Experienced Mattress Buyers - Where to Get and What to Get a Super-king Size?

Calling on all Experienced Mattress Buyers:

My wife and I have always told ourselves that we need to invest in decent mattress ASAP. It is a worthy investment and returns value right away.
Yet the lofty price tags—-not really just because they are expensive— but the fact there may be made up of sheer profits, puts us off.

Would like to hear from all the experienced OZB where to and what to get for decent mattress. No fixed budget as long as they really worth the price and do last.

UPDATE 8/7/16—-should have mentioned we are after a SUPER-KING size (203x203) mattress, a lot of the places mentioned dont stock this size..

Many thanks!

Get a Sealy posturepeadic. We got ours last year from myer but wait until they are 40-50% off. We got a $4500 ensemble for about $2200

    • was considering Sealy but reviews say they are prone to sagging. hows yours?

      • it is only a year old and is ok so far.

        • Mine is about 5 years old and still going strong.

    • Mines almost 10years and going strong but will be looking for a replacement soon and relagate it to the guest room.
What i like about the sealy is the unicase sides, they dont sag when you are sleeping on the edges or when you are getting up

  • +1

If Wife said she need a decent mattress, get tempur mattress, they are good.
    My only minor negative would be;
    Can get bit warm.
    Price point.

As a OZB look for deals, ie two free pillows or ensemble.

Had a thorough look and now looking at the online retailers mentioned in the article, Ecosa and Greywing.
They all sell this kind of gel-memoryfoam compressed mattresses. Easy to ship, but any good though?

      • +1

To be honest, your best bet is to try them all.

I spent about a whole hour comparing all the mattresses at Super Amart. And the most comfortable for me was one that costed around $1,200. But a close second mattress costed around $700, so I chose the latter. And there were mattresses selling for $3,000 and up, and I honestly can tell you they were tish.

So it's 2 years with my "cheap" mattress and I'm nothing but happy with it.
Very firm. Very soft. No sagging.

I wished I could flip it, I can't, so that I can even out its wear/bumps over the long haul.
But honestly, I don't think its such a big problem because by the time it gets bad… there will be an equivalent bed at an equivalent price!

    • Article conveniently glosses over the costs of R&D, shipping, warehousing, floorspace, staff wages etc and also seems to ignore that retailers/wholesalers/manufacturers have a right to earn money on what they do.

      • +3

I don't think it does, in any instance doesn't mean you have to pay more for a bed to factor that in, I think it points out what the competition can do without all the overheads.

  • +1

I got a $150 king bed base and a $1000 koala matteress and it is awesome!!

    • +1

how long have you had it and Is this true in your case?

      Side supports
All these mattresses sag at the edges and collapse as there is no support at the ages and thus reduced sleeping surface. The Koala does have a nice sensation but invariably the whole thing feels very soft especially the bottom support layer (core). I know they test these things using a machine to roll over, but whether they will stand the test of time we'll see.

      • Both my wife and I like firm beds and we both love the bed. The edges are typically softer than your spring as they have a box structure on the edges, but I can still sleep straight to the edge (as happens with my bed hogging wife).

It has a good warranty and a 120 day sleep gurantee to test it out. We sleep on backs, sides and tummy and the matteress is good for all positions. I'm a bigger guy and it does well with weight and height.

We don't find it hot to leep or nor were there any fumes from new to this day.

We tested beds and think it would be comparable to a $3k plus matteress, even better than the Tempur. See how we feel after 5 years on it.

        • How long have you had it for?

        • @cosmic:

Been about 6 months now I think.

    • Where did you get the base from?

      • +1

        Tommy Swisse

        • Perfect, thank you.

Did the Koala people take your old mattress away for you?

        • @BaryGusey:

No, I didn't want them to. Don't think they do it. Throw it up on Gumtree for free, someone took mine away another time within an hour.

        • Can you please paste link which model is it. they have couple

    Can also recommend Koala Mattress
best mattress i have EVER slept on and this includes some pretty high end and high prices mattress

they have a 30 day sleep guarantee too.. check them out

    • was about to buy Ecosa as only they have superking size. then stumble across this from a whirlpool thread (https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2473017)..

