Pyrex of today isn't the same if Pyrex of yesterday.

    • +4

No it isn't. But still a pretty good product. Except for the lids.

      • +4

Pyrex switched from using borosilicate glass to tempered soda lime glass only after Corning sold the brand to World Kitchen in 1998.

Still good but not as great as it used to be.

        • +1

In Australia (and Europe) there is still the Pyrex Classic range which uses borosilicate glass (and has a much longer warranty) but it is only available for some items.

one way of prolonging the life of those lids is to ensure they dont get nuked in the microwave/dishwasher. despite being labelled as dishwasher and microwave safe, they still last longest when washed by hand.

        • Yes, I stopped nuking them with lids when my first one went misshapen. Still put my lids in the dishwasher without a problem but may stop.

      • +4

Yeah I bought up when this same/similar deal was on ozbargain last year.

I was a Pyrex n00b. Loved the glass, but I didn't know about the disintegrating lids :(. Most of my lids are now gone.

I'm thinking about replacing with the IKEA FÖRTROLIGs instead http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/70233789/ .

        • +3

I've been using the Ikea ones and they are pretty decent

        • +4

write to pyrex to let them know, afterall, they wouldnt know if no one told them. last time they sent me a few lids to replace the faulty ones.

        • @t25: That's impressive of Pyrex to do! I would have thought they'd just tell me to buy whole new sets.
Did they ask you for the receipt? I'll send them an email anyhow, worth a shot. Thanks

        • +3

@Uncharted: just a standard email about how i was dissapointed about their quality of lids, and how i thought that considering that their glassware wasnt crap, i would expect their lids to be of a certain quality to match their glassware.

        • +7

          @t25:
I expect Pyrex customer service to receive 1000+ emails this week about people complaining about poor quality lids!

        • I have the IKEA ones and they're great. No issues. You can't really go wrong at that price.

        • @t25: I sent them a message over facebook. Reply I got back was:
"Australia did range the replacement lids however, there were only limited requests for additional lids which is why we made the decision to stop offering the lids in the Australian market." & "unfortunately there are no lids for purchase from us. Regards, The Pyrex Team."

Shame. I find it a bit hard to believe not many people bought the replacement lids when they were sold.

        • @Uncharted: id be tempted to use this page instead.

take your pick between a phone call, or nicely worded email/letter.

because selling such great glassware with lids that barely make it past the one year mark.

    • I see the physical differences written… but I've never known feature differences. Should I be concerned?

    • +1

Most Pyrex today is made of cheaper soda lime glass, as opposed to borosilicate glass.

These pictures will tell you more about the origin of Pyrex.

To buy the better kind of Pyrex, look for PYREX all in caps. But even then, it is not guaranteed. I've got vintage Pyrex from my mom made in the 70s, still look as good as new.

  • Love deals… but I think I've already got 1 of everything. Really don't know what-more I could do with it. Metal baking trays, on the other hand…!

a true ozbargainer never just has one of any bargain 😄

Can you imagine only having a single eneloop?

At $11.99 price range you cant beat the Decor thermoglass baking dish

    • I own one or more of just about every size of glass container from both pyrex & Decor (both Decor thermoglass and the newer Decor match-ups glass containers). I tend to prefer the Decor glass containers, even though they're made in China.

Decor's glass containers are made from borosilicate glass. They have a small extended rim around the edge which makes them a bit easier to handle, but not so big that it takes up too much extra fridge space. And the decor realseal lids have a nice silicone seal and clickable air vent system, which I think gives a much better airtight seal than the normal pyrex lids.

On the other hand if you're drop prone the softer pyrex lids (and possibly the usa made pyrex soda-lime glass) are more likely to survive intact.

I love the large 3.0 litre Decor thermoglass containers, those along with the large 2.6 litre pyrex containers get the most use around here.

      • Yep same here, we bake and store foods in it. They are very handy to have around the house. I even boil water in it some time ( yes, it survive the open flame of the gas stove which is at least 2,045 °C, just dont expose it to thermal shock ). 1 of my Decor container is over 5yrs now, money well spent I say.

Remember that if the Pyrex logo is in all capitals that is made in Europe or Australia with the original borosilicate glass. If the logo is in lower case than that is American made and uses the lower quality soda lime glass.
Coles seems to sell both types.

Wow how the heck you know this? It amazes me what some of the ozbarginers here know about these products….

Almost like you work for them…

      • +1

There are actually two companies today that have the rights to sell Pyrex branded glassware.
