My House Was Broken into, Could You Please Recommend Home Security System That Could Provide a Clear Footage for The Police?

Please help.

Someone broken into our house and it is not the first time. I believe I know the person and this person is on drug…

The police said they need a clear footage so that they can take him to the court.

Get the HIKVisions. Pretty good and really nice price. Get the dome ones. http://overseas.hikvision.com/europe/products.aspx?c_kind=1&…
They are IPCameras, so they can let you monitor feed via mobile.
Get them from this store: http://stores.ebay.com.au/dstd-store/_i.html?_nkw=&submit=Se…

    • Thanks very much for your help.

Do they sell as a whole set?

Not sure what do I need to built a system except the camera please? Do I need a PoE Switch or a NVR or they are cloud based? Do I have to have a monitor as I only need to watch on my phone.

Do I need the Network camera in order to watch my son's bedroom on my phone?

How good the cameras need to be for the footage for police? Will 1080 do the job or 3MP?

      • +5

You will need a POE switch. How many ports depend on how many cameras you are installing + 1 extra port to connect it to your router. Here's one from MSY. 8 Port Gigabit with 8 Port PoE D-Link DGS-1210-10P (Max 97w) $259. You can install 7 IP cameras on that switch. You don't need any monitor. You can view from your computer or phone once configured. I have a NVR which does recording and daily cloud uploads for the feed.

You need ethernet cables feeding from each ip camera installation point back to where you have your POE switch installed. (I have my POE switch right next my router). Connect each IP camera to POE switch via ethernet. Connect POE switch to router (make sure you have an ethernet port on your router free for this). Download the
software in your computer from HIKVision to setup and configure each camera and done.

Some more technical info here: http://overseas.hikvision.com//uploadfile/image/201507081057…

Go for 4MP and with IR. Make sure they say external (ip66) If you want them installed outside.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Hikvision-DS-2CD2432F-IW-3MP-Wire… Are good for internal security cameras, and can connect over Wifi.

        • If I only get the POE switch not the NVR, how will it record and upload to the cloud?

Do you think I need both of the PoE Switch and NVR to do the job please?

        • Could you please recommend one for outdoor?

How do you think about http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Hikvision-DS-2CD3145F-I-4MP-IP66-… please?

        • +1

@jiaqi518:if you get an nvr get one which has built in PoE. This saves you from having to buy a separate PoE switch.

        • @teardrops21:

Do you think I can get cheaper 3mp/4mp cameras that does not have the wifi since Dad will stall the cable for me anyway?

Which one will you recommend please?

        • +1

          @jiaqi518:
          that's around $121 AUD.
          Get this one instead:
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Hikvision-DS-2CD3345-I-4MP-EXIR-T…
It's the Chinese version, which was modded for EN version. So you can't update the camera firmware.

If you want an international model then:
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Hikvision-DS-2CD3145F-I-4MP-IP66-…

These are the cheapest good quality ip camera you can get. Try searching any AU store, you will be surprised by the prices :)

        • @jiaqi518:I'm in the same boat as you. I'm looking for some internal cameras. Looking at hikvision however I cannot decide which one. I'm also looking for an NVR as I will need to record and store video for a length of time. I am here to pick up some suggestions too.

        • @shadowarrior:

It seems that outdoor4mp is cheaper than indoor 3mp:

          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/121524873341

Could I install outdoor camera indoor then?

        • @jiaqi518: You sure can. People install these inside their shops/warehouse/garage. But remember, you want the camera to also work as a deterrent. If someone sees a camera outside your house, they might not want to enter in the first place. Better option than just having something to capture once they are already inside.

        • @shadowarrior: Hi Shadowarrior,
Thanks for all the useful tips and experience you shared.

Just a very simple question on the HIKVISION cameras if you don't mind, the difference between a bullet camera vs dome camera? Thanks.