      VOC's, toxic vapours etc.
Regardless of what any manufacturers claims, having a mattress that contains 4-6 times more foam than a normal mattress means you are exposed to a greater amount of "foam fumes". If you think the smell has gone, press into the mattress and take a whiff, the vapours underneath the top layer will 'seep' out. Latex releases much less fumes over a period of time, whereas normal PU foam (polyurethane etc) foams, regardless of how they are made, release smells through the life of the product. The K4 layer does have the typical chemical foam smell and the initial smell gets less but is consistent throughout the whole product. Same for the Greywing but the latex layer masks the smells from the foam below. That said, the point is you would expose yourself to less foam vapours (VOCs / off-gassing) with a normal mattress as there is considerably less foam and chemicals used on the products, normally only 1-2 inches instead of 8-10 inches found in these mattresses in a box.

      • +1

Don't bother with the Ecosa; I like a firm mattress, but it is very, very firm. We were instructed to donate it to the Salvos and got a full refund from Ecosa without any trouble. The Ecosa smelt very chemically for a week or so, but it subsided.

We now have a Koala and it is great. No chemical smell like the Ecosa and supremely comfortable.

I would exhaust all of the free trial options before buying a traditional, non-returnable mattress from your typical bed shop.

        • Interesting - the most common criticism I've read for Koala is that it's too soft, but you say you like firm mattresses? How long have you had the Koala for? I've also heard from a (small-framed) friend who said their Koala was fantastic initially, but got way too soft over time.

        • @cosmic: Maybe I've become soft over time. The Ecosa was like sleeping on long pile carpet with floorboards underneath; didn't conform to my body at all and sleeping on my side was painful.

I think we're almost at the end of our free trial with the Koala, so 3 months in and its still good; though it's by no means a long test.

Our last mattress was a pocket sprung Sultan from Ikea; over a 3 year period it became deformed at the sides and developed ass grooves, even with regular rotation.

My overall point was that one should take the opportunity to use the free trials offered by these companies, rather than a bricks and mortar that won't provide a refund or exchange.

        • @Master Baiter: Thanks for your feedback. I agree with your overall point; we're waiting for our first one of these to arrive. (Coincidentally our current mattress is also a Sultan, though I've put up with it for much longer.)

      • +1

Firstly given the person commenting stated up front he worked for snooze i would take what he said with a grain of salt, (the people at every mattress shop we went too had reasons why i should not buy a koala or the like)

in fact his whole comment thread (its quite long) is a typical this is "why what i am selling is better" a lot of his facts are wrong too.

"I heard the company making it for Koala is owned by an Indian conglomerate": WRONG made in Sydney in a factory near Bondi. Watched an interview with them on a Sunday morning program (how i found out about them) and saw the plant where there mattresses are manufactured

His whole post screams of a salesman desperate to prevent people paying a reasonable price for a decent product.

I am a complete convert to koala and the a lot of his so called "VCOS" claims dont hold weight either, he is off his tree if he thinks the Australian Givernment would allow such a product to be sold in Oz otherwise, given the rules regarding such things are pretty strict. Mattresses sold in Austrlaia are permitted 0 yes 0 toxic fumes to escape from the mattress.

TLDR: Blah Blah.. buy from a store, why save money cause then i don't get commission

        • I think he was talking about where the foam was manufactured. Are Koala manufacturing the foam or just putting the bed together?

    • +5

Have any of you seen this in relation to Koala on the product review site (https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2473017):
When reading the new reviews in a bit more detail I came across the review below:

"Good mattress, good delivery time, disappointed at their review policy
I've only had this mattress for about 4 days so I'll have to come back and update this review at a later point once I've tried it out more.
What disappointed me is that I recently received an email from the CEO with a link to this website, asking me to post an "Awesome Review" and promising a $25 Cole's gift card in return
In summary: I think this is a pretty nice mattress, but take many of the “Awesome Reviews" with a grain of salt, as some of them may be paid for"

I don’t know what you guys think about this, but it made me fairly suspicious that all of these new reviews had been in some way paid for – specifically as a result of the CEO of Koala beds specifically offering a $25 Cole’s gift card for an “Awesome review”.

