28 Degrees Credit Card Charging Fee for Payments (Excludes Payments Via Online Service Centre)

Just a reminder that 28 degrees is charging a fee of 99c $0.95 for payments not made using their online service centre. I think the change kicks in around this week.

    95 cents, not 99 cents

This is really unusual. So even payment via bpay are going to be hit with a fee?

    • +2

      looks like it.
      Thanks for the PSA.
Looks like only way to avoid fees is login to 28 deg, go to "my account" and "pay my account" and enter your bank details.
      Takes 3 days to clear

      • +2

        As well as direct debit.

The other day, I paid via the online centre (on a Fri night), the money remained in my account until the Wed morning run (after Tues), but when processed on Wed morning, was back-dated to Mon by the bank.

      • if you do this, don't you get charge by your bank ?

        • I think it is a once-off direct debit. I don't see any charges.

    • +2

Especially payments via bpay. And they will only allow you to make an exact payment for the outstanding amount at the time of payment. If a pending payment clears between paying it off and your due date, your account will be owing again and you will be hit for price protection insurance fees if you have that. Further, if you pay off the exact amount owing with bpay, the $0.95 gets applied later, again pushing you into negative balance and upsetting your fees and due dates again. At least with bpay you can pay more than the exact amount owing. This really sucks that you have to pay to make a payment, otherwise be stuck with a bunch of sub-standard payment options.

I just logged in, saw that you could specify how much you'd like to transfer.

It sucks that they essentially reduce 3 days off your interest free cycle by doing this.

These new changes have left me with a poor experience. It's as though they're waiting for us to slip up and then hit us with a fine.

        • I think you are right on the mark, about the last bit … especially restrictions on how often you pay via the online centre.

      • Not only that, the minimum number of days must pass by before you can use the online centre again for payments.

  • Is there still any benefit using this card over the Citibank?

    • Bump; anyone?

    • Yes.
      - compared to Citibank Credit Card, which charges international fee for foreign transactions.
      - compared to Citibank Plus (debit card), which is a debit card instead of credit card. The usual benefits of using credit card as opposed to debit cards.

      • Are the fees offset by a better exchange rate? Don't have a citibank card so can't compare

        • +1

Well, most of us, I would imagine, will not pay the fees. We will be using the online centre to make payments. As to your question, it depends on the volume and amount of the foreign transactions involved. But I would think that in most cases, even if one were to pay the 95c, it will easily be offset by the foreign exchange fees, which many other cards levy, a typical 3% (?)

  • +1

Does this apply for direct debit ??

    • +2

No. Direct debit will be free.

  • Please also note that in using the online centre to pay, a minimum number of days must pass by, before you can access that functionality again.

    • +1

wow really? that just might be the straw that breaks the camel's back to make me cancel the card

      • Yes, from memory it was 5 days.

        • +1

Why would you need to make 2 payments in less than 5 days or even at all. Either pay it off all at once or not at all?

        • +2

@RockyRaccoon: Let's say you are planning to go overseas, and you like to settle everything on the credit card prior to this. The statement is due 3 days before you leave. So you settle that first. However, very recent transactions have yet to appear on the statement. When they do, just before you leave, you would like to pay that off as well. But you won't be able to, due to this restriction.

Not saying it is a massive problem, just an inconvenience.

        • @bluesky: Fair enough, thanks for the example

        • @RockyRaccoon: Not just a hypothetical either. (BTW, it wasn't me who negged you, it was a valid question :-) )

  • +2

Just keep the card for overseas transactions. Never use it in Australia so you do not need to pay it very often. Unless you travel overseas a lot.

    • +2

still need in Australia, for those amazon deals etc.

      • just add 95c to your deal ;)

        • Not if one makes payments from within the online centre :-)

  • +1

you can blame the take over by private equity for the new "convenience fees"

    • Yes. Who is Latitude Finance?

  • +1

I will be cancelling - ridiculous to charge me for BPay

    Suggestions for overseas card?

    • Debit cards:
1- Citibank Plus - free everything @ VISA rates
2- ING Direct Orange Everyday - $2.50 fee per cash withdrawal @ VISA rates

      Credit cards:
      1- 28 Degrees Mastercard - free
2- Coles Rewards Mastercard - $89 annual fee but you get 2 Flybuys points per $1 spend

28Deg's benefits outweigh the hassle of paying via their OSC to save $0.95. Don't you need to download the statement anyway?