        • +1

          @sol3x:
          Domes:
          - better aesthetics
          - covert
          - often vandal proof
          - outsider can't figure out it's FOV
          - easier to conceal wiring.

          Bullets:
          - easier to mount and adjust.
          - most of the time have wider angle lens.
          - often cheaper

        • @shadowarrior: great stuff. Thanks shadowarriors :)
I'm leaning towards the synology solution mentioned by RobMel below. Your thought?

    • I'm curious - how come you're recommending the op a dome camera? I thought for the indoor cameras it is recommended to get the non-dome ones that can be hidden inconspicuously, like on the book shelf or on the mantel. Rather than on the ceiling where it is obvious to the theft?

      • +6

OP wants A camera which ticks all the boxes and is within a price bracket. And my first assumption was that OP wanted an external camera (works as a good deterrent than just recording once an intruder is already inside).

Hidden from plain view goes good when you know people are going to come inside, and one of them is going to be sly and nick something. You want to secretly record the activity. In case of home intruders, I think the prime objective should be deterrent. Put cameras which stand out all around the house. Have good sensor security lights. Deter them as much as you can from entering your property in the first place.

If someone is hellbent in entering your property, doesn't matter what type of camera you chose, 90% of the time they are going to turn off mains, remove a window frame and come inside. Hidden or visible in plain sight won't do anything there.

        • Very fair points. Though op did mention he wants something in his son's bedroom. Maybe he needs both exterior & interior.

        • +2

Just on a side note. If the whole turning off mains thing became a possibility you could setup your NVR that has POE with a UPS. It might only last 15mins but that's probably all it needs. LOL just realised other people have already suggested this.

        • @voolish:
Could u pls suggest one with UPS?

    • +1

Get the turret ipcams intead of the domes. The IR is good and it lessens the need to clean cobwebs blocking your view.

Get a NVR at the same time which will double up as a POE switch (not much more) to store all footage.

  • +11

I'd also recommend getting an UPS system. A lot of burglars these days just turn off the power at your meter box when they see a security camera.

    • Dont the smart meter boxes contain a camera in there? They take footage when rhe box is open. Its the 2 little eyss. One is an light sensor the other a ccd

      • Dont the smart meter boxes contain a camera in there?

        None that I've ever seen.

      • +4

It only takes a photo if you're not wearing a tin foil hat.

        • How does it know if you are wearing a hat?

      • My box is completely locked up and requires a special key. The smart meter is monitored remotely by Ausgrid.

        • +1

Well that's a little silly. How are you meant to turn your power off in an emergency or even when you get into the roof like all the ads tell you to?

        • @Trozza:

We have switches in the house.
IT's not silly. I had an electrical engineer design the system in our house

        • @cDNA:

Interesting. Learn something new every day ay.

        • @Trozza:

If you're interested, a company similar to this one did all the work.

          http://www.smarthomes.com.au/index.php

        • @cDNA:
Did you go full home automation or just had someone who knew what they were doing design the electrical system?

        • @Trozza:

My home isn't fully automated. My lights can be operated using a remote and I can adjust the hot water temperature using a remote. The temperature of the house is also monitored and can communicate with our ducted reverse cycle air conditioner. The rooms don't have door handles and can be opened and closed using a switch or remote.
I knew someone who works in the electrical engineering space. We got Ausgrid to inspect our house just to be safe.

        • My box is completely locked up

  • +11

Great idea to have some sort of home security device for peace of mind and potentially to catch the criminal.
Security camera captured the thief in action which led to her arrest (long story). She was charged and case went to court.

Judge gave her 12 months good behaviour bond and a 3 months suspended sentence. Court didn't recover anything from her or ordered her to payback, sadly lost over 15k worth (replacement value) of stuff.

When I asked police what about my stuff, response was that’s how the legal system works and I should consider insurance.

If you are worried about theft of valuable items consider getting contents insurance.

    • +5

That's the unfortunate truth of these things. Even if police catch the culprit nothing happens to them, and there is no way you will get anything back or compensation. However, cameras can act as a deterrent so potential robbers would pick another target instead.

      • Yep cctv systems i believe are good deterents

        • A guy at work showed me some of footage from his cams. The thieves came when it was dark and the cameras clarity was poor. They were wearing hoodies and/or baseball caps over their heads. Since cameras are generally mounted up high there wasn't much to see of their faces. At one point they went under the camera with the best view and it was then turned to face the wall.

As cameras are becoming cheaper and more common, they are becoming a fact of life for thieves to deal with and less of a deterrent.

    • +13

I have got content insurance however more about about my three year old's safety

    • Yeah fricken sucks. The only reason I'd report something these days is so that the insurance company is happy. The amount of effort is too much for the lack of justice.

    • +2

Cheers for sharing your experience. I had no idea the about the bit on recovery of stolen items

    • +4

thats good advice; but one of my friend's house were robbed ,police captured thief (thanks to cctv again !) but couldn't recover everything, luckily he had home and contents insurance - but that luck ran out when they asked for a receipt for each and every item he was claiming are stolen, he showed cctv footage but they decline claim , so make sure you save all your receipt somewhere or atleast take a photo on your mobile - (i find this is the best way to keep receipt for long time, as nowadays all photos are auto uploded to dropbox/google drive)

      • I believe claim process is different with each of the insurance providers.
I am currently with NRMA and they will honour claim without receipts if you had pictures of the items instead. In either case they wont replace the item but they will provide the residual value of them unless they are a year or two old. E.g. If you had your DVD collection of 100 DVD stolen they may only pay $500 for the whole lot.

      • who was the insurance company? (I don't mind paying more for insurance if they actually pay in the event of a claim :) )

  • +2

    Drones everywhere

    • Drone patrol!

  • Do you know how the thief got into your house?

    • Not sure :(

      • +6

If I were in your position, I'd be changing all of my door locks immediately (if not already, to deadlocks) & also making sure I had good keyed window locks as well.

If there's no obvious point of ingress (damaged window/door, jimmied lock etc), that's very concerning…most junkies & dreggers can't pick locks, so they usually brute-force their way in somehow…not knowing how they got in is a critical issue! Have they somehow stolen/obtained a key from a previous owner/tenant? :/

  • +2

You know the person but you don't know how they get in. What do you think of that, Watson?

    • +2

      Shut up Sherlock

  • +2

Got a Synology NAS for that.
Synology NAS, comes with license for 2 IP cameras connected to their surveillance App
2 * 1080P IP cameras (tons compatible around)
    UPS
I get an immediate email and can review the clip on my mobile.

Use the NAS also as back for my machines, personal cloud, media servers (movies, pics, music), download server.
Haven't tried it as a coffee machine, but it works great for everything else.

    • Is the quality good enough for the police?

      • Quality is as good as the IP cam you buy for it.
        Works with thousands of models.
get a decent 1080P camera and a good hard disk that can handle 24/7 and you are set.

        • Hi RobMel,

          Interested in your Synology solution.
How do you power your IP cameras though? How would you make the HIKVISION dome camera mentioned here talking with Synology?
And what if I intend to connect more than 2 cameras?
          Thanks.

        • Also does it need internet connection to keep the cameras operating?

        • @sol3x:

          Hi,
Power is via normal power adaptor into my UPS, same as NAS and Router.
Cameras connect via you LAN, wired or wireless.
Must be a supported camera. Do a search on synology regarding supported cameras.
For more than 2 cameras you buy an additional license pack.
Just do a search and you will find those.

          Cheers

        • @sol3x:

Only LAN is needed to camera to connect to NAS and record events.
To get instant email alert you do need internet of course.

          Cheers

Good luck with that attitude when you stand in front of a judge charged with manslaughter

Oh look, a leftist has crawled out of the woodwork.

Good luck trying to prosecute someone for acting in self-defense.

        • +9

Self defense takes into account this thing called reasonable force. Gun vs unarmed intruder is not reasonable

          @tassieeagle:

"You can use force to defend yourself, however the force must be equal or less than the force being used by the intruder."

I'm aware of the law, and personally, I do not care.

I petition my local MP to relax gun laws in Australia, but not to the extent of being able to own assault rifles, large gauge shotguns, explosives etc..

          @tassieeagle:

Gun vs unarmed intruder is not reasonable

I dunno, it sounds fair to me! :P

        • @cDNA:
How do you want to relax them? You can already own a handgun at home with proper licencing and a gun safe.

        • +1

          @cDNA:

you may not care, but perhaps if you had children, it would be to their detriment if you went to jail?

        • @tassieeagle: ? but guy with gun is not intruding. Why is intruder in other's property at first place. Can have a knife to hjarm as well.

        • @cDNA: this is NOT america mate. You're in Australia, f**k the gun law. The root of crimes and violence are guns.

        • +5

@cDNA: I haven't been keeping up with the recent Newcastle home invader death, but frankly I hope the homeowner gets off…if a convicted sex offender broke into my home with my kids present, I'd have done exactly the same thing.

        • +3

          @StewBalls:

Reports i read was he chased him down the street.
Once the guy ran off, you're no longer in imminent danger.
Kind of changes the equation a little…

Anyway, he's on a murder charge, but on bail, last i heard - let's see what happens.

Stereotypes have always worked for me.
Now get back in that box i made for you.

    • Yeah & in the process get shot or family members

  • i'm not sure what your set up is regarding security, have you considered improving on that before investing on surveillance. this may sound a little cynical, but it may require nothing more than making it harder to break into your home relative to neighbouring homes. i.e. all things equal, if your home is fortified, a criminal is likely to go elsewhere.

here are some possible alternative ghetto solutions:
    - get an old mobile phone which when camera detects changes, will trigger a call.
    - alternatively, perhaps rig up webcam => e-mail => sms.

  • +1

If you know who it is and they are a druggie, why not put an anonymous tip into the police about that?

  • this is pretty good, no need power point, just plug it in (sPoE) and it comes with built in PoE NVR. very easy to setup

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CCTV-ZMODO-4-Channel-Complete-sPo…

  • If I was you I'd spend any money I had for security on keeping them out. Having a movie quality video of them stalking about my house would give me very little comfort.

  • -4

Unfortunately the incident was in the past. There are no systems available that can provide footage.

  • Most power companies offer a padlock for your meter box. I bought one last year. The company's meter readers have a master key and you are supplied with at least one key. I ordered 2 keys. Cost about $75, but no ongoing fees.
You just have to remember to unlock it if you have an electrician doing work on your place as they obviously won't have access to the meter box otherwise.

  • We used http://www.ctccommunications.com.au/ to install alarm system for my house.

They installed a Bosch pet-friendly alarm system, and it SMS you if there's any system event (alarm, change date, etc). It's a one-off payment with no ongoing costs.

We've set it up such that we can partially arm the alarm (i.e. bedrooms unarmed, everything else armed).

They can also provide you with a good surveillance product that you can use. Give them a ring, they are really nice and friendly.

  • First off how do people keep getting in? Maybe that is something you need to address as well? I.e Swann has things like window alarms that you can arm at night, they have driveway sensors that you could put on your drive or near your front door that would make a noise when someone walks past which could deter thieves.

Installing a couple of something like this and arming them every night could be a good start

  • If they wear a balaclava, no camera is going to identify them.

  • Please Recommend Home Security System

    Smith and Wesson.

    • I prefer a Winchester

      • Well now, seeing as how the .44 Magnum is the most powerful handgun ever made, you have to ask yourself one question - am I feeling lucky?

(Actually I always prefered the .357 Magnum. Very accurate, instant man stopper, and more manageable recoil.)