      • They have stopped offering gift cards for an 'awesome review'. To be fair, people have said that they were given the gift card even if their review was unfavourable. I can see why a new company would like to spread the word out there that their product is available on the market, how often do people think about giving reviews for good stuff they have used.

I personally have bought a Koala mattress from March, and have not been offered a gift card, was just given a referral link for that gives people $75 off and me $50? but havent thought of using it as of yet.

I also love my Koala. it is quite soft and plushy but it is true that it makes it difficult to get out of bed in the mornings as you just dont want to leave.

        • My electric blanket is like that in this weather.

The guy that wrote that was peeved product review was allowing it and I agree with him. It has spoiled my opinion of PR.

From the sounds of it, they wanted the reviews quickly and a foam mattress is going to take some time to "bed" in. Be interested to know what it's like a year from now.

        • do you want to gives your referral of $75 so both of us can received $75, i thinking to convert it to koala in next couple of days

        • @andyken: sure :) ill try send you a message through ozbargain (never done it before) as i need your email to send it to you

  • Make sure it is a mattress which can be turned over as it extends the life of the mattress.

    • +3

Mattresses these days are designed to NOT be flipped
To say it extends the life of the mattress is also a myth.

the springs are designed to be used on one side
hence why the manufacturers use a lesser grade material on one side (as in no topper) or they put a massive label at bottom to motivate you to NOT sleep on that side.

  • +3

I got a Sealy Posturepedic a year ago but I have to say I'm disappointed. It's comfortable but after 6 months it was already sagging badly in the middle. Apparently there's a 7 year warranty/guarantee which covers a certain amount of sag but I haven't tried claiming yet.

    • This is my experience as well. My husband's side sagged really bad. Mine wasn't so much. I didn't even realise it sagged til I slept on his side. It's like there was a hole in the bed.

Bought a king size bed from another brand. Still going strong in its fifth year. Didn't sag even when I was pregnant.

      • And which brand is this other brand that's still going strong after 5 years?

    • +7

If only my lady came with a 7 year warranty against sagging

      • +1

I found out that the warranty only covers sagging of 32mm or more.

    • +1

do you rotate the mattress monthly or as suggested by the manufacturers? It shouldn't happen if you're diligent in the rotation.

  • +2

If you like a firm mattress, try an Ikea one. Friends who like really firm mattresses rave about them (I like soft, and have one from a local maker in ACT).

    • I got one, but it sagged after a while.
      Not recommended in my opinion.

    • Seems to be a trend with Ikea furniture. My friends Ikea couch feels like sitting on a wooden box.

    • I sleep on a real thin Ikea mattress that is quite firm and I actually love it. Had it for 2 years and no sagging that I have noticed.

  • I'm now a convert to buying a mattress online. Why? There's at least 4 different companies now that offer you a 90-100 day trial for your mattress, and give you a FULL REFUND and FREE PICKUP should you not like the mattress. Try doing that with a normal mattress store! You will have the hardest time ever trying to return a mattress that is crap. The thought of going into a room full of mattresses and trying several for 5 minutes and spending $$$$ on one that I have no idea will be any good for me, gives me the heeby jeebies! I refuse to do it!
I tried Greywing but it was too firm for me. Koala didn't have a showroom in Vic at the time so I went with Sleeping Duck. Ozmattress doesn't do a full refund but can change the mattress if you want. Ergoflex is just as good as the more expensive Tempur if you prefer full memory foam. Can I just say I LOVE SLEEPING DUCK. Firm and supportive but like sleeping on a cloud still not a concrete floor. It has layers you can swap out to change the firmness if you want which they provided FOR FREE. The service was fantastic. If I didn't like it they would have given me a full refund, but I didn't want to.

