    Found this on reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/GameDeals/comments/4m7zl4/amazon_st…

Note the second comment mentions that you really need ethernet to have a good experience with this thing.

I purchased my Steam Link and Steam Controller about 3 months ago from Amazon and love it.

      A few notes:
      * Steam Link does come with an AU power adapter and works with 240v no problems, all plugs are in the box.
      * Easy to connect wireless keyboards too. I purchased the logitech k400 and a wireless logitech anywhere mouse.
      - Works with Xbox 360 controllers
      - Steam Controller is great, has a nice touchpad to use it like a mouse on screen very intuitive. The virtual keyboard though takes alot of getting used to… I use my logitech k400 instead.
      - WIFI .. It does work .. sometimes. I live in a block of apartments and it all depends on how busy the other networks around me are. To get around this I have hardwired ethernet from my computer to my router to a switch at my TV which now eliminates that wireless streaming issue. All cable, no buffer/stutter.
      - Arcade / Couch games are the best. Sonic Racing with friends, GTA V cruising. TrackMania2, Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 all work I have no issues over wired network
      - Picture quality is great for games/movies but … I find that because there is compression in the stream its not the best for anything that involves reading on the screen like web browsing and word processing as the fonts get a little processed/blury.
      - I have not experienced the sound stutter issue.

Im currently streaming from an i5-3570k CPU, 16GB ram, Nvidia GTX 570 to a Samsung 2011 Plasma Full HD TV. (with game mode)

  • Few comments mentioning 5GHZ WiFi works well. But that's probably USA-based.

    • +16

5ghz is 5ghz no matter what country you are in?

      • I mean USA-based internet speeds.

        • +20

Internet has nothing to do with this. Not to mention our Mobile network is better.

The wifi reference is instead of a wired connection to your pc. Solely streaming from your pc, it's not Web based gaming.

        • +7

Why would internet speeds matter in a home network?

        • +6

          @scuderiarmani:
Ahhh okay I see how this works, cheers.

        • +16

Why are we down voting people that might understand, rather we could just explain to them.

          @scuderiarmani:
this is so tempting ever since I found out my routher has 5ghz :D

  • +2

Awesome thanks. Had it in my cart for ages.

I'm on a restricted network so finding the answer is difficult for me, can someone confirm that this is 110-240v? Or does it require a new cable?

    • +3

If the q & a section on amazon is to be believed then yes it is 110-240v and might also come with an Australian plug option.

      • Thanks, much appreciated.

It comes with quite a fair bit including a bunch of adapters for different countries.

I think its because valve arnt planning to release the steam link local retail any time soon, so they provide universal adapters for those that import it…Which is nice.

    • +5

I bought one from Amazon a few months back, it came with one of those universal adapters where you can swap the plug out.

      • Very nice of Steam to do that, I believe there are reasons it's not sold here, so they get around it well :)

      • How have you found the machine? Worth the purchase?

        • +5

I love it, it performs better than I ever thought it would. Played through the entirety of Dark Souls 3 at 1080p 60fps without a single stutter. (I've got it connected to ethernet so I can't speak to wifi performance)

  • Thanks Op. Bought one to test

  • Got one, thanks.

  • +7

Hmmm - that price is dangerously close to my purchase justification rationale…"if you're boss gave you a Steam Link after a few hours work, would you be happy?"

    • Haven't thought of that justification before - I like it!

  • +1

Really wanted to try this even though I have a shield TV that does the same thing, since the game streaming quality suffers when i use powerline adapters to connect.

Anyone who has both can comment if steamlink has better game streaming quality?

  • +2

If only it did 4K :(

    • +2

Yeah I'll be running it with a 4K TV, shame that, still would look nicer than consoles I'd imagine.

  • Hi. I already use Steam's in home streaming from my games PC to a laptop connected to my TV. Would this be an improvement to my current set up. Thanks.

    • don't think so, same tech just saves people requiring a 'PC' of sorts connected to their TV to do it

  • +2

@jekng, i dont think this would be any better, after all it is doing the exact same thing.

For anyone else, if you have a crappy PC or HTPC lying around somewhere, you can do the same thing without this device through the steam client. I recently setup my HTPC (intel i3) with no graphics card and can play all my games stored on my main PC.

  • +2

Can this be used a just a remote display, keyb, mouse option? Looking to get a more responsive display by using a PC from another room and Remote Desktop doesn't cut it. Not interested in gaming.

