Original eBay 20% off selected stores deal post

I was looking for some new HDDs to do a fresh Xpenology build and came across these Seagate NAS drives which I had been price monitoring in Amazon ($139US so don't bother).

These drives offer a good mix of performance and reliability vs cost, as I did comparisons with WD Red drives which cost more. Brand loyalties aside, for a non-critical NAS in RAID (not backup, that's separate) these drives will do and should outlast standard desktop drives somewhat, otherwise I'll kick myself for spending the extra cash.

There is also a Seagate cashback offer active currently till 30-Jun-2016 which brings down the cost per drive when buying 2 or more to $176.20.

Seagate Cash back is also eligible with 6TB and 8TB drives.

And as always, remember to use CashRewards for eBay to get additional 1.25% cash back.

  • How would these compare to buying one of the 5tb drives on Amazon.

    https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Desktop-External-Storage-STDT…

I am using these drives currently in my Xpenology build. Seems to be working fine, but i am close to filling them up, so looking at buying a couple more.

    Any thoughts?

I mainly went for NAS drives over standard desktop internal drive due to the expected 24/7 usage in my builds and just didnt want to deal with early failures or bad sectors.

Also the firmware on NAS drives is slightly different regarding error seek and write times/time outs so theory is that it should be more responsive? but i havent experienced a NAS drive before.

I'm moving from a pooled JBOD setup so I'm still annoyed about losing capacity to parity….

  • +2

Pity that Seagate didn't up the bonus for the higher capacity drives…
    This is the maths:
    2x 4tb at $239 x 20% discount = $382.40 less $30 cashback = $44 per tb storage.
    2x 6tb at $425 x 20% discount = $680 less $30 cashback = $54 per tb storage.
    2x 8tb at $619 x 20% discount = $990.4 less $30 cashback = $60 per tb storage.

    2x 8tb WD NAS at $549 x 20% discount = $878.4 = $54.9 per tb storage

  • Really wish there is a 2tb desktop drive deal soon.

Side note, these are only $199 @ MSY, walk in walk out

    • +2

You mean, walk up to, wait in line, wait, wait, wait………

      • +1

Haven't (honestly) encountered that at the Cannington WA store

        • I have at a couple, I turn around and move on.

      • +2

"oh sorry, seems we don't have any, though we have the next model up"

disgruntled but still buys the next model

  • 191 after the 20% off is a bit disappointing when Shopping Express have them at 195 everyday price plus shipping.

    • +2

195 SE price, 239 FutuOnline (same store) is a bit of a joke! The usual Ebay jack up prices!

      • +1

They have been clear in the past. They said that it of course costs them more to sell on eBay vs their own store, they have higher prices there.

  • Bought four of these when the promo came out - cost $205 each so after the cashback came to $190 a pop. If that promo is still going and you can get them for even less, then definite bargain! Mine are running in a Qnap NAS - keep in mind that they have been tweaked to run in a NAS so may be a little slower (compared to a normal drive) if using as a single drive so I'd then pair them with a SSD for the o/s. I was a little wary of getting them (have had some bad experiences with Seagates in the past) but so far they seem fine. If you are using the NAS to store movies etc then I'd also consider the Archive drives - slower again in particular when writing to them, but also (at $276 after discount for 8TB) cheaper per TB…. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Seagate-Archive-8TB-3-5-Internal-…

    • cool this is good to know as FUTU do have reputation for not really packaging their item all that well…..my order came in an oversized box and minimal bubble wrap so I'm a bit worried about drive longevity.

RE: the archive drives, I thought i read that as they have SMR that they arent good for NAS where theres more read/write cycles and also potential for the SMR drives to fail as they fill up and cant do clean up???

  • The promotion limit is up to 500 drives claimed. Once this limit has been reached, the promotion will end, even if it is before 8th July 2016.

Find it hard to believe that 500 drives have been claimed already.

    • Which is why it's still available:

      "More than 10 available / 115 sold"

      • 500 nationally through every reseller isn't it? I wouldn't count the cashback as a given! I'm hoping it is avail by the time i get my drives thou.

      • +1

yeah but the promo is for all Oz seagate distributors in theory so i'd still be quick if you're planning to claim to save disappointment. Wish they had a counter….

        • I would have thought they would have hit 500 ages ago. Counter could only count the number of applications, some will be knocked back for various reasons. I'd assume they won't know if it's hit 500 till they start processing them, so I wouldn't assume that because they site/form is still up, that they haven't already hit 500. Minimum for cashback is 2 drives, so that 500 is only a maximum of 250 customers. Got to assume some would buy more, so maybe 200 customers for the entire country (although obviously not everyone who qualifies actually claims).

        • @rhangman:

Sorry, you meant cashback, not this eBay sale.

    • It's confusing, but I think the 500 drive limit may be just for the extra cash back you get if you buy drives and a selected NAS device……

      • It's in the terms and conditions for the hdd cashback.

        • Wow. You're quite correct of course. I've already got mine - fingers crossed for everyone else that they decide to keep it going even after they hit that limit!

        • @PlasticSpaceman:

What did you submit as the reciept. want to make sure I dont give them a reason to deny. I notice futo online has multiple names ..

        • @addict: Sorry - I actually didn't purchase mine from Futu, but rather picked them up from CPL so had a normal receipt. I needed the drives quickly as one of the existing ones was generating SMART warnings…… Futu should provide a tax receipt with their ABN on it so just use the name that's on that.

  • Thanks OP, Looks like I grabbed the last unit :-)

    • +1

Thx I have reported to mods to mark as out of stock.

Remember to test the drive as soon as it arrives as futu aren't gentle with packing.

  • This looks back in stock and ends today! Just purchased for the cash back.

Fingers crossed that FutuOnline is an authorized seller. As its a great deal with the cash back.

    Cheers!
