Breakthrough Pascal Architecture

The MSI GTX 1080 Founders Edition is the most technologically advanced graphics card in the Nvidia collection. Improving upon its popular predecessor, the GTX 980, this upgraded version blows it out of the water in both performance and size. Thanks to its innovative Pascal architecture—which has been in the making since 2012— this GPU delivers clocking speeds up to 1733 MHz (and even more with over clocking). It packs 7.2 billion transistors into a smaller fabrication process, which makes for a more powerful, more compact, and more energy efficient GPU.

    + GST!

If they only look at is an a US$699 price, you won't cop GST. If the shipping affects the total dutiable value, you'll get GST. Big gamble!

    • -1

      Ah yes, I forgot.

      It is a gamble.

      • +1

Actually did some further reading, GST isn't payable on the freight cost if the value is below $1000. If the value of the item exceeds $1000, freight cost is included in determining the GST amount.

So it won't get GST on the way in, provided the AUD doesn't drop much more. If the AUD drops below US$0.69, you're screwed :P

    • Apparently GST should only be added if the cost of the item alone is over $1000, not including its shipping costs. If the item is over $1000, GST is incurred including the shipping cost.

Though there has been comments from Ozbargainers that they've been tagged on items below the threshold alone but above with shipping so YMMV

      • Yeah I just saw that on WP as well, that if it's below $1000 for just the item you should be fine

        • +2

I also heard of people getting charged GST because the shipping bumped the price over $1000 as well.

Luck of the draw I guess?

        • @Letrico:

Hmm could be :/ That's not good then for this deal… $1166 delivered if you copped a GST charge

        • need a seller to sell it for $10 and ship it for $800.

Isn't MSRP lower for AIB cards that will be factory overclocked and have better cooling?

Founders edition seems like a cash grab from NVidia being that people actually have 3rd party cards in their hands today..

    • Well you should consider your case and airflow… for many in SFF or without proper air flow in their full-size case, a blower style (founder editions) cooler is actually better.

      • +1

Board Partners have Blower-styled coolers, too (Such as MSI), for a cheaper price.

        • Yes, I think that's the only one I've seen. But I suspect they are inferior. Maybe not $100usd inferior, but inferior none the less. eg: lack of vapour chambers… backplate.. plastic shroud.

        • @GuniGuGu: Well, I'd be holding off judging them before they actually come out, then we'll know what's inside of them, it wouldn't hurt regardless considering the price is still pretty much the normal pricing… that is unless someone is really in need of a card, of course.

      • You're not wrong

    • Founders Edition is also a bit of protectionism. If Nvidia all of a sudden released pure editions that were cheaper than their partner's various cards I'm sure they'd lose a lot of manufacturing partners along the way. Having the Founder's Edition as a premium offering lets their partners compete on price and features.

      • You're arguing something that hasn't happened AFAIK ever, in the US atleast first party cards do exist but they're less common here.

        • Just because reference cards haven't previously been offered locally doesn't mean the point is invalid.

By not competing on price Nvidia is ensuring that they don't burn their manufacturing partners. Otherwise everyone would just buy the reference cards if they were cheaper than the third party options and the manufacturing partners would have zero differentiation between their most valuable products apart from potentially brand loyalty and perceived manufacturing quality.

It's a win for everyone except impatient early adopters: Nvidia sets the bar with a reference card design that gets them early attention and income from early adopters, third party manufacturers get to value-add their own hardware iterations/software tweaks and aesthetic differentiators without having to compete with a lower priced "pure" card and consumers get third party options with potentially more value, features and potentially higher performance all a lower price point than the reference editions once the third party cards are released.

With an estimated ship date of 1st of July, you'd be better off waiting.

    • +1

Massdrops usually take ages to ship so the 1080ti might be out by then.

  • +2

This is the founders edition card. Wait a month for the regular cards to come out, they will be cheaper and come with aftermarket coolers. You Should also be able to get them hopefully well under $1000AUD from overseas so GST will be basically not a problem.

    • ~$832 AUD from overseas (if not lower).

Patiently awaiting 1070 AUD prices (~$380US for non-FE versions?)

  • +1

This is actually $60USD more than the RRP on the 1080's which are $699…

    • +1

      Yeah, the postage cost…

$699USD + $59USD delivery to Australia = $1060AUD (According to Google conversion rates)

      • ahh.. ok

  • I'm hoping I can get a 1070 for under $600 AU, whether it's a local buy (unlikely) or an import (hopefully?).

    • I'm in the same boat. If the 1070 lands for around $600-700 (basically the price of a 980 non ti) then I'll probably bite. As US prices have the GTX 1070 pegged at $379, that puts it at roughly 55% of the value of the 1080, which means the 1070 should land here for approx $650. (55% of $1200, which is the average price of a 1080 Founders Ed)

If it's over $700 I'll probably just end up looking for a bargain 970 (or even two) once they start becoming discontinued.

    • Is the 980TI better than the 1070?

      • 1070 is slightly better by just 3-7 frames I seen the benchmarks on LinusTechTips.

        • the 1070 beats out a titan, go back check your stats, all reports are 1070 beats out a titan in all tests, 980 ti lags behind titan

          1 1080 smashes everything, over 35% faster than 1070
2 1070 smashes everything except 1080, marginally better than titan
3 titan smashes everything except 1080/1070
4 980 ti 65% slower than 1080, and until this week the fastest card available

      • No it's slightly slower.

Asus 1080 Strix is cheaper and overclocked

    http://www.tomshardware.com/news/asus-strix-gtx-1080-reveale…
Everybody who just bought the Founder's Edition is probably crapping their pants right now. Controllable LEDs that can even adjust based on temperatures, fan controllable ports, better and probably quieter cooling system, the OC version has way better stock clock rates. All $60 cheaper for the OC edition and $80 cheaper for the normal edition.

    • +2

I read that article too but I don't believe it's worth a neg. Even if only slightly, it's still a different product.

      • +3

I disagree because the ASUS Strix is a superior product and costs less. As such the deal isn't such a bargain and the better alternative needs to be highlighted to people before they purchase so they can make an informed decision.

    • +1

Those who bought the Founders cards knew exactly what they were getting really.

      • Yep, I reckon those that bought the FE mainly did it to:
        1) play around with while waiting for the better versions after which they'll sell or return to the store
        2) watercool

  • Hmmm, I do remember massdrop being awful with shipping, you might be better off getting a ship forwarder instead if anyone is planning on getting one of these.

  • Estimated ship date is 1 July and you won't be charged until shipment.

What do you base this on? I can't see any mention of that in the drop and Massdrops's normal practice is to charge all buyers as soon as the drop ends.

  • Expring this deal because there's a much better deal here: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/250542
