Obligatory "wait a few weeks until the price stabilizes/non-founders 3rd party cards come out".

    • Obligatory "+1"

    • Isn't it "wait for something newer, faster and better" to come out……

      • Geez petty ozbargainers down voting that.

      • Her reference is made regarding price reduction after the prosumer tax, not other models. This applies to pretty much everything tech, regardless of what other models may be out.

      • Well for some it is. For others it's buy a GTX 760 that cannot play any modern games properly :p

        • No way, my gtx 760 plays stardew Valley pretty well!

kidding aside I'm able to get 140fps on overwatch altho low settings

      • Gees I was joking and taking the piss off MissKitty post and I get neged, bunch of wowsers…

        • +1

its different, MissKitty was just talking about the price, you were talking about newer better card, 2 different things.

        • +1

You're meant to white knights girls on the Internet to get the +1's playa

    • The retail price for non-founders card supposed to be US$379, this is not much different price from the founders ed.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GeForce_10_series#GeForce_10_.…

      • The founders cards are still a worse bargain than this. The founders should be substantially cheaper, with their old blower design and lack of fans. It's just made of metal instead of plastic, big woop.

        • But it really makes no different, founders throttles itself like the normal version will. whole thing was a scam

    • +1

The issue is the prices are inflated in Australia ($630 on Amazon shipped, compared to $779 on PC-CaseGear shipping excluded) and many of the cards we want may not ship to Australia. There is a comment below about NewEgg not willing to ship the 1080 Gaming X to Australia.

With the crazy demand I also don't see the price coming down that much in the near future (maybe after the x490 gets released, but not the x480 as it doesn't compete in the same tier)

If you preorder now through Amazon- then we will have locked in a decent price, and as the release date for the card is known, and when other custom cards get released, you can assess if this card is still worth it. If people find a better value card, you can just cancel your Amazon order with no consequence.

That is what I plan to do anyways.

I thought the RRP for non-founder cards was around $379 US, so the price will hopefully fall to that level once these fantastic cards cease to be so rare. $379 US would make the card around $550 AU with shipping on a fee free credit card.

Shipping weight is 5 pounds so that is $12.50 US + the order shipment fee. $2.50 / pound to Australia is extremely cheap compared to what the crooks running USPS charge.

As the situation looks, only blower-style cooler cards (not Founders' Edition) would be at the MSRP, this is an ongoing debate concerning NVidia and Board Partners on the pricing, so it's unknown if the prices would be close to the MSRP or not.

But for now it's believed that it could be cheaper than FE, but more than the "MSRP". I sure hope that my expectation is wrong, however.

    • is blower type the one with the single intake fan? Or is it with the dual/tri exhaust fans with heat pipes? Which is more expensive and which is better?

The founder edition types look like the intake fan which blows out the back of the case.

      • +1

I believe blower is referring to a centrifugal fan as compared to a axial fan. Axial fan looks like a "normal" fan, centrifugal looks like on Founders Edition: the air is "scooped" up by blades on the rim of the fan.

The reason they're called blowers is centrifugal fans are much less effected by static pressure which is a fancy way of saying they move more air through a confined space like say through the fins of the GTX 1070 - axial fan in the same situation would slow down to a crawl down and lose a lot of effectiveness.

        • Ok, well my experience with centrifugal fans is that they're a lot noisier than axial fans. Having said that, I have stayed away from such fans for the last 5 years so I don't know if they have improved since. But I've had at least 3 cards using this design and they are very noisy under load.

I love Gigabyte's Windforce or MSI's Twin Frozr/Hawk design because those are much quieter, and I've stuck exclusively to these brands since.

So back to the point in question. If only centrifugal cooled cards are available at MSRP, I think I'll pay more for the axial type. Thanks. This seems like not as bad a markup as I initially thought. I'll still wait a bit however.

        • @lostn: >Ok, well my experience with centrifugal fans is that they're a lot noisier than axial fans.

Yes they usually are - most of the noise is air turbulence because they move a lot more air.

anywhere to backorder the 1080 version? I can only find the overpriced one from private seller.

This same card goes for $779~ locally; a $120 difference is a hard choice on local warranty.

I prefer Amazon warranty to be honest.

You report it as defective, and they immediately ship out a brand new unit, without even waiting for your return to arrive to inspect if it really is faulty. It will take a couple of weeks to get to you, in which time you use the integrated Intel GPU and stick to some indie games or minecraft for a bit. They won't charge you for the replacement unit as long as they receive your return within 30 days. Shipping up to $15 USD is credited back to you.

You buy from an MSY or CPL, they will inspect it first, and if they find it not faulty they'll even charge you some $35 fee for wasting their time. You still have to wait a few weeks for that thing to go back to the supplier and repaired. The wait time is going to be about the same as waiting for Amazon. Except Amazon sends you a brand new replacement, not a repaired/refurbed unit.