    • I wonder what they do with the returned mattress? It would be kinda gross if they resold them.

Edit: Just read the faqs and they don't resell they either donate to charity or recycle parts into things like carpet underlay.

      • Donate it. It comes flatpacked and rolled up.. it would be very hard to repack a used mattress.

  • The problem is how to get free but accurate and professional advice/analysis of what type of mattress are suitable for our body?

I belive depending on your body and bone and sleeping habit and structures some people might need firm some soft etc etc so it is hard to ask opinion forum. Am I right?

  • +1

I don't have an opinion of where to buy, but I can say don't go to snooze highpoint if ur in Vic. I bought mine there, and I still get annoyed when I think about it.

  • +2

Whatever you do, avoid OMF (Original Mattress Factory).

We bought a $1500 mattress there, because it felt very comfortable. But I sometimes sit up in bed during the day with my laptop/phone. After just a couple of years my side of the bed has sunk down (I weigh about 70kgs, so about no more than half of what any quality mattress should be built to take at a minimum).

Cheap garbage sold for a high price.

    • I bought a OMF mattress ($1.7'ishK Queen), I wouldn't recommend it. They were friendly and spent lots of time with us but I just don't find the bed we got comfy but it was the most comfy mattress they had.

I would test out one of those online stores, nothing to lose.

  • +1

Try a proper full latex mattress, we just love ours. We have also "converted" friends to them when they stay overnight and use the first one we purchased.

Slight negatives … Expensive so shop around, can be a bit warmer in hot weather, you sink in more with them, tend to take your shape so depending on unit consider that aspect. However would never return to normal spring mattresse's!!.

    • Full latex mattress is definitely the way to go, although expensive, you only need to buy the top mattress, and put it on your old bed base. They last 20 years, are super comfortable, no nasty outgassing (except for my partner), and no metal wires that attract EMF. You'll have a healthier night sleep, and be super comfortable. My guest bed is also latex and guests don't wanna leave :-(

Beware memory foam, it is chemical based, it does outgass, and is not healthy for you. Full latex is all natural, hence the expense.

We actually bought our latex mattress on Gumtree just to try latex out before we bought a new one. But the 2nd hand one was spotless and no body indents, so I just ran the wet/dry vac over it and we've never looked back. BEST decision ever!!

      • +1

Pay no heed to any product advertising that suggests that one particular mattress is more 'natural' than another or that one particular mattress will protect you from rogue EMFs that are out to get you.

  • +3

Was gonna pay $1k but got an Ikea compressed one for $300 or so a year ago. Has been very good and don't regret the purchase.

  • +1

Freakonomics did a good podcast on mattresses and profit margins about a month ago. They said most mattress makers have huge margins and will make a range of mattresses from good to bad so going by brand is tough. They vary the model names by a couple of letters to prevent comparison shopping. I have a firm ikea mattress it is 5 years old and does not sag. I got it because a choice consumer satisfaction survey said ikea was good.

  • Serenity bedding make decent mattresses, I preferred them over forty winks or various other common retailers and the price was much more reasonable. They are probably not quite as high quality as the better sealy mattresses but not as expensive and apparently still made in Australia.

https://www.sleepingduck.com/au/ is one of the many online stores you could try for the free trial system.

  • +3

Try Ergoflex, its similar with Tempur but with a lot lower price, they currently have a sale with up to 40% of the RRP. Its very firm with a memory foam.
    http://www.ergoflex.com.au/memoryfoammattress/memory-foam-ma…
The King size is currently at 1199 AUD

    • I have the Ergoflex. It's always on sale.

You're right it's quite firm. We put a mattress topper on top and it's much better - it's pillow soft on top and but firm and molds to your shape underneath that.

    • I have one, love it. It's firm initially but soft as you sink into it. The only downside is that it (the mattress) gets really hot in summer.

    • The Ergoflex wasn't firm enough for me. I regretted buying a mattress online without trying it. Couldn't try it out I'm in WA.

  • Mattresses have a huge profit margin built into them. I wouldn't pay anymore than 50% of retail price.

