updating or those types of crazy things - you will be very very likely be fine.

I'd be happy to offer 10 to 1 to anyone on mine failing within 5 years

        • purchase a drive and fear it'll fail within 5 years? Do they not make these things last?

Nothing lasts forever. Many electronic devices only have 1 year warranty (and often fail a few months later … grrr). 5 years is a long time for modern electronics, given their small feature sizes. If manufacturers could make drives last longer without them costing a lot more to make, then they would.

Even the data you burn to "permanent storage media" like CD / DVD / BluRay (LOL, anyone else still use these ?) has a very limited life - depends on the brand, type of disk, etc but it is somewhere in the order of a few years to about 30-40 years or so IIRC. If you care about your data, buy quality disks - they are worth the extra cents.

I have in excess of 40 HDDs running 24/7 in my house, and another half a dozen SSDs.. Most of the drives are over 6 ears old.. No failures as yet. Drives do fail, but they're a lot more reliable than they were in the past.

        • +1

          @Praeto:

For those interested in some less subjective stats:
          SSD Long term Tests
          http://www.extremetech.com/computing/201064-which-ssds-are-t…

          BackBlaze HDD data center tests
          https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-reliability-q3-201…

Those tests are why I never buy Seagate, the infamous Barracuda Green had multiple drive failures within one year (as in the drive failed within a year, then the replacement drive also failed within the same year). Absolute rubbish, no QC at all.

    • Well, I'm still waiting for Samsung to send me a replacement for my drive that died 4 months ago….

  • +3

Spackbase I'm very surprised you posted this deal having said what you did when revivor posted it, but hey it's another deal posted and another step towards getting yourself an ozbargain reward :/

    • -3

That's not it at all, I've been very transparent with the comparison. Some people don't mind a saving by buying grey import (as was proven in that deal, and recent DS/Kogan deals), and this is a further saving.

Unless SE or someone else does a good price in the next 24hrs, the gap between grey and local is a lot bigger than when I commented on the other deal.

And for the record, I don't know if I've ever gotten a monthly award for my deal postings, it's all been for comps. (and badges mean nothing)

    • +6

Haha I just saw his comment in that post. We now have a new definition for hypocrite

    • +4

Oh well, at least I know that I'm trying to do my part as an honest ozbargainer!

    • +1

You do realise that he doesn't control the rewards right?

Also I'm struggling to thing when I saw your nick post any deals at all although here you are complaining that someone else's don't meet your irrelevant standards.

    • +1

The price difference when he made that comment was $8. It would be logical to pay only $8 more for local and 5 years warranty vs only 1 year.

However, the price difference between Kogan/DSE and Shopping Express is now $45.95.

Who would pay nearly $50 more? Exactly, no-one!

      • You keep answering your own questions.

      • +1

Its $16, MWave and MSY both have it at $205. Mwave has free delivery on it, or did yesterday, I havent looked today.

        • He mentioned SE so my comparison was with SE not the others.

The information in this post regarding warranty is wrong and yet more "grey import" fear mongering.

This product is a Samsung Authentic product and as such is covered by a SAMSUNG warranty which you can find information HERE

Any warranty offered by Dick Smith or Kogan for that matter is terms upon which THEY accept the warranty return to their premises, pretty much exactly the same as any other retailer.

READ PEOPLE: This product may contain warranty documents on or inside the packaging provided by the manufacturer of the product. Any such warranty documents are not given by Dick Smith, and are separate from the Dick Smith warranty.

    • +1

      B. Except where an International Product Warranty has been provided with your Samsung
product, warranty service will only be provided in the specific country where the
Samsung product was originally purchased. For example, if you have purchased the
Samsung product within Australia, warranty service will be limited to Australia only.

    • I just received my ssd from the previous Kogan deal and it had a warranty card inside stating it was 5 years.

  • Furthermore, WTF is a local model? Every single Samsung product comes with both international warranty terms, including my fridge.
Wait, does that mean my fridge is a grey import from Harvey Norman?

This is why you have more than one child, they can't all be winners.

    • One of your siblings must be the winner then. You go back to the store, and they deal with it. Like my sons Samsung phone. Optus was useless as was Samsung directly. Apparently when the flimsy tab covering the charge port broke off my sons phone, they claimed the fact it no longer charged was not their responsibility blaming entirely the lack of their flimsy flap. However Joyce Mayne who sold me the phone, had it repaired in a week. Of course I could pursue Samsung legally, but why should I have too?

Local warranty. Not always required, but great when it is. If you like to gamble why get a Samsung SSD? Save a few more bucks and buy a cheaper SSD in the first place. We all have lines we draw in the sand.

      • From all the reviews that I have read Sandisk have much better customer service for grey import with full international warranty.

Perfect. All the details about grey imports and stuff all detailed. Finally a SSD deal poster who isn't trying to pass of random crap as the best things on the market like alot of people do.

    • Too bad the details for the grey imports are wrong.

      • Yeah it looks that way :/ gets confusing

        • +1

Unless its changed since 2012, http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/article/418458/note_about_grey…

pc world, directly on Samsung and Kogan. No warranty outside of Kogan. Samsung does not recognise the original warranty, the entire warranty is Kogan backed.

Do note that Samsung isn't exactly wrong when it says "buyer beware" for those buying grey import models: the company will not honour local warranty for imported devices. Both MobiCity and Kogan offer their own 12 month warranties, but you should do your research on exactly what this includes before you decide to hit the trigger.

        • @Tuba: I believe the warranty is valid from the country it originally came from, so if its from HK potentially would need to be sent back thru to there and onto Samsung vs purchasing locally. Personally I wouldn't bother risking it for $20 but if the savings are greater then it may be worth the hassle in the unlikely event.

  • I ordered from the Kogan store (same company) over the weekend and now they are saying the estimated dispatch date is the 18th May :(

  • I purchased one of these on 27th april, kogan still haven't shipped it.They get my middle finger from both hands.Never buying ever again off theses turds no matter how good the deal.

  • According to MSY part sheet, they have this model for $205.

    http://cdn.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf

Will grab one this afternoon for the $16 difference + warranty.
