      http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-Wireless-N-Wifi-Repeater…

      Usual price around $10 ~ 11 USD.

This is a re-brand of this cheap Chinese junk.

      • Nice find.

        • +6

you mean Kogan sell cheap rebranded Chinese goods?!

        • @mattlol:

          They also sell butter alternatives.

@scrimshaw: What about a margarine version?

      • Nice, even have the AU plug too!

    Is this any better than the TP-LINK 300mbps 2.4GHz Wi-Fi Extender TL-WA850RE?

    • I bought a 'WA850 at this price: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/229418
and it's been very successful for me.

I'd keep away from Kogan's nameless brand, unless someone can 'expose' who actually makes it and whether it can be upgraded over time.

    • +4

I'd choose TP-Link over Kogan branded crap anyday!~

      • +1

TP-link are giving the more renowned names a run for their money. They make great stuff.

  • I have one setup with EOP at the other end of my house. Works well.

Not really a bargain though, it is often this price.

  • +4

Don't buy these crap, I bought a proper one still doesn't do the job properly (TP LINK POE with WIFI)
    1. When too many devices connected=dropped out, slow, unstable speed and connection
    2. Anything with WIFI extended=half the speed. Basically, it will be super slow, forget about streaming anything over LAN.

My personal recommendation is buy a POE adapter and get a good known brand AP. Disable DHCP on it then use the AP to broadcast WIFI. You can use the same SSID and password, just change the channel further apart so no conflict and less interference.

    • -1

Anything with WIFI extended=half the speed

This doesn't have to be the case; some extenders choose a different channel than the base AP to reduce collisions.

      • My wifi extender (cheap one from an old ozb deal) has great wifi speeds. But it does interfere with the modems wifi signal

      • -1

I think you are missing the point, WIFI extender=repeater, which means when the signal get transfer to your device(s). It has to go through the extender, then the extender re-broadcast the signal, therefore, the speed will be approximately half the original transmitted speed.

        • +2

And my point is. I've done speed tests on both. And they came up the same

      • +1

This doesn't have to be the case; some extenders choose a different channel than the base AP to reduce collisions.

Totally missing the point. Apart from the relaying delay (slows the transmissions by HALF), the remote WiFi is still sharing a single connection.

Irrespective of the brand, this kind of product is a poor way to extend coverage, and it'd be pretty much un-usable for streaming, gaming, etc. Much better using Ethernet Over Power or even better to install a proper wired connection to an Access Point.

        • Totally missing the point. Apart from the relaying delay (slows the transmissions by HALF), the remote WiFi is still sharing a single connection.

          No, incorrect.
Yes, of course, relaying slows the overall end-to-end speed, but it does get the signal to the other end.
The RE does not slow the communications of other devices on the 'original' network, other than by now adding another device (now, retransmitting on a different channel).

        • @chrism238:

          No, incorrect.
          Yes, of course

          Hmmm, make up your mind.

relaying slows the overall end-to-end speed, but it does get the signal to the other end.

Yep, at less than half of the speed that was available at the point at which the repeater is located.

The RE does not slow the communications of other devices on the 'original' network, other than by now adding another device

No, of course not. Not sure who would think that it would, and I certainly didn't say anything like that.

However what I did say was that the REMOTE WiFi will share a single (and less than half-speed) connection to the main WiFi network. So the speed of a second or more devices connecting via the Access Point will be even more dramatically poor.

Try it… and you will understand.

        • @llama:

I do and am currently. I got some cheap zytec branded one from here. my kids play xbox online with it, and have no lag issues whats so ever….i've done download speed tests with the extender and with the actual modem and get the same speeds

Yep a second access point is definitely the best way on b/g/n as it gives you the most control. The link can just be a long decent quality wired LAN cable if you don't want the expense of PPoE and are either good at hiding wires or don't mind them visible. You do have to be careful to get the setup right - no loops between devices on the wired interface, only 1 DHCP server, and you want to be sure devices from both sides see each other. Choose from bands 1 6 and 11 and check out what other signals are invading your home from neighbour's wifi using a phone app to show what's around before you pick. I like this one:
      https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wi…

A good 3rd party firmware like Tomato or DDWRT also helps keep you in control. You do need to know a bit about network admin if you're going to have anything but the most basic home network.

Should you go with a good Wi-Fi extender like:

    https://www.pccasegear.com/products/34383/ubiquiti-unifi-ap-… (the 2.4/5Ghz version is $500!!!!!!!)

or a dual band super WiFi Router ?

    • This is the preferred and best option, but quite hard to setup!

  • Same device is cheaper on Ebay without the Kogan re-badging.

  • It works okay. But I wouldn't recommend it. Had trouble setting it up, but I found a solution online. Also, it doesn't seem to like phones. When I try to connect my Android it would kick it off while it's connecting. Here's an unboxing I did of it, if anyone's interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_xvIfOiJlo

  • Not sure if anyone is still reading this, but thought I'd share my experience. I got this using the $50 Kogan coupon from the health insurance deal a while back: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/216283. The delivery was delayed and took 2 weeks to arrive. The setup requires some extra tweaking to get it to work optimally. (E.g. for some reason, the wifi channel was set as 4 instead of "auto" by default. I had to change it to the same channel as my modem/router.) Right now it is working quite well, but overall I don't think it is worth the money and I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't have the coupon. There are better products out there. Also as people have posted above, there are identical products selling for cheaper, just without the Kogan brand.

    • Just opened the link again, the price has gone up to $45 so definitely not worth it.