    • +1

I used it to watch a movie once. It streamed fine from my PC and you can control it by connecting keyboard and mouse to the steam link.

  • I know wired connection is obviously preferred, but is the latency OK over wifi?

  • +4

Do not buy this. All games have an "audio crackling" issue (Google it and you will find constant posts)

I have this thing wired and even then it is hit and miss. Some games work right of the bat, some don't some "alt tab" on the home computer making you get up and tab it back.

And just when you settle in and start having some fun BANG it causes steam / the game to crash on the main PC and you can't launch it again from the steam box.

I've found this no more useful / user friendly than the "steam stream" to another PC within the same house.

Useless box that I had such high hopes for.

Don't get me wrong it's close to being good but the constant issues make it not worth the effort.

    Thank you all for reading.

    • +1

I have frustrating issues from it too. It completely cuts off my wifi connection and every device gets kicked if the network. I just hope new firmwares will fix the issues

      • They won't I remember the audio issue had "steam reps" replying to the original concerns saying they will fix it.

        That was 6 months ago.

    • Thanks so much for the review - almost bought it until I read this.

      • Yeah but… the others above all have no issues. Some of the negative comments above seem to be PC related.

  • +1

I bought it for $80! Noooooooo

    • +2

Hows your experience with it been?

      • its been bad, like i mentioned from my previous comment, it completely cuts off my wifi connection and every device gets kicked off the network. The first time I used it was ok, but for the second and every time afterwards it's not stable at all. We looking at connecting it via ethernet but need to wire the cables across the house first.

  • +3

Get a long enough HDMI cable and use HDMI out from your gaming PC to your TV. That'll be no issues.

    • good luck connecting a controller

      • I don't understand the connecting a controller part… I have a 360 wireless connected, and a 5m HDMI to my TV, and it all works.

        • +2

I'm assuming most people have their gaming PC more than 5m from their TV, that might as well be a HTPC if it's that close. Wireless controllers and USB have a short distance.

  • From a couple of comments on Amazon, looks like you can stream desktops and other software from PC to TV.

Specifically anyone know if it works with Foxtel Go?!

    And presumably other non-steam games.

    • add CMD.EXE to it, type explorer.exe and hit enter
opens up My Computer(This PC) then allows you to browse yo whole PC, im sure there are other ways but this worked for me

  • sigh

Almost got through the day without buying more tech. Thanks, OP.

  • Any deals on the steam controller to get at same time?

  • What convinced me to buy was thinking about all the multiplayer games I have on my PC that I will never play with friends, because it's not in the living room. Now I can make this possible, and there's lots of fun local multiplayer games.

Also picked up a steam controller at $50 USD, not a bad price looking at recent "deal" on Ozbargain.

All up, just under $100 USD delivered.

  • I bought one when they were released in the USA my experience has been:

Can screen cast but you need to be able to launch from steam, you can use steam controller as mouse. It can be a pain for netflix as its basically a workaround.

Occasionally steam on the PC dies and needs to be restarted, particularly if launching non steam programs like above.

    Haven't noticed the sound crackle.

Sometimes the video sequences at the beginning of games get cut due to a lag

    Haven't tried wifi only

I think for the price it's quite good, especially if your pc is in another room and you want to play on the tv

  • +1

Bugger, seems to have gone outta stock at Amazon for that price.

  • So much debate over wifi/Lan.

A cable is wayyyy better than wireless in like a million ways…. So much more reliable. Everything that i have that can be connected via rj45 i will. Switches for everyone!

    • +2

A cable is wayyyy better than wireless in like a million ways…

      Ok, I'll start:
      1. It's hard to garrotte someone with wifi.

  • +2

Available for order again (though OOS) for the discounted price.

    • What's OSS?

      • +2

Out of stock, but I guess the better statement would be it's available at the discounted price for backorder.

      • Add it to the cart as normal and they will send you one when they become available again. The price is the same.

  • Just ordered one on back order. Thanks!

    • Me too thanks OP

  • Anyone know the cheapest wireless controller which works with this thing? I only have PS3 controllers and I think they need to be plugged in to work.

  • Would just connecting a 10m HDMI cable from the TV to my gaming PC (which is in the living room) be just as good or better?

    • If you have a wireless controller that works over 10m and/or a powered 10m USB cable, maybe.

  • noticed this on sale again along with the controller.
