Fantastic sounding speakers, especially at this price.

RRP $349 so it's less than half price.

The Good Guys has it on clearance at $229. Myer at $300. Sony Store at $349. Can't find it at JB HIFI, Harvey Norman, or Officeworks for some reason.

If you're interested in the wifi-enabled SRS-X77, try this instead.

  • How is this compared to the bose soundlink mini or the full size soundlink?

      http://www.tomsguide.com/us/sony-srs-x55-bluetooth-speaker,r…

"The Bose SoundLink Mini produces comparable bass levels, but the Sony eclipsed the Bose when it came to midranges and treble tones. The horns on the "Uptown Funk" sounded brighter and sharper on the SRS-X55, and the vocals resounded clearly, for an all-around balanced sound."

      http://gadgetmac.com/reviews/sony-srs-x55-wireless-portable-…

"It even rivals Bose's similarly sized Soundlink 3 at nearly half the cost."

"If you think that JBL or Bose still have a horse in the race with the Charge 2 or the SoundLink Mini 2 then you're mistaken. The X55 destroys them both with its powerful, deep low-end and easily outperforms the more expensive SoundLink Mini 2 without costing as much."

This is a very very good deal for a very very good speaker. I have the previous model SRS-X5 and I love it. I would definitely buy this one if I didn't have the previous model.

Great deal! I bought this for about $199 on sale at JB and have been very happy with good base and crisp sound. I picked it over the Bose Soundlink Mini (impressive for its size) as those Bose was too bass heavy and seemed to have a bit of distortion (in store anyway).

Agreed, this is great speaker for this price, but one thing I don't like is the charger is not micro usb, so you can't use a powerbank to keep it going if you are out and about.

    • Adapters/different cable doesn't work?

      • It charges using a laptop style round plug.

The usb port at the back is for using the speaker as a powerbank to charge your phone and not for charging the speaker itself.

      • Doubt that will work since the usb port at the back of speaker is for charging things like your phone and not for charging the speaker.

Now if you are suggesting plugging the round end of the plug. Don't think it's the right type connector.

        • I was suggesting the round end of the connector, that's if you want to use your powerbank as a charger. Just need to figure out what size plug fits. If you have one, experiment on it. If it doesn't work, send it back to the seller free through paypal's return promotion.

@Izefyre: you might get the right round connector type but you are going to need a powerbank that outputs 15V. Unsure what would happen if it outputs less. Will it even charge?

          DC IN 15 V jack

Audio over Bluetooth has improved somewhat but it's still only an option for those who aren't fussy about audio quality.

    • +2

Agree, if I hadn't already bought the SRS-X5 two years ago, I'd be going for the SRS-X77 with wifi.

      • Boba, so the SRS-X77 would be noticeably better than SRS-X55?

        • +2

Should be but I haven't tried.

Listen to 128kbps, 320kbps and FLAC and tell me you can't tell the difference.

      • So I guess you think some people believe they have magic eyes to tell the difference between SD and HD video.

    • Audio quality over Bluetooth is no different than audio quality over optical or hdmi right???

My understanding is it's digital so no difference. Does it compress in some way?

      • +1

For the most part Bluetooth is pretty decent these days, but it's not as good as a wired connection.
        http://superuser.com/questions/464388/3-5mm-analog-audio-vs-…

Having said that, many people would find it difficult to be able to tell the difference.

      • No that is not correct. Bluetooth is VERY low bandwidth, a lot of compression is used.

        • This statement is wrong on many levels.

If your playback device supports AptX (most modern Android phones / tablets do), then it will play your FLACs near-lossless. Anything lower, e.g. MP3 320 kbps would not be compressed at all.

For Apple users, this speaker supports AAC, so if all you listen to is tracks from iTunes (unless its ALAC, then you're out of luck) or stream Apple Music, then there wouldn't be any compression either.

I use this speaker with a Sony Xperia Z5 series phone as my playback device, and losslessly play my hi-res library, most of which is 24 bit / 96 kHz FLAC or DSD, via Sony's proprietary LDAC codec. Yes, over bluetooth…

I have a wired audio set up costing five figures, so I do have something to compare it to, and let me just say that this little guy sounds pretty darn good and is an absolute steal at this price. I had no doubt that it would sound well with modern pop / hip-hop, but what especially surprised me is how well it can handle even the most complex classical arrangements.

    • As someone who has followed developments in bluetooth audio quality for many years, owns this speaker and is also very "fussy about audio quality", I challenge this statement.

    Geass

  • Srsly?!

  • Excellent Buy . Cheapest I have seen for a great speaker

  • Just curious what situation you would need this because there's Bluetooth in the car and then these days hifi also has Bluetooth. You can also buy a cheap logitech adapter hook to alarm clock player or dock etc

I can only think if you go picnic or something but hardly go anyway

    • You might hardly go but there are others that often go places. Doubles as a powerbank also. Picnic. At the beach.. having a barbecue at the park. Camping. On a boat fishing.

      • Then you probably need a waterproof one for fishing haha

        • +1

There are splashproof models like srs-xb3. However this should be fine if the boat you are in have a roof and water will not splash on this portable speaker. So you would place this where you can place your mobile phone so it dont get wet either.

I use my X5 as a speaker next to my bed. Let's me stream music nicely without powering up a PC. :)

I took mine camping and it was awesome listening to crisp and clear music out in nature. This is probably the best use of this speaker.
Also it is great for travelling as it takes up very little luggage space and you take good sound quality with you wherever you go.
It's not for replacing your home hifi system it's for taking your home hifi system with you in a bag.

Hornsby had 2, on display out of box, at 10:00am this morning

I have the Bose Soundlink III and comparing it to my friends Sony SRS X55 the Sony has much bass and sound than the Bose SoundlinkIII at higher volumes. Wishing i bought this instead of the Bose Soundlink III.

  • For this size and weight, it is not very portable. If you want a portable speaker for outdoor use then you should look for something lighter and more durable. If you only use it at home, a decent 2.0 or 2.1 speaker around $100 will give you much better sound.

  • Bought one at Hurstville this morning .

  • WTF…..no option to buy online? Is this normal for Bing Lee? I am from Melbourne, so genuine question.

  • I've bought from them online before. The speaker must be out of stock.
