Nikon Coolpix P900 $597 (Plus Get $50 Back from AmEx) @ Harvey Norman

70

With an insane 83x optical zoom, and a powerful 16.1MP sensor, the Nikon Coolpix P900 Digital Camera is sure to do your memories justice, no matter how distant.

I have been keeping a look out for a special on this camera and believe that this is one of the best deals especially if we were to buy it using our AmEx card and get a further $50 back.

According to Harvey Norman, its a saving of $100. With the AmEx cash back, the camera will cost $547 ($597 - $50).

I bought mine online with local store pickup.

Enjoy.

  • Watch this video to get a feel for the 83x zoom

Great video. It shows both the insane zoom and the loss of image quality doing insane zoom. It's a tradeoff. If this is the sort of thing you want to do, it's a worthwhile item to have in your bag.

  • how does this compare to Sony A6000?

    • +1

cant really compare 2 cameras as different level of users targeted. Sony A6000 is mirrorless, interchangeable lens camera, for those people who want small, high quality pictures, get more features of a professional camera, different lenses (wide, tele, portrait, macro…) for different purposes. P900 is a super zoom, more like a all-in-one camera, as lens can't be changed, therefore, more convenient when travel.

      • The P900 has a tiny sensor to accomodate that incredible zoom and the zoom lens isn't the sharpest. The quality is a huge compromise. I compared a 50x zoom (Canon SX50HS) to a Nikon DSLR (D90) with a 70-300mm lens and external flash a few years ago. The DSLR was much better.

    • A6000 is a much better camera

But you have to buy the lenses. A decent 150mm zoom lens costs 300-700+

And that won't give you the zoom equivalent that you can get on the Nikon.

But if you really want to get into photography the Sony is much better. Or even if you just want a candid family shooter (kit lens is decent)

you can see ants on the moon with this camera.

This camera is just… staring at me…….

  • Also check out this vid for the zoom https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfshAzV0FN4

You can actually see the moon moving due to earth's rotation or moon orbiting or whatever. Too awesome.

  • I bought the Coolpix S9900 (with 30x optical zoom lens & 16MP) from Dick Smith when the they had the initial sales late last year for $150. I hardly ever used it so I don't know why I even bought it since I purchased the NikonD3300 DSLR about a month before that on a deal. Well, I know why. It was cheap, has a beautiful design and I am an OzBargainer so….. yeah.

  • I have the p900, excellent camera! Im not a professional photographaer obviously but it fits my needs just fine. You can get some really good shots with this thanks to the zoom

    • heres a couple of samples from my trip to bali last month, keep in mind im amateur as and this was on auto mode, and these pics have come from facebook as im at work so a lot of the quality has been lost thanks to there resizing

      • First one (of the lioness) is fantastic, at least at screen resolution. You can see some softness towards the back of the image at the right eye but the front eye is sharp. 2nd two are good but the blown highlights show one of the weaknesses of the superzooms - dynamic range sucks. Nonetheless nothing wrong with your skill. Well done and thanks for sharing.

  • Ordered one online. HN called up and said that it is on back order. No ETA. Something about earthquake in Japan impacting on delivery.

Sigh, no camera to play with yet. :(

  • Bought one in Cairns. It's a good average usage camera to accompany your "pro" camera of what I also own a D750. I tend to use the P900 as a binocular lol.

These are some of the photos I took with my P900 camera:
