Mysterious Outstanding Bill Notification From Panthera Finance

So, this morning a mail has come to me from Panthera Finance asking me to pay $570 on to them for Energy Australia.

As far as I remember, I haven't used Energy Australia since 2014, and I've moved places several times since then. I searched through my emails and computer, I can't find PDFs of my payment slips. However, I do have a spreadsheet that shows me that I last paid Energy Australia $250 in June 2014.

Is this debt collection real? Or just a scam? Or is someone using my name under my old apartment? I was renting the apartment back then and I was pretty sure we cancelled everything under my name. Should I call those Panthera Finance company tomorrow and explain this?

Thanks all, hope someone can answer.

  • they are a real company , had to deal with them before ( someone opened a telstra home line under my name fraudulently ) , they made things super difficult, if i was you i would find out from agl whats going on , and deal with panthera via email/written form only, when i dealt with them , they lied , made things up , failed to deliver any evidence of what was owed and refused to contact telstra after i called telstra and cleared it up with them and provided panthera with reference numbers to interactions with telstra, this was over a 4 month period where i was told multiple times it was sorted.
the debt was incurred in 2010 i had to deal with them in 2015 ( hence me requiring evidence of what was owed which they promised but never supplied)

  • When Phil Anselmo comes to collect, youd better pay up

  • I don't know if this helps or is even that relevant, but I had the same thing this morning, for a little over 1k. Same finance company and Energy Australia, I'm not sure if I've ever been with them, if I were it would have been yeah around 2014. I plan on calling them tomorrow and finding out whats what, because I'm 95% certain I owe nothing.

  • Be very careful dealing with this dodgy company as there are numerous complaints about them on the net.

I'd say your first plan of attack should be to discuss this with Energy Australia - find out if you really do owe them anything, and the details thereof.

I recently dealt with them due a supposed debt from AGL from 2006.. yes 2006.
In the end i raised a complaint with the Water and Electricity Ombudsman (or what ever its called)
and they looked into the "debt" and found it was in fact paid, they instructed Panthera to cease collections activities and ever since they have left me alone.

Call Energy Aust first.. they are the ones with the power to get them to stop.

    • My wife's son has a similar problem that has arisen.
Energy Australia will not assist - they referred him to Panthera.

  • Hi Nobita,

I can confirm that Panthera Finance is a legitimate collection agency. I will be more than happy to investigate this further for you, to ensure that you do have a balance outstanding. Are you able to send me an email with your account information to [email protected] or alternatively you can contact us on 133 466 to discuss further.

    Thanks,

    Samantha

    • My wife's son has received a claim from Panthera.
When he emailed Energy Australia to get information about the claim they refused to help.
I am now searching for information on the relevant ombudsman.

  • I believe this company to be a scam operation. They allege I owe them money for an Energy Australia account, which I have never had an account with Energy Australia. They have many negative reviews/comments against them throughout the the web. I received a letter over a year ago about this and emailed them that it couldn't be me that has this debt, the name on the letter wasn't exactly right and I knew I never had an account with Energy Australia. Took them two weeks to get back to me. Recently I have received another letter about the same account, I rang them this time at first with some choice words and demanding that I never had this account. I later emailed them with the same 'story'. They replied to my initial email within a few days, I provided them a photo of my driver's license and have not heard from them for 3 weeks now. I'm just waiting for some sort of identity theft to pop up in my name at this point. Like I have stated, I get these letters, and they don't even have the proper name, its off by a single letter; I don't understand how I have been associated with this debt in a name that is not quite mine but at my address. Something is not right here…

    • In my case, I finally decided to believe it was legit. Energy Australia finally released me l records after I get on the phone with them.

It looks like after I disconnected the service, they sent me a bill to the property instead of to my email, and since I've had left the apartment, I couldn't have known that I got the bill.

So are you actually own them $570 or this amount including a admin fee?

    Panthera Finance in news toay

  • Hi guys I'm a financial counsellor don't forget overdue accounts and amounts owing become statute barred after 6 years and only 3 years in the NT and ACT so be careful if its an old bill.

    • And in Plain English, not enforceable.

  • Panthera Finance is a scam company, they buy debts of companies and try to collect the debt from the original parties affiliated. Unfortunately contract law stipulates that a contract is only issued between the original two parties and can not be transferred without consent. Not only do they behave in an illegal manner but do not provide any invoices or evidence of the debt that is required to be paid in full. Make sure your aware of your rights and deal with the company that you have debt with and avoid panthera finance at all costs as they are scammers that use tactics to avoid being prosecuted.

    • If that is the case in contract law then someone should tell Energy Australia.
And when contacted Energy Australi refuses to assist by providing any information.

  • I found this forum with a Google search.
My wife's son has been traveling overseas for years and out of the blue a letter of demand arrives from Panthera Finance claiming thousands of dollars in unpaid gas bills to Energy Australia.
When he tried to obtain information from Energy Australia they would not provide any details and instead referred him back to Panthera. In other words Energy Australia refused to assist. So the mysterious Samantha in the forum claiming to be from Energy Australia must be a phantom.
It is of concern as it looks like it is either a scam or identity theft. Either way Energy Australia will not help. They appear to be complicit in a scam.

    • You do realise this is an quite an old thread.

Why not get your son contact the email given by Energy Australia?

      • He did and Energy Australia will not assist him. They told him to contact Panthera.

    • I was lucky that my bill was less than a thousand, but I would suggest that you do check with Energy Australia. That Samantha could also be sockpuppeting, don't believe that account.

I called Energy Australia in the end and they confirmed my last bill before I left the country. You should try that.

      • Thanks - I tried Energy Australia - they are no help.
Energy Australia refuse to provide any information - they cannot even find someone to press a button and print out details of the supposed account.

  • I know this is an old post but would like to put my experience on here. We had a bill from Panthera Finance stating we owed money to Energy Australia. Called Energy Australia and we owe no money!! Call before you pay!!

  • I too have been receiving misc xero style invoices from various 'big name' companies (e.g Telstra, Energy Australia), that I know I have no association with. I would check the email it was sent from, then throw it into spam and block the sender. If you want additional piece of mind, call them up.
