Entertainment Solutions for My Bedroom with a 55" TV Mounted on The Wall

Hi Guys,

I need some advice/help.

I'm not overly tech savvy. I'm not into games. And to be quite frank I don't watch a LOT of movies.

Though, thanks to Ozb Deals, I purchased a 55" TV from Dick Smith closing down sales…for no real reason.

It's mounted on my wall. Since i've got a TV, I thought I may as well, spend a bit of money and make it into a small entertainment hub.

The inbuilt speakers of the TV are fine. But I would like something to connect my laptop/Phone to as well (via aux/bluetooth). And atm, I have no means to do that. Now that I've set the scene, this is what I want help on:

1) I would like some sort of speaker/soundbar to connect my phone/laptop to (To stream music off Spotify etc.). I guess it would be cool if I could get something surround sound in my room - Hook up to corners of my room etc. I would've liked to get that $29 Kmart Soundbar with AUX and FM Tuner that waas posted a few months ago but all the stores were sold out.

2) I have bluetooth headphones and would love to use them to listen to the audio from my TV at night, without disturbing the rest of the house. Is there anyway I can connect to Bluetooth headphones to the TV?

3) Is it worth my while buying some sort of Media Hub to connect Hard Drives etc to, or should I just plug the Hard drives into my Laptop, then use HDMI from Laptop to TV? I'm really half hearted about this. I don't think I'll get one.

4) Last and not least, I have 4 micro-Usb charged devices:
- Sony MDRZ Wireless Headphones
- LG G watch
- LG G4 (Mobile Phone)
- My 10400MaH Xiaomi Power Bank
I want a 4-in-1 Charging Dock thingy. E.g. Like the Blitzwolf things I've seen deals for. My problem is that I don't know which one suits me (Charging amps and Voltage etc.) because I don't know if my LG G4 is Qualcomm compatible or whatever. In short, can someone please recommend a charging "setup" of some sort that will allow me to charge all 4 devices at one as quickly as possible. (Including a good link to cables please). I'm willing to spend decent money for this as I recently learned how important it is not to be a tight ass for this kind of stuff. (Blew up the battery in my friends MacBook when I used my Chinese junk microusb cable to charge my phone from his USB Port).

I'm sorry for language and grammar. For some reason, I'm really finding it difficult to describe what I would like in my room and how you can help. I'm still new to posting in Forums in general.

OH BTW, not sure if it matters but I've already got chromecast but my internet speeds are horrible which makes chromecast a waste of space.

Thanks everyone in Advance for helping :).

  • Get yourself one of the Blitzwolf 4 port chargers, that will sort you out for the charger - they're basically one of the best out there.

For the rest, I think you'd be best to buy yourself a Roku 3 unit - you'll have to learn a tiny bit to set it up (it's really not hard), but once set up you'll be able to stream Netflix, Spotify, YouTube etc all directly to the TV, you'll be able to "cast" things from your phone if you really want, you'll be able to watch videos from your other PC's via Plex if that's what floats your boat, and the Roku 3 and above has a headphone plug built into the remote which automatically cuts out the audio from the TV when you plug in headphones.

If you're happy with the TV speakers you don't need a soundbar - but if you want better sound, you can add one. You don't need it for the features you're looking for.

    • Hi mate,

Thanks for the input. I purchased this just then for my LG G4 and all my other devices. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/256550#comment-3845398, as per your suggestion.

I haven't looked into what a Roku 3 is yet. But it doesn't sound like something I'd go for. (No rational reason, i'm just a bit afraid of change…and Idk what the Roku 3 is, nor have I ever heard of it). I have a Chromecast for most of that, despite the fact that it barely works. I guess the Roku 3 would also require WiFi.

Also, my headphones are bluetooth, so I can't plug them into the Roku.

Thanks nonetheless for your advice. Appreciate it mate.

You can get a Google Chromecast for about $30 and it works very well for streaming Netflix/Spotify/Youtube. You can even cast your phone screen or a Chrome browser window from your PC. Apparently there's even a way to play any videos from your PC through the Chromecast using VLC media player.

Also check if your DSE TV has a USB port. You should be able to just play videos from your hard drives directly on the TV. No media hub required.

Look for a 2nd hand sound bar with optical. I bet it will sound soo much better than the built in speakers.

As for your bluetooth headphones, you can just get a cheap bluetooth transmitter. Have a look at this guide: http://www.howtogeek.com/219326/how-to-add-bluetooth-headpho…

    • I've got a Chromecast. Thanks for the suggestion though. WiFi and Internet in general is poor in my area, rendering my Chromecast pretty useless unfortunately.

DSE TV has a USB Port though I've never tried plugging a hard drive to it. I always thought it was only for images etc. I'll try it tonight. Thanks for the heads up.

And thanks for info RE: Bluetooth transmitter. I paid $30 for a Logitech reciever/transmitter/something rather which I confused for this product, wasted my money lol. It turned out it was something you use to connect bluetooth speakers…and not Bluetooth headphones…or something like that. But yes, I'll look into what you suggested.

      • IIRC you can now do peer to peer with Chromecast, cutting the actual mediocre network out of the equation. People also use this function in hotel rooms.

        • If only I knew what that meant…

Lol I'll get my mate to have a second look over this thread. He's into tech!

          Thanks.

        • @unistudent1: It means you can connect directly from your computer/phone/tablet to your Chromecast without involving your main network. Google has pretty good instructions to do it simply. ;)

        • @StewBalls:

          Thanks mate!

        • @unistudent1: No worries, I hope you get a win with it! :)

  • I'm sorry for language and grammar.

Don't be…I only wish more of my colleagues & subordinates were as erudite as you.

Oh stop it StewBalls, you're making me blush…
