Check price history. Every time eBay run these sales, the prices are jacked up. I was looking at a listing during the last 20% tech sale. Seller sold 20 items per day at $250. Prior to 20% sale it was $190 and was only getting 4-5 sale per day, so in essence you would be better off buying when there was no sale. Amazing how many people don't bother checking and just blindly "buy it now" because they "think" they're getting a bargain.

    • +2

While that is true for some it isn't for all. I've been following TV's and in the last 20% off sale they were actually reduced at the start of the sale and then another 20% off on top of that.
I don't doubt it happens a lot as they should be held accountable for doing that. Didn't some company get done by the ACCC for doing just that (Jacking up prices only to take 20% off and be the same or in some cases more than before the sale?).

I do agree you need to check the price history before buying as well as looking at what the final price is and compare that to what you can buy it for at any other store.

      • +3

There has been companies done by the ACCC in regards to jacking up prices prior to sales.

However in the case of eBay sales as far as i know there hasn't been any companies done by the ACCC. It's a gray area because technically eBay is doing the sale not the actual store. Therefore the store can change their prices. Which is why when you request for a tax invoice it has the full amount on it.

If the store was doing a sale the tax invoice will show the discounted amount as it will become an accounting issue since the books won't match.

Yes its unethical but when has ethics stopped ozbargainers from snagging a bargain?

        • their work around now is to keep 2 listings. a cheaper everyday price which they close down during the sale

and an RRP markedup listing which they bring up during the sale

that way they simply say its two unrelated listings and the price history proves that the item always sold at that price

Where is the link to the item being discussed?

      • +3

I agree with you that too many people make wild claims about price gouging, and then things like the ACCC will ping sellers etc.

However in this case overshopper is giving us clues how to tell if you are really getting a bargain.

Its a strategy rather than a wild claim.

A link to the item that overshopper uses as the example would be of limited value, so even if the example would be proven to be "invalid" the technique isn't.

So you're claiming that they increased the price on ONE item and left the other at the low price because of this promotion? The truth is that they often have two items listed at different prices and so do many other retailers on ebay. Why have two items listed that are the same price? Makes no sense. Look at the sales history of those products and the revision history because you have no idea what you are talking about. Yet another false claim from someone who has trouble using a web browser.

Pretty sure the prices just got jacked. I have been looking at the 34 ultrawide Asus 100hz gsync and it was 1800 a few days ago on these retailers which has now been bumped up to 2k.

    Yeah great bargain,

    • This one? I've been considering buying it too. $1799 at Pccasegear.

      http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/172243025553?_mwBanner=1

The 20% off does save you $100 though ($1671 by my math) compared to staticice. But I've a bad taste in my mouth so won't be buying it!

      • That is the one.

Nowif it was 1800 with 20 percent off id acrually buy it, but not when the price gets jacked up like that

        • Well it was $2250 on 21 June (Last 20% off sale). One person paid that price. Seems it's price fluctulates a fair bit…

$1799 is the cheapest price on staticice - so still a bargain at $2089 less 20%
          '

        • @GreatWhiteHunter: I don't really think $200 or less than PC Case Gear is a bargain for a monitor that retails for $1700+.

The same monitor is being sold on ebay by other retailers for $1800 - this is the price I would expect to see from sellers that are participating in this deal.

I will wait and see what happens with the price going forward, as I don;t really have evidence at there was a price jack - even though I strongly suspect that this is the case.

At $1440 (20% of $1800) this becomes an actual bargain, and tempting enough to buy.
At $1600 - they can go **** themselves.

        • @x853:

At $1799 PC Case Gear is surprisingly equal cheapest on staticice.

Generally PC Case Gear are ripoff merchants charging 10% more than almost any other store. PCCG also increase their prices on EBAY > their own web site - assumably to cover the EBAY fees…

Case in point, the monitor is $1969 on PC Case Gear EBAY
          http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-ASUS-PG348Q-ROG-Swift-34in-10…

Also if you check the PC Case Gear web site, that monitor's delivery charge is $73 to my postcode 2315.

So PC Case Gear's delivered price is $1872!

If $1671 delivered for a monitor you can't buy anywhere in Australia for less than $1799 (before shipping) is not a bargain, you are hard to please.