  • Try a waterbed, once you get used to it you never go back to ordinary mattress again. I've had mine for about eight years now. Everyone loves it and I wake up so refreshed each morning.

    • Not sure why you were negged, I had a waterbed as a kid and loved it, must admit though I havent had one since I left home many many years ago

    • any maintenance ?

      any particular seller ?

  • We got a Sleep Republic mattress a few weeks ago and we love it. Very supportive and feels bigger than it is as the edges don't sag (compared to our previous mattress). Comes with 100 night trial, so you can try before committing to it. Best part, no smell. Good luck! :-)

  • My wife and I went to a Snooze and tried their bed simulator. It matched us up pretty well with the right kind of bed. I then used that info and tested out a bunch of other beds at different stores.

We ended up with a Snooze bed (I don't remember the brand) but it was one with coil springs. Best bed I've ever slept on. But the lesson was that we took our time and didn't feel pressured to buy. If you have to, bring your own pillows.

My Wife and I ordered a King Size Ergoflex Memory Foam Mattress about two weeks ago and are expecting it to arrive tomorrow. Delay was due to stock running out because of sale. Bought it from their website,

    http://www.ergoflex.com.au/memoryfoammattress/memory-foam-ma…

Currently have a 50% off sale, and if you use the Coupon code "SLEEP" you will also get free shipping saving you another $70 odd.

they have a 30 day money back guarantee if you are not satisfied, and include a 10 year warranty.

Bought it on a whim as we really needed a new mattress but have never tried it, but based on rave reviews, everyone claims they are on par with the Tempura matresses but at a fraction of the cost.

i did do a fair amount of research into memory foam mattresses, and discovered they dont like liquid, whether it be sweat, water, soft drink, etc…, so i looked around and found these bamboo mattress toppers that are so thin that it will not affect the feel of the matress, feels excellent (even though most people would put a sheet on them anyway). Took 2 days to arrive.

If you want a link to the matress protector:

    https://www.the-pillow.com.au/pillow-slips-covers/mattress_c…

    • @Zetrox2k Where do you get the King Base from?

      • My dad is a cabinet maker, specializing in hardwoods/jarrah beds, desks, dining tables, tv units (inc lowlines), as well as Kitchens :)
He made my queen size bed, and now he'll be making my king size.

The look is amazing but damn its heavy…

        • +2

Lucky you, thats the best bargain of the day!

    • The code didn't work for me.

      • damn sorry! i got that code from an OZB post that was supposed to have expired 2-3 months ago, and tried it on a whim a week and a half ago and it worked.

also FYI had my matress delivered yesterday, unpacked it let it rise for about 3 hours or so and man…. best nights sleep ive had in a long time.

        • Really ?
          My king size arrived yesterday.
I lasted till around 1am this morning, still hadn't slept so ended up on my old mattress on the floor. It's very very firm.
Wife said she slept ok, ditched the Ergo pillow half way through the night and it smells pretty bad to but I'm sure that will go.
I'm going to give it till Monday and if I still can't sleep on it it's going back.
Only problem is apparently it needs to be sent back in a bag they supply and will cost approx $160-$200 to send back.

        • @Stevetriv: They definitely arent for everyone; people either love them or hate them. wasnt aware you had to pay return fees; will update my post so people dont miss it…

but yeah anyone thinking about a memory foam mattress should definitely visit a harvey norman or Snooze store and try it first. The feel of the Tempura classic is almost identical actually.

the dangers of online bargain hunting i suppose :/

        • @Zetrox2k: how true !!
Anyway I'll give it a few more nights and see if we get use to it.

  • I have a really old AH Beard which is great. They used to be a genuinely good Australian manufacturer but I could NOT recommend today.
Have been buying second hand mattresses this year to try and find one that's ok. Let someone else pay first and I get expensive stuff for a pittance. Have been through about 6 of them. Have had no luck. Tried a newer AH Beard memory foam gel mattress and it belonged in the bin. It literally was like marshmallow on one side of the bed - mattress looked like new and was a couple of years old. No mattress should end up like this.

