PowerColor R9 390X PCS+ 8GB GDDR5 Video Card $459 (~$20 Delivery / Free Pickup) + Free Mass Effect 2 & Warhammer @ Mwave

meamd16

Hi all, long time/first time.

Great price for the AMD fanboys on the 390x, a beast of a card. Not sure if it's a pricing error, but does seem to be more in line with the 390's pricing, not the 390x….

Cheapest around by some margin, and beats the previous deal (shipped from Amazon) - plus this one is in Aus. Cheaper than most R9 390 cards, and you're getting around 10-12% more performance.

Yes, it's a powercolour, so certainly on the budget end of the spectrum.
No, they're not a fantastic overclocking card
Yes, the 3-fan cooling solution from powercolour is loud.
Yes, the software sucks (although why would you use anything other than the installer direct from AMD, and the latest MSI afterburner is beyond me).

But bang for buck, you'll struggle to find a better AMD card (EDIT - for the moment), so stop complaining. IMHO :)

EDIT - also comes with a free copy of Mass effect 2 on PC (with code), and a Total War: WARHAMMER game code.

Obligatory reminder that the new RX 480 was announced today (US$200), for late June launch. We should see more discounts on the 300 series in the next month, so may be worth waiting.

    • +1

Came to say exactly this. That $199 price point is awfully compelling…

That said, great price and find OP!

      • +1

$199 USD = $275 AUD, and that's before you add any shipping or taxes

It's also rumoured to perform on par with a 390, which is still a step below this

        • +4

Add on taxes = $300. Add on another $50 for good measure, and it's still $100 cheaper than this. I'll refer to my comment below about performance.

All that aside, this is still a shitty time to buy into the old generation, I think, even if you aren't buying the new RX480. I don't mean to criticise OP, of course, this is still a good step below the regular pricing. But realistically, the price can only go down from here on out, so… depends if you want to wait and take a bit of a gamble.

I bought the MSI R9 380 (4GB) at release, it was $199 USD at launch but cost me $349 AUD from UMART.
Now the 480 is announced at 199 USD but our AUD is .70c… what do you think?

I will say it's very likely we will have to pay $150 more than our yankee friends.

something something polaris something something pascal

  • This is a good deal mate. Don't let people dissuade you
It's better than anywhere else for local, and the 480 is over a month away. On top of which, the 480 is only meant to give 390 level performance from what I've read. Leaving this still in the lead (for a price that seems not much more than we'll end up paying for the 480)

    • +1

There's always something better around the corner, right. Probably Sydneysiders getting their big girl pants on before the game tonight :)

      • +1

Watch it mate, don't make me pull out my arsenal of anti maroons stuff :P haha

All joking aside, for an AMD card, and in this price range, it's the best deal I've seen. So good stuff, and keep at it :)

    • +1

Performance-wise, we don't really know much about the 480. Leaks put it just below the 390X, and just above the GTX970. Unless its overclockability is in the shitter like the Fury cards, custom cards from manufacturers should be able to top the 390X IMO.

The announcement today contained frustratingly little information :/

      • +1

Unfortunately just like the initial announcement of the GTX 1070 though
They seem to love building hype from minimal info

        • +1

Agreed on both counts. That said, if you're waiting to blow $400 or $500 on a new GPU, it won't hurt to wait just another 4 weeks. You'll either get a 480 with change, or be able to pick-up a run out/second hand 970 etc.

Either way, can't really lose by waiting until July.

        • @LaTerrible:
Sadly I've given in and am moving to team green for this generation (coming from an R9 280).
The 1070 has the performance I want (for decent 4K), at the price point I set aside for an upgrade ($600).
So at least for now, I'm heading over to Nvidia

        • +1

          @Rail Rider95:

I respect you for going over to the green side, me as an AMD loyal fan would have to stick it out because i truly believe they will make a comeback so that they can keep up competition vs the behemoth Intel and their rivals, and i have seen xfire vs sli scalability and AMD has always been better at it. With Navi supposely to be afew smaller gpu on an interposer just like HBM scalability is here to stay and will just get better.

Even though they showed off a RX480 vs a GTX 1080 at suspstected settings, it still showed that it was only utilised at 51% and managed to pull ahead. Theoretically if once they optimise the gpu even at ultra settings it would still trade blows of surpassed and it will be less than $500usd.

