  • Excellent Schweppes dry ginger ale is half price at Coles this week.

    • +9

But these are sipping whiskeys. I suppose you might as well mix with the good stuff when it's this cheap, but it is a sacrilege nonetheless :P

      • +13

If you're drinking someone else's Whisky without caring about the quality, it's sacrilege. If it's your own then don't let other people tell you how to enjoy your drink. Sure try it neat, with a drop of water, or over ice but at the end of the day if you like a scotch with ginger beer and sunkist then who cares what other people think. (this is coming from a huge Whisky snob that's about to have a Glenmorangie Signet)

        • +26

A guest once wanted to drink my 18-year old glenmorangie with coke … I haven't spoke to him since.

        • +2

          Signet is amazing.

        • -3

          @sp00ker:
but it tastes amazing with coke…

        • +3

It's true, we live in a free country and everyone has the right to hold incorrect opinions.

I think the main problem with people who drink expensive whisky (typically Johnnie blue) mixed with sodapop, is that the taste is so masked that I doubt they'd be able to tell the difference if i poured the bottle out and replaced it with something much cheaper. And that leads me to think they're paying hundreds of dollars mainly to be seen drinking a bottle with that label on it (which I reckon is true for most of the Johnnie Blue market, regardless of how they drink it).. Ofcourse people are free to pay money for branding, but I reserve the right to mock them for it.

        • +3

@simulacrum: Agreed Johnnie Blue isn't worth it, I've heard of people mixing soda water with $3500 cognac (Richard Hennessy) but clearly some people don't like the taste but enjoy the social status.
While I've had others let me know that Johnnie Red is ruined by Coke because it's so smooth and enjoyable.

Both of these types of people have something in common, the liquid hardly touches the sides.
If they do it to my Whisky I like to offer them a very highly rated Whisky neat, Ardbeg and watch them cringe with the peatiness.

        • +3

@rekabkram: Love Ardbeg! The 10 year old is probably my favourite standard bottling, bottom of the range single malt.. absolutely perfect for Melbourne's weather at the moment.

Have you tried any of the Octomores?

        • +1

@simulacrum: The most recent Octomore I've tried was 7.2 I was slightly underwhelmed, not by the peat but by the maturity of the Whisky I wasn't at all surprised when I learned that it was only aged 5 years as it's got an underdeveloped body hiden under layers of peat (in my opinion of course). I think Octomore is over peated and personally prefer the Port Charlotte from Bruichladdich (sorry if that's misspelt) although Ardbeg 10YO is my favourite Islay malt a part of that comes down to value for money.

The laddie would have to be my favourite unpeated Islay.

        • @dasher86:

Unless you mean a line of coke … I'm going to say you're being facetious

      • Nah. Sipping whiskey is at least $50. :p

        • RRP or OzBargain? ;-)

  • I picked up 2x Dalwhinnie and 1x Glenfiddich last week :)
Also, a 1L Grants to have with coke ($40, plus $10 6 pack of cider, less $10 from voucher).

  • keen for my girlfriend (who i love very much) to drink this with vanilla coke

  • Dalwhinnie 15 is a great drop even at the 70/80 price range. Fiddich 12 isn't, unfortunately, though the Glenfiddich 14 Rich Oak is worth every dollar.

    • What don't you like about Fiddich 12? For me the finish is the biggest downfall (short and dry), but it isn't bad overall, has that unique pear flavour I haven't found in other whiskeys, and a white pepper flavour also, so it is unique albeit not very complex or satisfying for me. Still a good whiskey in my book, not one to recommend to others as a standout, but just to have in your bar just because you can :) I would take Glen Grant 10 over it.

      • Fiddich at $50 is a good drink at $45 it's a bargain……. hope Dan's match it ……no first choice near me.

  • Can u use this voucher more than once?

    • Yes, although on the voucher it says to be only used once per person. But it's written in very fine print, quite easy to be "misread", if you get my drift ;)

  • What would you recommend as a gift for someone who's never had a single malt before but enjoys blended whiskys?

