I did a 3d/2n and I agree with the travel time. Don't forget to hide your booze in your bag!

Agree 100%. The in and out days are mostly taken up with that longass transit from Hanoi. Do the 3 days.
If you're short on time the 2D1N is fine, we got there about lunch time and left the next day around 3ish. There's only so much you can do on a small boat. I didn't feel we missed out on anything and the people that were already on the boat when we got there (people doing the 2 nights) said they wished they just did 1 day as the 2nd day is just a repeat of the 1st day so they just sat on the boat. So if you don't have extra time 1 night is good enough.
If anyone also needs a hotel when in Hanoi I can highly recommend these guys who do a package which includes this same cruise.

I took the same package a couple of weeks ago and had a great time .I also stayed at the same hotel 12 month prior but didn't do the Halong Bay cruise .
2 day 1 night cruises on Ha Long Bay are not worth the money - you spend most of the morning (around 4 hours) driving there, and half the next day driving back, so are on the boat for less than 24 hours. Much better doing 3 day 2 night cruises as you get a little more down time.
