Car Tyres - Where to Buy

Hey guys,

Wondering if you can point me to a good deal for Car Tyres.

Replacing tyres for a friend with a 2008 Camry Altise.

Looking to repalce all 4 wheels with either Michelin or Dunlop tyres. (These are the Brands they are happy with)

Happy to spend upto $150 per tyre. JAX tyres seems to have michelin energy xm2 for 137. Which is what I would go for?

Are these reasonable tires and OK price.

Thanks

Gimli son of Gloin

michelin energy xm2 are not bad on dry, but do not rely too much on them on wet. I have the 205/65/15 and I cannot wait for them to be ready to replace. Had Bridgestone er300 before and they had the best grip on wet or dry. A pity they only lasted 12-15000 km.
The xm2 look like they will go the distance, but nowhere near as good.

    • hmm 15,000km isn't much.

Thanks for the comment about wet performance. Are there any michelins which are good for wet.

    • +10

They are ready to replace when you can't rely on them in the wet, no matter how much tread is left.

  • Not sure. The other ones ones I know are the Bridgestone RE92. Absolute rubbish.

    • Bridgestone Potenza, has worn almost 50% in 18000 km on my Corolla. The no name Chinese brand tyres on the other hand had shown better life consumption. Original Yokohama that came with the car lasted 80,000km.

      • +4

The no name Chinese brand ones will last longer, of course!

The harder the compound (the rubber that makes up the tread), the longer it will last, but the poorer performance you will get (generally speaking).

I have RE050 Potenzas on my car, which are the softest of the road going Potenzas. (RE003 is the cheaper, harder, more durable and more popular chioce).

Even though they are on a sports car, which I am not shy to have some fun with, they have already lasted almost 35,000km. Due for replacement very soon, but if you look after your tyres properly (mostly correct pressures), then they will serve you for a decent period.

Costco normally have reasonable prices … free repairs for life too

    • Don't have membership.

Also do they do wheel alignment?

      • Easy enough to get a membership … you can get a refund on the membership at any time, if you don't think it's worthwhile.

        No idea about wheel alignment.

      • Costco dont do wheel alignment you will nees to do it else where, buy their tyre are generally cheaper and they will also price beat the others.

        • Think Costco had $100 off on a specific brand for SUV tyres and $70 off on sedan tyres, when you buy all 4.

        • +1

          @quasims:

I've seen lots of other stores with similar specials, eg buy 3, get 4th free, etc.

Hard to tell if the promotion is any good, without looking at the full cost.

        • @sp00ker:

Costco prices are a bargain even without $100 off. However, you have to be member to get the deal (costs $55 per year)

        • +1

          @quasims:

Bargain for tyres or other stuff? I just don't see that many deals from costco posted on OzBargains, which leads me to believe it isn't cheaper. This is in-line with my experience when I go to a warehouse (but I still go anyway).

        • @sp00ker:
Was in the market for 245/40 19 Bridgestone RE050A was 345 each. Michelin 245/40 19 R Pilot Ps3 was $342 each. Was $70 or $100 off on purchase of 4 tyres. These prices were lower than the market at the time. Unfortunately don't have a Costco in the NT, Costco doesn't ship unfortunately. Shipping would kill the deal anyway.

        • @quasims:

How did you check those prices? I can't see any prices on the costco website. It's not clear that those prices are available with the $70/$100 coupon. Also $100 off on a $1380 purchase is only a 7% discount. I'm sure you could haggle that much at a small independent retailer.

Unfortunately don't have a Costco in the NT

I suspect the cost of doing business in NT is somewhat higher than other parts of Australia, so it's probably not fair to compare costco to a NT retailer.

        • @sp00ker:

Australian Costco doesn't have a good web site, you need to walk in to check current prices.

+1. Was in NSW when I shopped for tyres.

Costco's bulk-discounting model goes against my personal values on sustainability and strategies of thriftiness.

Since I live so far away from a Costco and I detest the idea of committing myself to the same place anyway I would never recover that $60 membership-fee. It's a smart business model to enforce loyalty with the Average Joe but I despise most institutions in Australia that traditionally require membership, irrespective of their questionable histories ("Neigh, I don't have membership of a club within 5 km and I would not befriend a person of such stature that would even consider becoming a member of your establishment!").

      • +4

Costco's bulk-discounting model goes against my personal values on sustainability and strategies of thriftiness.

I actually don't think the bulk-discounting is what draws people into the warehouse. Most things tend to be cheaper in Woolies/Coles, when they're on sale and you don't need to buy the oversize quantities. Items that aren't on sale are probably slightly cheaper in costco compared to woolies/coles.