Latex & memory foam mattresses - seem to be ok for one person but two people will eventually make mountains and lumps. It seems the heavier you are, the more it will move, the bigger the mountains that will form and the ridge in the middle. If you're hot and heavy, you're going to sink into it further and seemingly destroy the structure. I have an impression that not all latex/memory foam is the same and the manufacturer has no quality control on where they are getting it from. We have a good latex one and a subtly lumpy one - but the lumpy one is really nice if you're sleeping alone. The good one is WAY too hot in summer. We have one with a huge memory foam top. Initially it appeared so comfy and many people that sleep in it, say it's the best bed they've slept in … but it's too soft and makes my back ache and gives me a headache.

All these mattresses come with 10 year (or so) guarantees but note: you will never be able to claim on that guarantee. Even if you were to sleep in one, and people do, the one they sell you won't be the same. Read some reviews on ones you might like. I've not seen one mattress that people haven't had lumpy, collapsing problems with and price makes NO difference … well it does, in the sense that you're throwing more money down the toilet. Read about people trying to claim this guarantee back.

We have a Coconut Coir Memory Foam Mattress. Ok if you like firmish and hasn't collapsed at all. Too firm for me. I'd recommend that for firmish. Mine was free but you can find them at graysonline. Bloody heavy.

The other thing you need to note is that many mattresses are the same - ie., they are made by the same place and 'badged' with different names, mutton dressed as lamb. There is no way you can tell this. Sealy for instance has a terrible name today and I guess this is why.

Anyway, overall, I'm really disappointed in the choices available and have given up my search. It seems to be a lottery where you may get a good one on a good day and that's it. The best option I feel is to find an older style spring mattress with old fashioned pillow top that's been used as a spare bed only … but for now … i've run out of beds.

Lucky I still have my original AH from 10 years ago and it's the most comfy thing i've ever had. When you consider that most of these modern mattresses are made of some kind of foam, and that foam will by nature compress over time, you have to wonder if this style of mattress actually has any real future next to the old springs and pillow tops that seem to last for YEARS - well, if you don't weigh an excessive amount :)

  • +1

It's really best to go in and try out mattresses for yourself. I've recently had to do this and learned quite a lot in the process. I have a bad back so a firm pocket Spring bed with a pillow top was perfect for me.

The next step up (if I wasn't on budget) was a memory foam mattress. They were amazing, felt like I could fall asleep on the spot and no chance of sagging either.

My advice though, avoid the conventional springs and stick with pocket springs with memory foam edges. Make sure to rotate the bed every month as well. Alernatuvely you can just get a memory foam mattress :)

  • Ordered a Sleepmaker mattress when there were 40-50% off, in myer.

Sadly SM couldn't get the order right. First mattress was Firm not plush, then the second mattress was plush but the wrong size.
Finally I got the correct mattress, but it doesn't feel like it. It feels more semi-firm than Plush, especially compared to the second mattress they sent.

My parents though had it right the first time, and still happy with it. So i guess it's with chance.

  • I tried the Snooze bed match system, then tried a few mattresses around its suggestions. They were all spot on! It was my first real mattress purchase, and I'd always been attracted to the idea of a soft plush mattress.. Turns out I find them uncomfortable, and prefer firm mattresses but with a pillow top which makes it feel a bit softer and more luxurious. It was $1.5k and I still sigh happily every time I lay down!

  • It will be interesting to see how these newer foam mattresses are going after a period of time. I suspect they will collapse or compress as this is just the natural state of using foam.

I can't beleive the companies pay for reviews on product review and product review doesn't think this is a problem.

  • -1

    I got one from http://www.zzzatelier.com.au/
Very happy with the mattress. Great quality. Comparable to $3-4000 mattresses at the retailers.
They've posted on Ozb before but their ebay outlet store is usually cheaper than the deals on their main site.