    • Dalwhinnie is pretty very to drink. I think Dalwhinnie, Old Pultney, Glenmorangie and Glen Elgin are my go-to introductory single malts.

  • +1

Cragganmore 12 is $65 at dans not $75

    • It's $75 online for dans. Do you mean in-store price is different?

  • I've just checked the voucher I received when I signed up and the barcode is not unique.

It also states that it must be used with 14 days of receiving it, but there is no date on it, nor expiry date written on it.

I'm going to hit 1st Choice tomorrow. Pity there's only 1 near me in Bentleigh, not too sure how I'm going to use the voucher a few times.

I got Dalwhinnie, Ardbeg and Glen Grant during the 20% off sale a few weeks ago, already had 2 x JW Black and 2 x JW Green from Dans deal in May….coupled with the Hungry Jacks vouchers today…..I don't think I need to worry about my lack of superannuation. :(

  • These have got to be well and truly past their use-by dates… :)

  • This went up on another thread on 15th and it says 14 days, so it should be good until the 29th. I used it yesterday.

  • I like peaty stuff like Lagavulin 16, but I'm open to somehting a bit smoother especially if it has oak tastes. Any recommendations for me in this batch?

    • +2

There's only a handful of running distilleries on Islay:

Ardbeg, Bowmore, Bruichladdich, Bunnahabhain, Caol Ila, Kilchoman, Lagavulin, Laphroaig

You'll probably like most of their stuff.. watch out a lot of Bruichladdich/Port Charlotte releases aren't peated.

If you're trying to branch out from peated stuff, I'd say start with something that's heavily sherried.. maybe something from Springbank or an indie bottling of Mortlach.

As for the deal.. I didn't look through the website but I suspect you'll probably find Dalwhinnie a bit mild for your palate. It's a good one to have on hand for guests.. especially if you're trying to introduce someone to whisky. Also kind of easy to drink in summer.

Cragganmore is a little more interesting.. think it's spent a little more time in sherry, so there's a little more complexity and fruit. It's not a bad one to check out tbh.

      • Cheers, might check out the Cragganmore thanks for the advice!

  • Just got the Dalwhinnie from North Rocks, cheers for the post! Now I have something to go with the Game of Throne season finale! 😁

  • I've tried applying code '9313938903017' but it's not working. Am I missing something?

  • This is good…. last malt was glenmorangie at liquorland $35 (older style bottle :))

Can i get a recommendation? glenmorangie was awesome, i also like the fiddich…

    I don't think peaty is good….

    • hibiki - it's a Japanese blend. I normally don't go for Japanese whiskey's or blends … but it's definitely worth a try.

      • if you can find it anymore…

    • Glenmorangie is a delicate Highland malt. I think you'll find the Dalwhinnie to your liking.

  • The only mentioned whiskey that is on special currently is the Glen Grant 10YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky $46 with voucher.
Proces have increased on the others.

  • Is this voucher still working?

If so price match Dan's Lagavulin 16 $84 + voucher = $74 which is about as cheap as I've ever seen it.

    • I bought the Lagavulin 16 last week for $78, looks like price went a bit lower now.

      • $78 is a good deal… $74 even better!

If anyone can verify the voucher still works, I might have to jump.

        • Any update if the voucher still works ?

        • @regenade:
Not sure… I was hoping some enterprising bargaineer would step up!

        • +1

          @Poimandres:

Just used one. Printed it out though. I didn't want to risk showing the generic URL on my phone. The bar code didn't drop the price on the register so he put it through manually.

  • Went to first choice jandakot. They told me this was deleted but I managed to find it hiding at the back. Killer!

  • Guys this deal is still going on but with new drinks, Russel's Reserve 10 year is $46, Balvenie 12 year Double wood is $72. I'm not sure how to revise deal, seems that option has gone now.
