        MLC tends to be better in terms of performance and longevity because less stacks (MLC=2 levels vs TLC=3 levels). But real world any SSD will last much longer than a HDD. A very good price for 512gb of flash storage.

          No, TLC is newer but not nescessarily better and targeted for consumer market.

          MLC (Multi Level Cell) - average performance, consumer grade NAND
          ~ 10,000 program/erase cycles per cell
          - higher density (2 or more bits per cell)
          - lower endurance limit than SLC
          - lower cost (3 times lower than SLC)
          - good fit for consumer products. Not suggested for critical applications which require frequent updates of data

          TLC (Three Level Cell) - lower performance, lowest cost NAND
          ~ 3-5,000 program/erase cycles per cell
          - highest density (3 bits per cell)
          - lower endurance limit than MLC and SLC
          - best price point (30% lower than MLC)
          - somewhat slower read and write speed than MLC
          - good fit for lower-end consumer products. Not recommended for critical applications which require frequent updating of data

          Generally, SLC drives are the fastest, most relieble and most expensive drives available, usually used in the enterprise because of their consiredably higher cost. Both MLC and TLC are widely used consumer grade memory, with MLC being better in terms of endurance.

          Notes: Larger TLC drives may yield similar longevity as smaller MLC drives, considering you can average out the wear over higher number of cells.

        • sounds about right ….. Samsung were the pioneers of TLC eg evo 850 and now call it 3D …… as they stack more than 3 layers …… for me as a consumer neither technology will wear out and I will probably upgrade to a bigger drive first eg 2 TB dives are about $500 in the US and Samsung have 2 TB consumer SSD.

          @garage sale: It get's more complicated than that I'm afraid, there are 2 different flavours of TLC, Planar and like you mentioned 3D V-Nand that are available at the moment.

          The EVO 850 uses the 3D V-NAND variant of TLC, which competes with and tends to beat MLC in terms of throughput performance but still has less write cycles/endurance. The EVO 840 and 750 range both use Planar, slower and has even less write cycles. Though the 840 is still a champ of a drive the newer 750 is more of a joke designed for system builders to save $10.

          @AEKaBeer: Well I chose this Toshiba 512GB over the cheaper Kingston UV400 480GB and the Samsung Evo 850 500GB which is about 40 bucks more.

          Hope I made the right choice!

        • @sintro: I'd pick this over the UV400 any day of the week and to save $40 vs the 850 is also worthwhile. Don't get me wrong MLC is excellent, I was just pointing out that 3D-VNAND TLC is a good option too.

      The performance looks great, quite great! I think reliability will be the hard one to test (haven't checked what controller they use for these). Toshiba's nand is generally very reliable (for obvious reasons!)…so I'm tempted to give this a go.

      Budget prices for main stream performance!

    • this one is two years old model and discontined, 850EVO still current model. 850EVO is much faster for writing but for consumer and workstation not much different. For quality, seem not bad on Amazon feed back, but 850EVO should be better, as none failing for me over 100 units

        Amazon feedback often disagrees with the results of testing by consumer organisations such as Choice. Worse than random chance, the Amazon reviews actually tend to give high marks to low quality products and vice versa.

        Like you might expect from a bunch of clueless people who bought the product yesterday ;)

        I would suggest avoiding them in favour of something else where possible.

        • It's very valuable data just need to analyse then picked the valid one, if says no one will lied, more feed back will be more actually. It's much better than Backblaze's so called professional data, their first report just a joke.

    • Looks like the toshiba is a little slower than the 840 evo, 850 evo is a bit of a jump up over this.

      However, the extra $50 of the 850 evo makes the toshiba a very good deal

      • An SSD is only as good as its weakest link (NAND grade, controller used etc). Keen to see some benchmarks on it for smaller files and differing workloads rather then just flat file copies.

  • I think Samsung evo is TLC while this one is MLC which is better per se

    • lots of manufacturers are moving to tlc because as the tracks get smaller, the amount of time the band retails information is shortened, and TLC allows then to use larger tracks hence how Samsung use TLC but have MLC data retention durability. Intel and crucial have a whole new technology that lasts even longer then TLC and MLC …. very few people will wear out this stuff before upgrading to new technology.

      I'm quite certain that a 2010 Macbook Pro had an option to have a SSD. I mean there should be a mSATA port which you can connect to SSD.

  • I need a big ssd and this one seems to fit the bill. My only gripe is that none of the big sites have reviewed one so it might be rubbish.

    The reviews I have read look promising but maybe the 850 evo is a safer bet. Is $20 really worth the additional headache of buying a dud?

    • As far as I know, this is basically a rebranded OCZ SSD. Toshiba acquired OCZ a few years back and their Barefoot controller design team altogether. I know some OCZ SSDs had a few problems, but now people hardly ever complain about Toshiba(OCZ)'s SSD. I reckon this SSD should be fine.

  • The Samsung 850 Pro seems to have faster RW speeds, just.
    But Pro is a lot more expensive.
    OCZ were pretty bad so not sure if they work on this from the ground up?

  • Well I've ordered one for my laptop. I don't expect blistering speeds etc, but it'll beat the current HDD in there!

  • I am no expert in these things, but I noticed that these drive 9.5mm in height, the drive in my lenovo E460 is 7.2mm does this mean it would not fit in my computer? I noticed the samsung 850 evo is 7mm in height.

    • You dont have to be an expert to know that 9.5mm drive dont fit in 7.2mm space but as they say. Sledgehammer does wonders. 😁

    • Should be alright for loading games and such. I don't think you need bleeding edge performance unless you only want to see very fast installation times. ;-)

      • Awesome! Haha, i'm playing Total War: Warhammer at the moment and the loading time between battles and the campaign map takes a while…
        So it sounds like this would help out a lot.

        • I ended up not getting anything as I need a micro SD card more. I saw the 850 EVO price at MSY and it is only $20 difference so I thought I'll hold. Hope you bought yours!