      • I don't like direct debit to my savings for ANY bill (personal taste) - it's the reason I use a credit card!

        • Care to explain why it bothers you so much? Technically paying through their OSC is like a monthly ONE-OFF direct debit.

        • @sky blu: Some people just do not like to divulge their saving account details to any party. Quite understandable. Personally, I try not to as well if I could use BPAY etc without charges.

        • @sky blu:

Giving them the authority to access my savings;, it's not something I give authority to anyone else. I don't do it for my mortgage, power, gas, phone & I'm not about to do it for some credit card company who has 'bought' my business and moved the goal posts in relation to settling my debt

I'm not trying to change anyone else's mind - I just don't feel comfortable with it

  • Is it still worth it?

I see so many deals on here that practically scream at me to use this card, so I'm only just now looking into it.

My current credit card (Which I only use for emergencies/some online payments anyway) is with NAB, so there's no real benefits to it other than it being tied to my NAB account.

Far as I can tell, 28 Degrees is better in every aspect. Still. Especially since it has 55 days without interest meaning I'll never have to pay any because I'm prompt with payments. Speaking of which, how does one pay it off? Can you connect it your bank somehow or is there some other method of payment?

Sorry for the newbish questions, I've only ever had a credit card from my bank. :P Just figured this one might serve me better, particularly for Amazon purchases..

    • Assuming your NAB doesn't earn you any kind of points, which I doubt it does, 28Deg beats NAB in every way possible.

Just get one, you're already late to the game.

You pay off just like you do with any other cards. Just beware as of 28Deg's new rule from July onwards, there will be a fee for BPAY payments. It is free if you DD or pay via their OSC.

      • Cool. Figured as such.

Did a comparison on them last night and yeah, 28 Degrees wins in every way. Heck, at the very least it saves me 30 bucks a year.

Thanks for your help. :) Reckon I'll make a switch.

  • Wish I'd read this PSA, just got hit for 95 cents and was wondering what that was.

Is the Bankwest credit card the next best thing then? Or just suck it up and go through the OSC to make payments? What a hassle!

  • I would have thought the Bankwest Zero credit would be a substitute for the 28 Degrees given it's fee free for foreign transaction as well.

    Can I raise a hypothetical?

Lets say my outstanding balance in Jan was $500 and I paid this in full via BPAY (then make no further purchases), I would have a outstanding balance of 95c in Feb because of this fee. If I theoretically paid this via BPAY 95c in Feb, then I would get hit with another 95c fee in Mar and it would continue forever until I either used BPAY to pay $1.90 or used their online direct debit service centre facility?

If I only want to use BPAY, then I suppose the most efficient way to pay would have been to pay $500.95 in Jan?

    • Yes, I think so. Theoretically, they can even charge you interest on the 95c owed, but in practice, I doubt they will. Well, the other way is to pay $500.95. And you will have covered the 95c fee.

    • I just round up and pay an extra dollar plus any "uncleared" pending purchases. Luckily with BPAY you can pay more than the balance, it is problematic paying more than the balance with other methods.

  • Any sort of fee is annoying but I would say, for me, the fee is inconsequential compared to the savings with this card.

I have had the card for a few months now and have compared prices/costs a few times to how I used to buy stuff with Paypal and ANZ Visa. For checking live it looks to me like 28 Degrees converted OS cash at the median rate of the day compared to Paypal & Visa who were using the cash buying rate or worse on each transaction (therefore costing an extra 3% or more, Paypal conversion rates are horrible).

Then you add on the International Transaction fee on Visa and the costs really mount. My last months 28 Degrees statement after purchases at Humble Bundle, Amazon, Newfrog, Udemy and Japanese car hire etc came in over AUD $2000 and the extra costs of bad rates and fees had I not done it with 28 Degrees would have probably been $74 or higher.

I don't spend that much every month but even after just a few small purchases I am already ahead each month.

I have no affiliation with them, just trying to save as many bucks as I can and I can handle 95c no problem.

they say the feature to pay via bank account is unavailable so only way is to pay the bpay fee. farkk

    • Where did you hear that? It looks available on the payment page to me. I'd pay off my balance to verify it still works, but my savings are a bit empty at the moment.

    • I have encountered this a number of times. Usually this happens at night or early morning, when it is unavailable temporarily. But try again later (usually in the daytime) and it is available again.