        • @GreatWhiteHunter: PC Case gear is a ripoff on ebay but using the prices on their website is often very sensible (along with MSY). It is good to use that as a price ceiling.

Again the price as it is now well above what I would be willing to spend - I am just more interested to see if there have been shenanigans.

Happy to look at the price changes during and after the sale.
$1600 is still by no means a bargain. It is below market and is ok-ish but if you think this is a bargain, then I guess we disagree on the definition.

If the good was priced competitively on ebay ($1,800 along with other stores) and then there was a 20% discount - then yes that is to me a bargain.

I have a solid dell 27 inch 1440p IPS, so for me to bite it would need to be something great (each to their own).

        • @x853:

Are you somehow suggesting PC Case Gear are generally as competitive in their pricing as MSY??

If so, what are you smoking?

        • @GreatWhiteHunter: Hmm that is not what I was suggesting at all. My point was I look t PCCG and MSY and I use their price (along with static ice) to find the price ceiling.

Then determine what is a 'bargain' relative to those listed prices.

If you think $128 off (7.1%) on an item that is $1800 is a bargain - then I don't think we are on the same wave lengths.

Is this even Ozbargain??? 7.1% seriously?

Quality control issues on this product and you have a 1 in 3 chance of issues,, dead pixels, backlight bleed, ext.. the Acer XF270HU is the same as it used the same after market panel from some dodgy Chinese supplier.

      • Which is better of the two, XF270HU or MG279Q?

        • Same panel but look up "freesync range" on XF270HU vs MG279Q

          @wannagrababargain:

MG279Q maxes out at 90hz vs 144hz freesync on the acer.. A very simple app lets you change the range on yhe asus now so its not a big deal.. I wouldnt buy either of them due to so many issues.. Too risky

Better off buying from a store you can take it back too on the same day when you find all the issue with it

        • @vid_ghost:

Ok thanks. I read about the QC issues but most of that activity around that seems to be about a year old. Kinda holding out for the Viewsonic XG2703 at the moment.

      • 720 is actually not bad. Pretty tempting to be honest

Oh mybad I thought this was the PG 1440p range not the freesync range.

I would buy the 1440p version for that price but maybe not the freesync.

      • Do you know any good <$200 IPS 23-24" monitors?

    • There has been a lot of talk about if prices have been jacked or not. I feel like they have as I have been researching monitor prices over the last few days on ebay. I will be happy to reply to this post with post sale prices and see if they go down - that should be evidence enough.

I still don't understand how jacking the prices up before a sale is legal, surely it's misleading advertising? A reasonable person would expect a 20% off sale would be 20% off the store's normal price and creates a false impression. Now it might be reasonable that the store had a sale on some of its product lines that were advertised with a different discount amount or percentage, might have that discount removed prior to the new discount applying, but these stores display a clear retail price that increases significantly just prior to (or during) the sale.

Is there a register or list of companies that engage in this behaviour so that I can at least exercise my power as a consumer and not ever buy from them since the ACCC clearly won't protect me from these sorts of malicious business practices?

Edit: Also, is there a reason why people won't mark this as no deal as it isn't due to the price hikes? Seems to just further advertise eBay and the relevant companies involved. There might be the odd 'bargain' or two in there but they should be listed as bargains themselves, and not the sale as a whole

      • +3

Everything you just said makes no sense. When a business either directly or through a company they pay money to for advertising lists a reduction in prices any reasonable person would expect, I don't know, a reduction in prices. This is not 'a guy standing outside <the> store', it's paid advertisement.

I am choosing to be an informed, savvy buyer, hence I'm raising the concern of what they're doing and asking if there are a list of retailers who take this action so that I can avoid them.

If you're happy to waste your time and effort harvesting through a sea of tricks, misleading posts and false advertising for something that's actually discounted (much less than the advertised price), more power to you, I'll just choose to exercise my not inconsiderable buying power and shop elsewhere.

      • +3

In common sense, 20% off is 20% on the original price , not a hiking price. No matter how high your price was, but shouldn't be changed after seller know this deal coming.

Seller have right to move off the products from promotion list, but the only purpose of hiking price is they want to sell to some customers at that price. Some hiking price make the advertisement somehow 'misleading'.

Refer to this http://www.9news.com.au/national/2016/07/15/18/27/olympic-co…. Telstra didn't say anything wrong, but it's misleading, base on common sense.

