    Too expensive for previous-gen CPU.

Try Dell Inspiron 15 via Dell ebay (Core i5-6200U)
You get Skylake generation CPU. Every other spec is the same.

Better value for $600 delivered with CLICK20.
    Don't forget 1.25% cashback

      Agreed!

Plus, for $40 extra (with CLICK20 applied), you can get the same machine with 8GB memory

      No brainer IMHO

Thanks for the links guys. Almost bought one but opted not to as the 2016 model has a pretty bad screen from various reviews I've read. This one probably explains it most clearly:

        http://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/laptops/dell-inspiron-15-50…

As I'm buying for my folks who don't have the best eyesight these days, I'll be opting for a laptop with a better screen.

        • "better screen" as in an IPS display? or just a brighter panel?

IPS is usually reserved for business-grade laptops and higher end premium prosumer devices. You'd be looking at a customized Lenovo Edge series or a Dell Latitude from the Outlet. Or the gaming specced Inspiron 15 7000 which is $1100+ after CLICK20

You won't find a 1080p IPS panel in some cheap consumer laptop, so might have to raise your budget to $800+

(there are some exceptions though such as the Toshiba Chromebook 2 which has a 1080p IPS screen which goes on $330+ on Amazon)

Or you could just buy them a 22" LCD to hook it up with, if the laptop is only used as a desktop replacement.

        • @scrimshaw: 167 nits of brightness is a really dim display. Looks like the Acer would be the better buy in this instance as there is not much difference in processing power.

        • @adr8:

you really, REALLY like the Acer huh? You can buy what you want, I'm just providing tech advice as I always do. If you want a deal that gets plenty of upvotes, PM me, I will give you a link and you can post it for the sweet sweet karma. You won't have to credit me for it.

I don't care about + or -'s. Capish? I am not here to rain on anyone's parade nor do I care about depriving someone of ozbargain upvote points. They mean nothing.

        • @scrimshaw: LOL no need to get offended… Just want to know if you still think the Dell is the better buy as you criticized the Acer's panel when it actually looks to be the better of the two.

        • @scrimshaw:

"better screen" as is compared to other products at the same price point. Most of the reviews indicated the dell screens were both dull and dim compared to other entry level 15" laptops.

TBH, 1080p on 15.6" would be bad for my folks… the icons on Windows desktop would be too small so 1366x768 for them is actually ideal at this screen size. I'd get them a proper monitor but they don't want their desk crowded with one and am happy with 15.6". Besides, they only need an i3 CPU… hoping to find one close to $400.

        • @Mugsy:

          Look Asus x540la (Haswell)

Should be one on ebay that you can buy with the upcoming (unconfirmed) eBay sale.

          Just an example

        • @scrimshaw:

Thanks mate. That looks like it'll do the job.

        • @scrimshaw:

Just picked up one from Futu Online with the current ebay sale. Looking forward to setting it up this weekend (hopefully it comes by then) and giving it to mum and dad the following weekend.

LOL Full HD screen for less than $600, if you find one feel free to post it.

      • screen type: TN panel

      triggering intensifies

      • inflated quoted RRP $996

      triggering reaches critical levels

      • The Dell you linked above also has a TN panel.

  • This may look good on spec but personally I would never ever get another ACER laptop. The quality is at the lowest level but the after sales is even worst! Sorry! I just couldn't find any good things from ACER! What a shame!!! It used to be one of the top brand in Taiwan!