I think what draws people to costco is the variety of items (like Aldi), food samplings, cheap food court, good customer service. An occasional trip to a costco is generally an enjoyable experience, compared to going to the same supermarket every week. It's the same reason people like browse the random crap for sale in Aldi. I don't think costco members put much thought into whether the $60 membership fee is good value for money.

        • Thanks for explaining that side of it. I think Australia's target market for now may be as you describe since we have much less competition than the US.

So can I get free samples without membership? :)

          @peterpeterpumpkin:

So can I get free samples without membership? :)

Probably - They normally check your membership card at the door, but it just depends on the person at the door. If you say your family walked ahead or walk in to the warehouse from the membership/returns isle, there's nothing really stopping you browsing the warehouse and par-taking in the samples.

Could put 215/60R15 on instead to open up your choices. Pretty much the same rolling diameter.
Have them on my folks Commodore. Currently running Yokohama C-Drives, they have been a great tyre, good grip, good mileage, I think they are up to around 35k now, and plenty of tread left.

FWIW, I was involved in the launch of the XM2, and did the launch drive days at the Ford Proving Grounds at You Yangs. In all the back to back tests with other tyres such as the Pirelli P7, the XM2 ran better for dry and wet braking, rolling resistance etc.

If you live in Sydney, Tempe Tyres are cheap and efficient. They also have a wide range of tyres to choose from.

    • +1

Be sure to verify the manufactured date from Tempe/George's etc. Anything above 2+ years should warrant a decent discount.

    • +1

Yeah, Tempe Tyres, that's where I went. Got 4 of the Hankook K415 tyres at $100 each. I know zero about tyres, so I checked with a mate who imports tyres for a living on what type to get and where, and this tyre was his recommendation (also said the Koreans are taking over the consumer tyre market as they produce a better product at a cheaper price) and he said this store was absolutely fine too. (note: this was just for an ordinary suburban car driven normally on standard roads, and wanting best bang for buck tyres with good grip and good longevity, not after fancy pricey performance tyres).

One tip for this store: If you can avoid it, don't go around lunch time. I did, and it took about 1.5 hours from arriving to leaving as I went around lunch time, so it was packed with people all trying to get their tyres changed at the same time.

Bob Jane Tyres have a price match guarantee. Use the Tempe Tyres price for XM2's and book in to Bob Jane. They may need to order in the Michelin's.

But otherwise expect around $109 per tyre (fitted). JAX price sounds way too $$$

XM2's are fine for longevity and wet weather performance.

    • Is primacy any better?

      PS Tempe tyre is $135

      My size is 215/60R16

      • OK thanks for the tyre size. I thought your car took R15's.

        No idea re: Primacy

      • i've had Primacy 3 ST for about 25k, very happy with them, and they probably still have another 25k left in them. Planning to swap them to the rear and get another new pair of them for the front. Was initially choosing between energy XM2 and the Primacy and went for the latter as they are a newer model and quieter on the road.

        • What car do you have, if you don't mind me asking

        • @Gimli:
          mazda 3, 205/55 R16 is my size

  • I have recently purchased Bridgestone serinity plus tyre in my Camry for $120 and buy 3 get 1 free. Also alignment was free with 50000k warranty.t total cost was 360 in Melbourne.
Dunlop tyre was for $110 fitted so I went with bridgestone.

    • i missed the buy 3 get 1 free deal.

      • They come around quite frequently. Currently they have the Continentals on the deal. I recommend the ContiMaxContact MC5s as they've reviewed pretty well.

Remember to ask for a deal on the alignment as you can negotiate that. I got mine for half the price that was originally quoted.

    Try Tempe tyres

GT Radials are Choice recommended and are very cheap from Tyreright. I got 4 Eco ones fitted on my Elantra and I'm happy with the noise reduction and it's ability in the wet.

  • If you have a couple of weeks, tirerack.com ship to Australia and have the best Prices

  • I recently used tyroola and was quite happy with them, ordered Monday night and had the tyres Wednesday. We had the tyres delivered to us but you can instead get them to deliver to one of their selected service people and they will fit the tyres for you (approximately $100 for this). They have dunlops meeting your specs from $95 each or Michelin from $121 each.
So $95 x 4 + $100 fitting = $480 which is less than your budget of $600. There is usually some discount codes floating not around for this store too (they have a rep on here).

  • go to kmart tyre and auto and they will beat any price you find.

    • but they don't stock michelin AFAIK

      • i thought they got any tyre in you wanted.
They got our pirellis in, had to wait for pirelli to get them into Australia.
        KTAS beat Jax prices.

no idea why michelin for a camry, I would get bridgestone, goodyear, dunlop etc.

