I honestly think if you're paying more than ~$30 for these… you f*** up.

    • Just not that good? Or are better prices frequently available?

        Not that good.

At this price I'd stick with some xiaomi pistons. In ear might not be your thing, though.

portapro kill any earbud for sound, earbuds only win for isolation and portability.

        • @TRANCE:

Heavily disagree, though there is a chance that the one's I got aren't legitimate (fakes are everywhere).

The Porta Pros I have sound like mud. Loud mud, granted, but mud none-the-less.

          Piston Hypbrids 4eva!

        • Well they are probably fake, portapro sound nothing like mud, they are very engaging, toe tapping and head banging will be rampant, I also own several expensive earbuds, but I prefer the open airy sound of the portapro's, earbuds sound too closed in.

        • @Droz: Sounds like a fake (I bought a fake one deliberately once to use the headband for modding KSC-75). The sound was so horrible that I threw the fake units out straight away.

      • oh they are great on ears, especially for the budget range. But I bought mine from Amazon years ago for about $35

  • Great headphone for commuting, own a pair myself. Price is alright too.

I can't remember how much I paid for mine many years ago but I could have sworn it was much cheaper than they're selling for now. Have these gone up in price? Alternatively you can just get the Koss KSC75 which have the same drivers.

    • I am sure KSC75 has slightly different driver. That said, the drivers are compatiable (as in, you can remove the driver unit from the headband and replace it with KSC75's driver unit).

Also, I think the price is from Australian dollar being crap as well. I kinda remember paying $37 AUD from Amazon, which even at same USD price would be around $44 AUD because of the exchange rate.

      • I prefer the ksc75 driver, it is titanium coated, while portapro is bare, it results in portapro being more bassy and the ksc75 being more tight and bright. I put the ksc75 units on my portapro headband.

        • Yeah, ditto. Also, it's cheaper to just replace the headphone units with KSC75 instead of getting the entire headphone. I have two like that in my household (one for my gf, which originally was mine and another one that I am currently using).

I have a number of headphones and earphones, it's rare for me to replace the headphone with the same headphone (I kinda like trying new things out). KSC-75 units with the portapro headband are one of them.

  • They've been as low as ~$30 delivered https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/86438

But for right now, it's a pretty good price.

These were the bee's knees back in the 80's when the walkman revolution hit, every serious audiophile had these folding pocket busters. But they really are that old and unchanged, be aware also that they speakers are open backed and have no noise insulation so you're gonna be sharing whatever you listen to with your immediate neighbours. Cool retro fun, classic ground breaking design, but its a betamax in a VHS world.

    • HD600 is still liked by many people and that is 20 years old model, so is ER4. Headphone industry has been improving, that said, what sounded good still sounds good. There are handful of old headphone models that are still produced, sold and recommended, PortaPro is one of them.

Open design headphones have their advantages, which is why we still have them around. I personally own one for going for a stroll to the park and for times when I stay at some place else for a long time (since I cannot take what I own without it taking up so much space in my bag).

Yeh these do sound good but they are definitely dated and that headband is seriously a pain in the arse.
If looking retro-cool is your thing then go for it otherwise get yourself some Xiaomi Piston in-ears, you will be doing yourself a favour.