All i am saying please hold out to see all benchmarks before you pull the trigger.

I totally agree with you, this video at this price is a total killer, with total war costing around 90 bucks and mass effect for 10 bucks, you are paying for the same price after conversions for slightly better power. Unless you are energy concious so 150tdp vs 275tdp.

          :)

        • @dcnguyen82:
Oh absolutely, I'm not one to jump the gun that quickly. At the very least I've gotta wait for the 1070 aftermarket and factory overclocked design, leaving plenty of time to hear all about Polaris before I commit.

That said, my 280/amd has disappointed me a little bit, mostly with certain driver settings that never truly worked, even after the step up to Crimson. Whereas I never had a problem with my nvidia powered laptop doing exactly what I wanted with resolution scaling.

Back into this deal, and it really is a good one imo

I don't think we should encourage deals for the old gen cards, unless they are outstanding, otherwise there will be too many in the coming weeks and months. Yes there, is always new tech 'just around the corner' but this is 4 weeks on a significantly improved new architecture that will be around for 2 years. I doubt anyone who is voting + is buying….

    • While I agree with what you're saying, OzB isn't youtube or other social media sites. There are clear guidelines as to what is and isn't a negative vote. Your neg does not constitute an appropriate negative vote.
For those who are too lazy to to click through, the reasons to neg vote a post (as opposed to someone's comment) are:

The deal is not the cheapest available
      Defective product
      Major issues with retailer

"Product is old and about to be superseded by potentially cheaper alternative" (Aus pricing for 480 haven't been announced yet, nor has it been benchmarked, thus the "potentially") doesn't count. Yes this is probably a poor financial decision for those who buy it, but then, so is 99% of things on OzB.

      • -1

while it doesn't fall into any of those 3 categories I don't think they're all encompassing, more examples of appropriate use with the overall purpose of the neg vote being:

To let others know about issues with the deal, merchant or product.

I would have thought it useful for anyone the community seriously considering this deal to be aware of this fundamental issue. Anyway, the community has sided against me.

    Thanks OP, Ordered.😁

    • +1

      Kudos, this card is amazing.

  • +1

Thank god for competition. Otherwise a monopoly would cause us to be paying increasingly high prices.

Here's hoping the new higher end AMD cards (480X and 490?) stands up against the GTX1080.

    • +2

We won't see anything higher than the 480 (possibly 480X) earlier than October, if not next year. They're targeting the mid-range market with this release, so no 1080 competitor yet.

      • Damn it, waiting game it is! Scrambled $1k together and was ready to buy an aftermarket GTX1080 once it's out in a week or two but now that I've heard about Polaris 10, I couldn't ignore the possibility of getting something much better value.

        • +1

Polaris 10 is this release, which is only focusing on the "mainstream" market

Vega, which is scheduled for release early next year (limited rumours suggesting release has moved to October this year) is supposed to be their high end cards. Theoretically, Vega will be using both their currently new die shrink as well as the new HBM2

        • Wait for reviews, buy 2 RX 480 and Xfire them if you have 1000. Wait for Vega and see how good it is and pull the trigger or sit there and be content with your xfire rig and wait for Navi to come out :)

        • @dcnguyen82: why do you assume it'll be 500 aud per 480? Didn't they say it would be 229usd for the 8gb?

If it was 1k for both, the 1080 doesn't seem that much more expensive then…

        • +1

          @ChillBro:

Apologies, he said he scrambled 1k, with 1k i am sure u can buy 2 of the RX 480 at 458usd which is around 700aud.

  • Lots of new cards are coming out. I would wait for the new version e.g., GTX1070 ..

    • +1

yes, wait for all reviews to investigate the throttling issues and give out all reviews especially the RX 480, not just GTX 1070 :)

  • Hello everyone, I'm not too familiar with computers and trying to see what is good, but would anyone recommend this graphic card for a mid to high range computer build? Also how does this compare to maybe like a R9 fury or even a GTX 980?

    • I'd say a fraction below both - but honestly for the $ this would be a pick in that range

  • thanks just got 2 for crossfire…. have a freesync monitor so sticking to amd for the moment
