Yep, I'd agree that these things are absolutely terrible. Not worth your time or money.

  • Boo kogan.

First time I've seen these Extenders on Dick.

That's because Dick is not really Dick any more it's Kogan in disguise of Dick.

  • Just spend the extra cash and get a branded unit.

Unbranded items in networking are generally terrible. It might work but you will regret not spending the extra 10 bucks to get something decent.

    • What would you recommend?

      • +1

        TP-Link WPA4220?

        • Do you use ethernet over power?

      • +1

Any branded item really. These no name brands have no reputation to uphold and they are impossible to update if there is something shitty with their firmware. Not to mention their goal is to makes the cheapest thing they can get away with.

However for something cheap TP link generally makes solid equipment.

Asus seem good bang for buck hardware but they have had some models with weak firmware which kept breaking.

At the end of the day you really need to look at particular models as there are literally 1000's of items and they constantly churn out new models so what was true 3 months ago might not be true now.

      • some of the TP Link extenders can be flashed with OpenWRT, making them even better alternatives.

you can grab the firmwares from https://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wa850re

of course, if you can help it, you should just buy a EOP adapter. Or you should buy a second, longer range router or Wifi AP such as a UniFi AP AC Lite, bridge it and expand your Wifi range.

If that doesn't work or if it's out of your budget, a repeater is a last ditch solution and should NOT be relied on to work for all purposes, mainly because they cut your available bandwidth in half. The more decent repeaters do have better speeds though but will cost you upwards of $60+

      This extender is Kogan branded.

      • Kogan doesn't make electronics.

This is just some cheap junk thrown together in a Chinese warehouse with a kogan sticker slapped on it.
        http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Wireless-N-Wifi-Repeater-802-…

Now think about it they have managed to slap all these parts together and selling it for under 10 AU to suppliers and making money on it. Theres just not enough money for it to be any good or have anyone spend some time making some decent firmware for it.

        • How is this any different to Dick Smith branded electronics?

      • Kogan branded just means the product has a Kogan logo on it.

Kogan Agora phones and tabs = made by BenQ and Micromax and possibly ZTE in the past
Kogan TV's = made by god knows who. Probably not even TCL
Kogan Atlas laptops = confirmed to be manufactured by Clevo

This has been a known fact in the electronics industry for a while now, certain products being sold under a particular brand, with parts made by multiple different manufacturers, this is no different to any other electronic product on the market today.

The only thing that separates well known manufacturers from Kogan is that they use quality parts, but to say that this product is unbranded is incorrect.

        • @tranqme:

So who makes the device then? Its not Kogan.

  • This has always been 29. Was looking for one and had been keeping an eye on them

Thanks a lot OzBargain… because of this I somehow ended up buying this for $28 from Harvey Norman.

Just bought this one from HN as well, cheers :)

  • Same item is cheaper on ebay without the Kogan rebranding. e.g. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AU-G-300Mbps-Wireless-N-802-11-Wi…

Is this actually a bad item or are people just hating on it because its kogan branded ??? looking at other popular brands there reviews are pretty bad as well eg.Drop outs and having to restart. im getting a very week signal upstairs in bedroom, would this do the job ??

    • These devices are the last resort of wifi. You would try plenty of other solutions before going to wifi extenders. People also tend to use them wrong as well not to mention how sensitive they are.

Now mix that with cheap junk parts and zero updates.

    • It's just people jumping on the Kogan is bad bandwagon.
You're taking a risk with this as you would be with other range extenders.

  • After reading the previous comments, I decided to buy and Just picked up my DLink extender 1320 and am now using it.
    What a shit product!!
I have my router upstairs, so I instaled the extender downstairs and my TV shows the upstairs wifi hotspot as Full 4 bars, while the DLink extender which is 4 metres from it only shows 2 bars!!
How crap and useless is this?!
Now sure this is the norm?
