  • Man you're quick, that just came up… Either way I can see a use for one of these. Purchased.

    • Thanks i would get one except i still have the Auspost one

  • I've been looking for a cheap one of these :)

  • Perfect a Must for overseas travelers!

    • +2

      What do you weigh……

Then what to you weigh when you are holding the bag?

      there saved you all money!

      • Only if you have a proper scale (is there a special name for the ones people weigh themselves on?) handy, and most hotels don't.

  • I'd buy one, but if I can't lift my backpack, it's too heavy. :) Generally I come in under 14kg and can even reach 10kg if I try hard. So it's superfluous for me. But I can see that it would be useful for people with several suitcases, and the price is nice. Now all you need is a calculator from Ozstock to total the weights. :)

    • Are you saying you can't lift 10kg?
Need to hit the gym then

      • +1

When you are walking the streets of a foreign city on a hot day or a cold day, you will appreciate every kg you didn't put into your backpack. lol!

  • Fantastic, travelling interstate with Jetstar lite soon……….just what I needed!

    Great deal:
    - Any idea how much the actual thing weighs? ie. there is little point in buying this if the thing itself weighs 5kgs.
    - How accurate are these things when compared to the weighing machine at the airport.
    - I am assuming this is fairly easy to use.

    • Hahha I would guess it would something like 100g. Give it +/- 10% if you are worried about the different accuracies, but if you are spot on with this thing then even if you end up being 5-10% over at the airport they very rarely charge (except Jetstar who will demand you hand over the deed to your house)

  • I use a digital one from dealextreme. Cost a little more ($10) but is digital, light weight and fits in the front pocket of my suitcase easily.

    • I checked the dealextreme one http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.35716
It looks good although the hook and the handle looks stronger on the ozstock one, I guess with these things you can't be sure until you use them. Still a positive vote from me.

  • I am giving this offer a positive because I bought one of these before and it's really handy. And I bought it for much more than what is currently offered! The unit itself is about 180g (with the box). When you get it, you know why you will need the box.

The negative about this unit (like all these spring scales) is that they don't measure accurately when you are near the limit (eg. 20Kg could be 19Kg or 21Kg). The digital units are very good but costly. But for the price and if you are a traveller on low-cost carriers, it's a good buy as you can pack it with you.

  • purchased one . thank

  • Nice but I prefer the digital scales. What's the accuracy on this one?

  • Sorry to sound like a dunce, but how do these things work? Do you have to hand them from something?

    • +1

You hook it onto the handle of the baggage and then lift the top of the scale.

      • OK, so it's measuring how much resistance the bag puts up when you pull, is it?

        • +1

No, you have to lift the bag off the ground. The spring inside the gizmo stretches and how much it does is a measure of the weight of the bag. Same principle as those hanging spring scales you will see in markets.

          • @retiredfeline: Ah k, think I get it. Does it get awkward when weighing bulky bags?

            • +1

@tomsco: Of course. You may have to stand on the bed or something like that and hope that hotel doesn't learn about it. ;)

              • +1

@retiredfeline: Yeah, as greenpossum said, can get awkward when you're trying to weigh bulky items, such as a big suitcase. Note it's not an issue with this scale only, it's with every scale like these (hanging ones).

As a tip, if the item is too heavy for you to lift using your hands, try putting a stick through the handle of the scale. This distributes the weight of the item over a larger surface :-)

  • brilliant!!

I would have got one of these if australia post delivered.

I have an even better deal…

Pick up your bag, stand on your bathroom scales, deduct your weight … and now you know the weight of your bag.

    Price: free!

    • Assuming you have bathroom scales.

    • Genius!!! ;-)

      • +1

Genius is a word thrown around lightly these days

    • Very clever. Pos'ed you. But I suppose some people will want to take this gizmo on their travels to make sure their loot doesn't exceed the baggage allowance.

Digital vs. dial is no guarantee of accuracy. They both use use a spring to measure weight, and the accuracy is dependent on the quality of the spring itself - this is what you are paying for. Plus the quality of the spring will probably degrade over time and use.

  • Digital luggage scales (I am referring to the Balanzza) is very different
from the simple scale using springs. Digital luggage scales do not use a spring. They use sophisticated electronics to measure the variance in the different weights applied to the scale. They are also much more expensive and measures more accurately. I am not a shareholder, dealer or in anyway associated with this brand or company. Buy them when there is a special.

  • how about if you can easily lift the bag with one hand, then its under 20kg?

this is an alright deal, but I don't think its an essential for travel, definitely not a must have as described in the opening post.

    • Matter of opinon. If it saves you from getting charged for being overweight even once it's been worth it. Personally I'm almost always right on the limit (on the return trip - souvineers, new clothes etc..) so I use mine heaps. Going to buy one of these to replace it because, as some have mentioned, you expect some loss in accuracy over time as the spring stretches slightly.
Personally I wouldn't go digital unless it's cheap and you don't mind having to throw it out or lose it.

I think DealsExtreme has a much better option and bargain. thttp://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.35716
    Price: $8.91 free delivery.
    The reasons why it's better:
    - it's digital
    - it has Double precision: 0~10kg: 5g, 10~45kg: 10g - (which means accuracy 5 or 10 g)
    - small size
    - small weight
    - can weigh things up to 45 kg

I've used the spring ones before and they are not accurate. The difference can be up to 2 kg. They are a bit bulky and not convenient to travel with.

    • totally agreed

    • Actually that does sound a lot better than the spring based ones!

    • bought one :)
might as well pay an extra $2 for something more accurate and smaller & its digital
