    Japanese or Chinese?

    • +2

i thought panasonic = all chinese.

      • Yeah I believe all Panasonics 3rd gen and newer (Except Eneloop Pro) are now manufactured in China (they sold the Sanyo factory to Fujitsu 5+years ago)
These are 4th Gen as they are 2100 cycle

        • Kind of true we here in Australia get the Chinese eneloops in the USA they still get Japanese made eneloops and the pros are made by FDK in Japan

      • +5

        It's not true.
I went to Japan last months and as an Ozbargainer of course I bought some eneloop.
        - The batteries are all made in Japan, and the batteries + charger package will say Batteries made in Japan, Charger made in China.

        • +3

Nope Australian Panasonic Eneloops are made in China it must be a marketing thing. Except for the pros but they are re-wraps.
          https://flic.kr/p/HpcUhx

I would wait for the Ikea cells to go on sale here they are made in japan and seem to be re-wraps of the pros also (Fujitsu) 2450Mah rating they have already started selling them in Europe and the USA.

        • @aussieprepper:
Yes I know, the eneloops in Australia or in most of the Asia-Pacific countries, are made in China using Panasonic's old battery factory, and the quality is the same as ond Panasonic.
But in Japan, Europe and US, the batteries are mostly still made in Japan, - at least for now.

        • @aussieprepper: But the Costco ones, there's a chance that they're getting the Made in Japan, we will find out soon!

        • @flame21: Did you strap a bunch of Eneloops around your body and smuggle them in? lol

Its a shame seems to always be the case where australia is left out or we get sub par products at high costs.

If you don't mind me asking what price are they going for in Japan?

        • @flame21:

I Purchased a 8xAA 4xAAA + Charger pack today and the batteries are made in China.

        • @Scoobth: thanks, saved me a trip

        • @aussieprepper: Around $22.5 for 8 AA pack, with their "on sale" price plus 5% visa card discount, in the tax free shops

    • Racist!

  • Anyone have anymore info on the 'instant rebate'?

    • +1

Instant rebates are just discounts to your docket.
They are the same as when Coles or Woolies have an item on sale.

    • +4

As swimmingtoad said, since they're an American company they use coupons/rebates to offer specials. However, you don't actually need to hand over a coupon or fill out a form for the rebate. Simply, the item scans at the discounted price at the register.

      • Cheers guys.

I thought Disk Smith's closure would have been the end of Eneloop deals here.

    • +7

Some of us haven't had closure yet.

  • +7

Is Costco closing down? Dick Smith sold Eneloops… now closed. Masters sold Eneloops… is being wound down .. (see a pattern)

    • Yes. Executives who accept Chinese Eneloops can't run a business ;-)

    • -5

Costco has eneloops because thier business is closeout stock.

      • Far from it. Their model is generally exclusive stock, not anything near close outs.

what is so special about this battery and why is it so popular in ozbargain here?

    • +5

it is the ozbargain currency and it is well priced.

Frankly speaking, it an excellent rechargeable battery which maintains it's charge whereas some cheaper ones discharge within a few days.

    • +10

Hi, welcome to Ozbargain. You must be new.

    • +9

My car was broken into last weekend. Breathalyser and some other junk was stolen. But the thing that upsets me most was that it had 2 Sanyo, made in Japan, AAA batteries in it!!!

  • These days Eneloop sold locally here are the inferior versions. Unless you import from HK or Japan or US, you can't get Japanese ones.

China's ones are bad. I wouldn't touch them.

Sad to see Sanyo sold to Panasonic and they just cut costs without keeping quality

    • +2

Inferior yes, bad - depends on your expectations I guess.

Reason I asked my question above is that Costco imports a lot of products so thought there might have been some chance of the Japanese made product finding there way here. Will have to check my local warehouse but I suspect they're Chinese. Fujitsu's are about$4 a battery.

    • +2

      I wouldn't call them bad!
      They work fine.
      They hold charge good.
      They do not heat up.
But we are yet to see how they will hold up over time.

      • They don't really hold. I had the AAA Chocolate from 2 years back, they drain faster than Japanese ones where Jap ones 2 months they are probably a month or less and the Jap ones are 2 years older.

        • what voltage are they charging to? Do you have them under heavy load? That could be the problem? I have chocolate ones now i use in my lumintop tool AAA they are good. I got 1.5amps at the Tail-cap . I am really not sure how load you can put on them.

        • @aussieprepper:

It's not under heavy loader or anything. Just a electronic speaking book for baby same usage 1 month vs 2 months. I'm not convinced these China made eneloops are on par with Japanese.

        • @neonlight: Fair enough mate… I wrote this up..
          http://budgetlightforum.com/node/47059

        • @neonlight: they aren't on a par, esp as far as number of cycles go, in tests (candlepower forums). How that translates to real life is another thing

        • @Possumbly: I haven't seen a test done on that many cycles I have only seen up to 500. I think the Eneloops are good for around the same (the pros are rated at 500) standard eneloops say 1900 but that is in ideal test condition but they set no parameter for testing?
Even if you get more recharges out of the Eneloops other batteries have higher capacity so they some what make up the difference.
Not to mention you can easily ruin the Mah and charge cycles by damaging the cell.

I wonder how many Nimh actually die from standard use as in reach there max charge cycles.

  • +4

I must be the only ozbargainer who hasn't drunk the eneloop koolaid

    • Me too. No regret though. :)

    • +2

Drank heaps while DSE specials all over between 2010-2013,also were made in Japan too

  • Anyone bought to confirm place of manufacture?

  • To the people hating on the Chinese eneloops, what is the best low self discharge, rechargeable ozbargain approved AA?

    • +1

Original Japanese Eneloop from DSE specials > Hobbyking Turnigy LSDs specials > Eneloop imported from Us/Japan/Hong Kong > Eneloops Made in China 2014 onwards (Costco/Kogan DSE etc)

No official approval, my 2 cents being a member since 2009

Not hating but its China made ones are not a bargain. Go google for graphs and test results.

I speak of personal experience. The current Eneloops sold locally are inferior and its not the Eneloops they used to be

I wouldn't buy any of these knowing they ain't the same quality any more.

  • Im a Bad Bad Ozbarginer In over a year as a member I have not purchased any Enloop … please dont take my Ozbargin badge away .. I will be good and procure the sacred Enloop soon.

  • +2

To be truthful we are all stockpiling Eneloops so we can have a big Eneloop throwing fight with Broden.

  • I buy Energizer rechargeables. They're made in Japan, unlike these cheap knock-offs ; )

    • +1

I have energizer and Duracell rechargeable they are not holding their charge after 1 year and the discharge rate a far too fast.

I am not so sure where these batteries are made.