Even worse, CPL/MSY testing is very cursory. If your RAM causes only intermittent issues, they will see if it boots and say, "it's fine". If the thing won't boot, they'll accept it has problems. But if these problems are like random BSODs, they won't even see it, and will claim it is no problem. I had a GPU that made really unacceptably loud fan noises, but not immediately. It's only after the thing has been on for a few hours. They weren't willing to keep it on for a few hours. They boot, right away see no problem, rejected it and tried to charge me a fee.

The only time a local store will give you an immediate new replacement is if it is found faulty within DOA period, which is 7 days. More than that and you're going to have to wait for it to go back to the supplier, then supplier to send it back to manufacturer, and then the replacement to go back through the entire supply chain to you.

I have no concerns about international warranty with Amazon. Unfortunately, a year from now it will be a much less attractive place to shop, because they'll be charging import duties on everything. Thanks Mr Hockey. So enjoy it while it lasts.

      • Amazon even refunded you the price drop difference if its still under reasonable amount of time.

        • Actually, they're apparently no longer doing this (or only doing it in very rare cases)

          Kind of sucks…

        • @kudoz83: Ye, they stopped doing this recently. I had a recent order that changed in price :(

        • @kudoz83: They did it for me very recently. Not only did they refund the price difference, they went back through the history of my orders and did a price difference refund on all items I bought that dropped in price into one lump sum. I got $35 USD back that I didn't even ask for in addition to the $8 refund that I did ask for.

      • Thanks Mr Hockey.

Top 500 business in Australia by market cap pay 2%. Top 60% of that 500 pay nothing at all.

Liberals and Labour created a system where you and I pay more and more tax and the largest businesses pay almost nothing. They did this because extremely wealthy people paid them to do it.

If you vote for either of these parties you are either extremely wealthy or a fool.

        • +2

welcome to democracy where for some reason most people only vote on only 2 parties. That's just 1 extra party choice than communism.

        • @zan123:
          pretty much!

        • No other party has a chance at forming government. You need 76 seats to form government.

      • Actually msi australian warranty is very good… i emailed them and get an ra number straight away. Returned the card and got an immediate replacement on the spot in auburn.

      • In my own experience, Amazon refund you the full shipping fee you pay to send it back tracked via auspost airmail as long as you can prove it. Had one where they sent me a 360 fight stick instead of ps3, they refunded me the whole $130 cost from Sydney to us when I emailed them my receipt to return the wrong one.

        • Had one where they sent me a 360 fight stick instead of ps3

I don't know how a mistake like this ever gets made. When an item gets picked, it gets its barcode scanned and then checked against the invoice. Both would have a different barcode. It wouldn't even match.

      • Wow I never realised. Thanks for the decent write up.

    • +4

There is no such thing as local warranty, those local store is only offering manufacturer warranty. So once they took your hard earned cash they just going to tell you to f**k off if there's something wrong with the card even if its still under warranty.

      • +1

Print out the returns part of the Australian consumer law and say you will take them to the Ombudsman.

        • But then they might poke holes into your capacitors, just as getting pissed off in a restaurant will likely result in some extra saliva in your dish.

        • +1

@chyawala: Yikes. You sound like you've worked in a restaurant and are giving the inside scoop.

    • Warranties are a scam, you are covered by ACL.

Also it makes no sense to pay a large amount of money to insure yourself for a situation that is likely to never happen for every single article you buy. Better to eat the cost in the rare circumstances that something happens than pay large amounts of extra money for every transaction.

  • Amazon is same as eBay. They are focused on Customer than sellers and they can exchange products or take anl hit becaise there sales is high.

With local stores, they should replace the product within certain days from date of purchase but other than that they can only abide by manufacturer warranty, just like phone warranty from Telstra or Optus.

  • I haven't been in the market for GPU for a very long time. After a series release what are the $ trends in Australia? Is this a reasonable deal or will waiting a month or so be worth it?

  • Amazon are great - you can pre-order now and if you find it at a lower price closer to the launch date - then just cancel the order.

As long as you have Amazon selected as the seller - you can cancel at any time prior to the product getting shipped.

What I did was reserved a copy - and closer to the launch date - if I find it cheaper I will just cancel the order.

  • so its on backorder till when is the launch date i want to know

  • Just contacted the MSI Australia support.

No international warranty on imported MSI GPUs.

Definitely the cheapest that I've seen in Aus. As a side note it also seems to be one of the best AIB solutions out there. I literally just picked mine up today. Can't wait to try it out tonight! :D

    • Sure is. AIB?

      • +1

Add-In Board. Basically referring to custom PCB cards from Nvidia manufacturaring partners

        • Cheers! By "one of the best AIB solutions" are you referring to the MSI price to performance being better than say a EVGA or Gigabyte 1070?

    • How is the card?

      • The card is fine. How are you?

      • +1

Only had a little while last night to play around with it, but it's great being able to just max out settings on all my games at 1440p and still have smooth framerates. I didn't really benchmark it, but FarCry3 for instance was 30 FPS minimum maxed out at 1440p.

        • Do you have to connect both 8-pin and 6-pin power connectors? Most other 1070 only comes with 1x 8-pin connector.

Price currently showing $US599. Mustve jumped since I looked yesterday.