  • I bought a Snooze bed in the sale. It seemed good value and I was great at first, but 12 months later it is beginning to sag where we sleep.
I regret to say I have never had a great experience with any bed and would love to hear from anyone who has had a mattress for 5+ years that is still not sagging or hasn't got collapsed walls.

I got a mattress this year from ozmattres. Good reviews on whirlpool and affordable. I got soft supra and I get the best sleeps.

    100 day exchange is avaliable.

    • I also bought an OzMattress about a year ago — I went for the Grand Master. The whirlpool forum really sold it for me. It's comfy as (profanity), I love it.

We got a grandmaster 19 months ago, and it's getting indents on each side and it is now causing back pain for us particularly on one side of the bed. It was great for the first 12 to 14 months, and yes we do rotate it. I too read the whirlpool thread, which is why we bought it. Currently in the process of contacting the manufacturer to see if anything can be done, I still need to send them photos - which is hard as it looks fine, but it has just become very uncomfortable.

WOW I thought we were the only ones with this situation !!!

We had our Ozmattress Grand Master for exactly 14 months and we currently both wake up with lower back pain even though we haven't changed any habits, such a shame because it used to be really comfortable, now can't recommend it due to this situation. We rotate it often but this doesn't seem to alleviate the issue.

please update me on the situation.

  • ~3 weeks back we purchased a KS chiro mattress from Sleepys. http://www.sleepys.com.au. Happy with the service and the price. e.g. http://www.sleepys.com.au/mattresses/chiro-inspiration-conto… for ~$3200. There's room to deal on their list price.

Sleepy's also do a 60 day mattress return guarantee - as long as you sleep on a mattress protector.

Managed to get some free pillows (although we paid for gel-filled latex upgrades, to help with summer heat) and a free mattress protector.

They took the time to "fit us" on about 6 different mattresses - rather than others where they basically said "lie down and let us know what you like"

One thing they said to look out for was curvature of spine when lying on your side.

Prior to this, we had another Sealy mattress for with a "latex pillow top". That lasted 10 years, three kids and lots of practice.

    I would recommend getting a Tempur http://au.tempur.com/about-tempur.html

I bought mine 10 years ago and it is absolutely just as good as the day I got it. cost a fortune but well worth it, an investment I've never once regretted!

go to harvey norman or domayne and try them out you wont be disappointed.

I would try to buy it when they have their 40 or 50% off sales couple of times a year. ( I Didnt do this and paid full price but even at RRP I have no regrets)

  • I use tempur on all my beds. When I was in Australia I buy ergoflex as cheaper alternatives. The only matrasses I will buy especially as side sleeper. I helps my back pain significantly and helps me to sleep better

  • Get the firmest base you can find (like a wooden board) with a thin but dense comfort layer. (asian style mattress). Not pocket sprung… It will inevitably sag badly because a single spring is weaker than wound coils. If its super firm you wont get partner disruption. It will be better for your back, you will sleep better and it will last longer. Better sex too.

  • A good mattress is worth every single penny.

I was literally waking up of a morning with every single bone in my body aching. When I went to my doctor he asked about my bed. It was my ex-fiances and over 20 years old.

I paid $75 my gp to have be told get a new bed.

I paid $3500 and haven't looked back. No more waking up feeling like a 90 year old geriatric.

However, I caution against buying the pillow top mattress. I find them stiflingly hot in summer, to the point that I almost can't sleep in mine.

Where do you live that you can't see a doctor bulk billed?

      • +2

What country are you living in?

        • +2

          Australia.

I have a bulk billing doctor for simple stuff anything I consider remotely seriously I have a doctor that I pay full whack to.

Generally speaking you pay for what you get.

Frankly, bulked billed equals being shuffled in / out ASAP.

  • Last time I bought a mattress was when Good Guys decided to stop selling mattresses so they discounted all matresses 40%-60%. Of the half dozen that suited my preference I chose the one with the longest warranty.

Am not sure if this it right but I use the warranty as a gauge of how long the mattress should last before it starts sagging. Most of the branded mattresses should have 24 months or more of warranty. If you are worried about value then consider choosing one with the warranty that suits.