NO one sue it, because it isn't worth, but doesn't means it's right. Fair and faith trading is good for all sellers and customers.

PS: Seller don't need to fulfill price error (https://www.lawanswers.com.au/blog/australian-consumer-law-r…). That's law defined.

    • Completely agree with you - I did end up buying a "meh bargain" G502 for $71 from Wireless 1 - but overall the monitors I was watching appear to be inflated

    • I had this issue with JB Hifi. They had a 30% sale on speakers but the price barely moved from the day before. They said the sale was off the RRP and the previous day's low price was their 'normal' everyday price. They fessed up and said the item should have gone back up to the RRP 7 days before the 30% off sale. They conceded they were in the wrong and gave my 30% off their regular price.

  • -2

The guy said "All the GTX 1080's got marked up by 20%"

I said "Link to one that has been marked up…."

So far the guy who complained has provided diddly squat proof of anything.

Neosin has provided a screenshot rather than a link for a single card that is a 1070, not a 1080, that he claims has been increased in price by less than 7%.

I'm still waiting for evidence of a single GTX 1080 being marked up, let alone ALL of them….

If the seller increases the price by 7% for the sale, it's still cheaper buying it at 107% less 20% than it is buying it at 100%.

But my main concern is the BS being spread by people falsely claiming "All the GTX 1080's got marked up by 20%"

I got one of the $1259 Asus Strix (non-OC cards) less 20%. That's a hell of a lot cheaper than the cheapest price on Staticice….
hopefully they actually have stock, because those cards are tough to find in stock anywhere.

        • @GreatWhiteHunter: theyre speaking in hyperboles

People are just really annoyed at this completely disingenuous sale intended to mislead the non savvy buyers that this is a huge discount when really it its 5-7% at best if you're lucky for specific items

There are some items where the price is worse off

there are items where the price hasnt changed

there are items where the price has gone down such as yours. However where this has occured, the savings in real terms isnt 20% by any means compared to everyday prices.

And this is what they are pissed about.

The reason is twofold. One its misleading, even if a marginal saving is available

Secondly, we know why the sellers are doing this. But this doesnt justify the tactic at the end of the day. Ebay is footing the bill (waiving their final value fees and possibly more depending on the retailer). So the retailer has to cover the remainder of that 20% less what ebay is covering.

The thing is, even if the products they are selling have thin margins. Ebay footing the bill should already mean an approximate 8-10% in lower cost already. This would mean that even if the sellers did nothing on the majority of their items, and genuinely changed the price so that the net discount they are losing is offset by the savings from ebay footing the bill on final value fees (that are normally included in the price). But even then this is kinda unethical, because really people are saving about 10% or so and not really the advertised 20%

So there is alot of back and forth in this thread between ozbargainers. with alot of words being thrown about. Hyperboles mainly. One saying markups and zero bargains, and the other the opposite. The reality is the middle ground

At the end of the day. If im really saving 5%, then call it so, dont make big marketing claims that its 20% off, when i am only getting something cheaper by 5% or even not in some instances.

  • I thought oh crap, I just bought a Dell monitor, but they don't have the model I bought, nor any similar better on their ebay site.

I did get 10% standard Dell pricing via Cash Rewards.

It's a shame about Dell, currently they've got 15% off most of their 15" XPS line (as well as a few others) on their website, but that discount hasn't carried over to their Ebay listing of the exact same item.

Would have been a great deal if the ebay price matched their website price.

    • Seems unlikely given that they don't have to pay ebay fees when selling via their website. If it was at the same price, they'd be making less margin.

  • Is there a way of trying the code, without purchasing an item (!!?) I want to use it as soon as it's live but I am hesitant to click buy it now, because I forget if ebay classes that as a transaction completed?

Choose "Add to cart", then before checkout you can enter the code.

Is it to see the price? If so, just use a calculator and multiply by 0.8.

It's so sad to see these retailers taking advantage of the sale. Maybe ebay's hitting them hard with fees?? But still, not enough excuse to jack up prices. I salute retailers who retain their prices. Even as a simple gesture, ozbargain community supports you!

    • its getting really old and these deals are not attractive any more.

Of course ebay are hitting them with additional fees to be in these sales, this is on top of the already excessive fees that ebay charge.
