Is This Coworker Trying to Make Me Look Bad?

On Friday, I was given an urgent task in a short notice. Manager requested I gave status update by the end of the day. The task was given to me at 7am during a meeting call. After that I needed to get kids ready for school. This coworker recently joint the company who was higher ranked but not my lead or supervisor. He/she offered to help look at the issue while I was busy with kids. I kindly accpeted and then went on doing my things.

By the time I got to office. There were multiple messages left in the team chat room. He/she posted a number of messages showing he/she had solved one problem already.

I was a little surprised, but I quickly moved on as the task wasn't completed.

During the day, he/she tried to check with me on my progress a few times. I kindly replied. He/she thought it's unfair they gave this task in such a short notice and he/she would be very happy if he could be any help. Again, I showed my appreciation.

It was after 10pm Friday night, and I finally decided to wrap up the day. Everthing was done except an error message that's out of my knowledge. So I included it in my status to manager and other involving team members. Half an hour later, before I turned off my computer, i received a pm from this coworker asking again how I was doing. I honestly told everything and he/she said I did well and I should get some rest . He/she also asked me fir a copy of the status email to my manager. I thought he/she just wanted to be in the loop, so I did.

The next morning, I as usual checked for emails and replies from manager. There was none. I then checked on the team chat room. Guess what I saw? A number of people posted thanks messages to this coworker. I scrolled up to see what happened. Turned out he fixed the error I mentioned in my status email to my manager last night. Looked like he did some investigation and resolved the issue once again after I went to sleep and then publicly announced it to everyone!

No wonder no one replied to my email. I feel I was ignored or rather redundant. Thanks to this coworker for making me look bad.

What am I gonna do? Pretending a fake smile and then move on? I understand as a new comer you are keen to show your worth, but by doing things to make yourself look good and others bad? So low!

he fixed the error… he did some investigation and resolved the issue after I went to sleep

This coworker sounds like a great employee. Going above and beyond to make sure the job gets done, even though it was outside their responsibility. Plus they regularly communicated with and helped you throughout the day. I wish they worked for me!

Thanks to this coworker for making me look bad

It isn't the coworker making you look bad

    What am I gonna do?

Thanking them for saving your bacon would be a good start. Stop focusing on what other people are doing in life/work and look at how you can make yourself better/happier. Don't look for faults in other's to compensate for your own.

    • Thanks for your comment. You are right. He/she did a good job from employer's perspective. I thank him/het for doing things that I wasn't able to, but I also think next time before he/she go ahead doing things for me, he/she should mention that he/she will look into it.

Hey gcdollar I don't think this was anything evil - if the person joined fresh, they were simply being enthusiastic and helping out someone else. The only little niggle is that they announced fixing the issue to everyone before letting you know beforehand (as a courtesy).

You're not looking bad through them solving the error, but you may end up looking bad if you didn't join in thanking them.

Sounds like many Hollywood movies where you're enraged at the new guy so much you don't see clearly

    • It's not that I have been enraged at the new comer. Only this time, I felt being looked down by what he did without consulting me first.

    Considering

    and

he just did something you couldn't do - whether that was because he was more knowledgeable or because he put in the time and effort to do it. I don't think he made you look bad, he did something you couldn't do, he seemed to be helpful and he saved you a bit of work.

All in all, he deserves the congratulations he gets because he put in the time and effort - both all throughout the day to help you out then after to fix the problem after you had left. That's worthy of praise and I think everyone is right in giving him that. Just because they give him praise doesn't mean that they look down on you or don't appreciate you.

If you're that desperate for praise, life will be hard. You did what you could, he did what he could. The essence of teamwork is to work towards a common goal - fixing the problem and it seems like that was a success, you shouldn't let your own desires get in the way of the team's success.

I'd call some bikies to scruff them up a bit in the car park after work. They won't mess with you again after that.

Thats right. Release the hounds…unleash fire and brimstone on this employee.

Paulsterio is right. Looks to me this was teamwork at its finest. Everyone had eyes on the prize. A common goal achieved. Why does it matter who fixed it? Would you rather you fixed the issue a day or two later? Do you think your customer cares who fixed the issue or that the issue is fixed?

The pressing issue here is that you take work calls at 7am before you leave home???

You're more tolerant than I am, that's what voicemail is for…work shit can wait til I hit the orifice! ;)

And then work until 10pm. That's a very long day. I hope you work for a global company and not one that expects workers to be at it 24hrs per day.

Agreed. One of the hardest (but most worthwhile) lessons I have learned is about work/life balance. When you're at home, be at home; when you're at work, be 100% at work…everything in between isn't fair to either employer or family! ;)

Thank you everyone for your comments. I have to admit that I let my own eager to get praise in the way. I should have looked from a bigger picture, not just my own. I will say thanks in office today.

I'm just surprised no one suggested bikies

Somebody did. Now you look bad like OP.

      Thought for the day:

There is no "i" in Team.
(there are however 2 "i's" in bikies).

      • +2

There's no "i" in team, but there's a "me" mixed in there.

    • This is nothing personal. Who doesn't want his or her effects being recognized? But I personally won't do something like that to show my capability is better.

Erm… so even if you were capable of doing something that the boss wanted done, and no one else could do it because it was 'out of their knowledge', you would not do it, in case someone else thought (erroneously) that it would make them look bad?!?

I'm glad you don't work for me.

  • Sounds like your manager gave you a job that was unreasonable to be able to complete in a day..

    • They have high expectations for sure.

My mind boggles that people are at meetings at 7am and still working at 10pm. I wouldn't worry too much, that person will burn out and be out on either sick leave or stress leave before you know it.

  • FYI: I started at 7am and finished after 10pm, but that didn't mean I was working non-stop. As mentioned I had to turn to kids after morning calls and usually get back to work after putting kids to bed at night. It may sound unusual to some of you, but pretty much everyone does this at where I work. And,no,I can't tell you where I work. ☺

  • Shoot him with a crossbow
Anyone ambitious enough to be the first to answer my call is too ambitious for my ship

    • Crossbows are illegal in most states/territories…might I suggest a stout compound or recurve bow instead…

He worked and you slept. He should be taking credit for doing more than what he should. Simple as that.

I can see where you are coming from OP. I would have felt slighted as well, as there was no response from your manager on your contribution. However, I also think you should have included this co-worker on the status update email rather than have them chase for it later that night. Overall, I think let it go - and bear in mind that they are credit hungry for future interactions
