  • Is seniors card the same as a pensioners card?

    • AGL only allow one type of concession. Normally the pension concession is the best to use.

      • I asked that question and was told I will get both.

The Pensioner rebate is a supplement from the state government, whereas the discount is from the retailer.

        • I just went to my agl account and tried to apply another concession and it refused… only one allowed. Go to your account and see if it will let you add a second concession?

        • @xywolap: Just checked my account and it is showing the 21% discount, the $25 credit and still showing the pensioner concession.

        • @Elppa8: Interesting… I just checked again and under adding a concession it only allows Healthcare Concession or Pensioner Concession. I have the pensioner concession allocated there. Odd that it is counted as a concession when it is funded by the state govt?
It looks like I might have to change to another plan to get thee Seniors discount.
In doing that I now wonder if the seniors discount plan has higher rates?
Working these things out is a bit like chinese algebra.

No, Seniors cards are issued by the State Government, Pension cards by the Federal. Depending on your State there is also a pensioners rebate for power charges.

  • just changed to simply energy 3 hours ago. 38% for vic https://www.simplyenergy.com.au/home/victoria-energy-offer/

    • To bad they have changed the discount offer from applying on bill to usuage only.. 30% off the bill was significantly better turn 38%'off usuage for low-medium users.

Just a word of advice from someone who knows he isnt on the best plan ever (Origin).

    • Check for supply rates and meterage rates (every reseller is different and 30% off one may equal 26% off another)
    • Check the contract terms. Most are for 12 months then revert you back to full price unless you ring up and try to get another deal or threaten to move provider
    • Suggest you ring up one month before expiry to swap to their latest plan which will be half the discount of what you are receiving then threaten with leaving and you will get a similar discount offered as before

Origin is very upfront about your contract end date. They send you a letter a month before it ends to remind you. Plus it's always available on online account.

Origin's kWh rates are not too bad. Better than EA and AGL. From memory 18% from Origin would be better than this AGL's 21% offer. I'm currently getting 20% from Origin and constantly comparing all offers from all companies in a spreadsheet. Origin's rates with 20% off is the best offer in NSW at the moment (for my usage).

      • My issue is going through their renewal process. Twice now and I have never been offered the same rate was what I was previously on unless I started talking about other providers. I'd rather it just roll over. Its often swings and roundabouts … better kwh rates sometimes mean higher supply charges. Im based in Vic so may be slightly different but good to know I arent being entirely done over.

  • AGL have the worst rates in SA. For me anyway.

  • With the customer service you get from AGL, I won't sign up no matter how much discount they're giving. Just read the comments on their Facebook/Twitter page.

    • Read the ones from Energy Australia.. they are worse LOL.

  • Not the greatest discounts.
I have 40% off power and 20% off gas in VIC.

    • With which provider? and on what plan? (please)

% off is meaningless, depends what base rate is, also on usage or whole bill.

      • I agree. The utility providers rely on the lack of transparency in their various plans, and the fact that it takes a lot of work to compare one provider's deal with another's. Also, they dont publish all their offers. All this means that there is a lot of consumer inertia and they end up being able to charge their customers on a plan which is not optimal for the customer - simply because it's all too frickin' hard.
        Extremely frustrating!!
Nonetheless I am always interested in looking at the plans that people have selected as best for them - they might be best for me.

  • usual crap AGL website - contains no details of the rates for a 24 month 'Savers' plan.
until the kwh rates are known it is difficult to know if it is a deal or not.

FWIW, I got 26% discount with AGL last year (NSW elec).

      • But no mention of 2 year "Savers" plan, only 2 year "Fixed", which I can only assume is something else.

        • From the on line chat this what I was quoted:
"Offer only available for residential supply addresses in NSW where AGL operates, excluding ActewAGL areas. These plans have variable rates that AGL may vary at any time. This AGL SaversTM Electricity Plan lasts for 24 months and consists of a 21% Guaranteed Discount. This AGL SaversTM Gas Plan lasts for 24 months and consists of a 16% Guaranteed Discount. These discounts apply to our energy usage charges and do not apply to other charges such as supply or green charges."
I got them to quote each of the charges and they were the same as the current Saver Plan I am on now. (Endevour area)

        • @Elppa8:
Care to list the kWh rates?

  • Dup

  • It takes some homework sometimes. Simply energy in NSW is offering 23% discount and their peak rates look ok too, but their controlled load rates are 1.5 times AGL's and their daily service charge for controlled load 77.81cents against AGL's 5.335 cents - $65/quarter difference.

I'm calling bullshit on this one. Most energy companies give these kinds of "discounts". The only way to buy is to compare cents per kw/h that you will be charged. You'd be surprised at how reticent these companies are to supply that info, and when they do, the extent to which they try to confuse it. One idiot actually told me that they only supply the rates once you've signed up. And while we're at it, 33% off what? A price no one pays? These energy companies have the morals of a (insert your despised group here).

    • They definitely need to be made to clearly and openly display their rates. They do make an effort to confuse and hide it as much as they can.