  • Find them cheap at Tempe Tyres, then call KMart Tyre and Auto and get them to beat the price - they will.
Much closer than Tempe for me, and no risk of getting the rumoured grey imports that have been sitting around in a warehouse for years.

    • You are my long lost brother!

  • Just out of interest, why does your friend think that Dunlop or Michelin are genuinely better than all other (especially less-known) manufacturers? Do they say that from a position of expertise and experience or is that just an idea they've developed in their minds? I'm no expert on tires, but if they're looking for the best value for money they should immediately wipe that preconception.

    • It's just what they are familiar with and don't really know enough about tyres to educate them.

  • +1

Pirelli P7 are good all rounders wet/dry imho. I got them for $125 per piece (17") at Bob Jane couple months ago.

    • Very good price!

  • Went to TyrePower last time, never again. Pricing was okay but they left my car unlocked, on the street for a period of over 12 hours and didn't resolve the issue I asked them to (and they said they would).

  • +1

    Gumtree?

  • I've used TempeTyres with no issues. Good price but also very busy due to the good prices!
    http://www.tempetyres.com.au/tyres?TyreWidth=245&TyreProfile…

If you'fe concerned about the tires sitting in warehouse, check the date of manufacture first: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=1…

    • Tempe tyres (and a few other places) import their own stock and the warranty is provided by the retailer, not the tyre maker.
That aside Tempe does offer prices that beat the regular outlets.
      BTW… A big +1 for Michelin.

  • Ozzytyres have always been good value for my (camry tyres). I always thought they were for high-end wheels and tyres but their regular tyre prices have been great in my experience.

  • Consider shopping prices for competitor models of tyres. Yokohama BlueEarth AE01 is a price competitor to the XM2.

You can look up the Manufacturer's RRP price on the official website and then telephone around to negotiate cheaper. I bought a pair 12 months ago (but much smaller sized tyre than yours) for $105 per tyre, RRP $115.

Am super impressed with the Yokohama BlueEarth tyres as they are very grippy for a commuting vehicle, yet very quiet and extremely low rolling resistance.

  • +3

Gimli, what are you high on because there are no cars in Middle-earth…

  • -1

A "friend" come on Gimli we know its for you.

  • Just got some Hankooks for my wife's 2014 Corolla. Highly recommended from Jax tyres and in my experience they know their stuff. They seem the part from what I've driven so far. I used to swear by Sumitomo HTR Sports, but noone seems to be able to get them in anymore. Awesome tyres, grip solid, great life and perfect in the wet.

I thought to Yoko's were rubbish, the Corolla has only done 45,000kms in them. Not worth the asking price IMHO.

  • Check out 'tempe tyres' if u live arnd syd.

  • After trying out quite a few brands of tyres I love Pirelli p7 Cinturato. Bought them for both cars and they are amazing. Should last at least 50k. Now I have Bridgestone r050a on my latest car and they are very noisy in comparison

  • +1

Checkout Michelin primacy 3 ST. Best I’ve used so far, performs really good and very quiet. They've got plenty of good online reviews as well. I Got them factory installed with my Accord, done almost 60k and still going strong (but have to say most of those kms were done on 100km/h freeways).

    • I've got Primacy LC, which I believe the previous model. They are factory fitted on my car and really good The car's already done 85k, planning to replace them closer to 100k.

    • What was the size and price?

I haven't had direct experience with them, but know people who have reported well about them.

  • Michellin PS3's from tempe. Minimal screech when cornering, insane grip in wet and dry and very comfortable. They also last about 25-30kk's.

You can get them for around that price range, depending on the size.

I've had Bridgestone RE002's (not bad) and some other Hankook sports tyres (which were extremely shit, never again). I think Michellin are the Ferrari of tyres; their Super Sports tyres are installed on many new super cars.

  • +2

I replaced tyres as part of my job for 15 years, value for money and a tyre that gives a nice even wear and won't feather and is good and all weather is a Kumo tyre. Most places won't recommend them as there is very little to almost no kickback from their reps but go out to the car park behind kmart tyre and auto and most tyre places and you will see most of the mechanics cars and the workshop car is running Kumo tyres now

  • +1

Go down to Lebo alley in Sydney. They all kill themselves trying to get your business. I love it !

  • I have got Bridgestone tyres on my Dualis past 3 years and have driven 44,000 kms so far and may go for another 10,000 kms or 4 to 6 months. Have a look to the tyresales.com.au (powered by carsales.com.au) would be helpful.
