  • Does anyone know how to store these avocados? Refrigerator?

    • If you buy hard ones then store em in fruit basket or if the are very soft try to consume them ASAP

    • +1

I refrigerate mine when they're soft to the touch, it'll have some give but still firm. Keeps for a few days longer that way.

  • Confirmed at Woolies Frankin, ACT

omg this makes me cry. I have always loved avocados. Used to eat them daily. Cut them in half, eat them with a spoon. On a steak. In a salad. On toast.

Then, 4 years ago I developed food allergies to certain foods that include avocados. I have not tasted the amazing goodness for 4 long years.

Please, someone, buy a bag for this cheap and have one on my behalf.

    • +3

      What's your issue with Frasier??

      • +1

I'm guessing it's just a reference to one of his episodes. The editor of a newspaper was writing that and they were going to fight at one stage if I recall correctly.

        • +1

          Indeed. Season 1, episode 4.

        • +1

'I developed food allergies to certain foods that include avocados. I have not tasted the amazing goodness for 4 long years.'

Hey there IH-FrazCrane, have you tried 'treating' the avacado in any way, to see if that nullifies whatever component of it is triggering your allergic response? Because it is likely to be just one single type of molecule therein that is triggering it.

For example, there is a good chance that if you made up a nice creamy (thoroughly homogenised/mashed) guacamole containing a reasonable amount of lemon juice, then the citric acid in the lemon juice may denature the offending molecule to the extent that it would no longer trigger your allergic response.

Also, heat might denature the offending molecule. So for example, you could try putting cubes of avocado on a pizza, and ensuring that the cubes are cooked through (i.e. cook the pizza long enough to ensure that happens), and try a very small amount (at first) to see if it still triggers your allergy.

I think it's 'odd's on' that at least one of these methods would allow you to once again enjoy the (awesome) taste of avocados.

Obviously this is a 'bargains' website chat so this is not official medical advice, but I suggest you run these suggestions by your GP/specialist, and try them out. If you'd like to reintroduce avocados into your diet that is. Of course you could always go down the 'desensitisation' path, but that could be long/expensive. The options I describe above may be effective, and would be essentially free (bargain!!!) :)

  • muahaha i got my last odd bunch for $2 at woolies… i manage to find one decent bag out of the lot of squishy over ripe one at that price though.. ps do your grocery at night and you might spot it at the price i did? i should have took a photo..

      • with milk and a little sugar. i like it.

        • I've seen avo drinks before n they didn't appeal to me then n that drink you suggested sounds icky too :|

        • @pikapika: Another ozbargainer here to confirm it's a great combo! Try it without sugar, even.

      • Have you tried avocado smoothie? Mix some brown/coconut sugar in…heaven!

  • Live where most avos are grown, $3 at local market for bag 8 huge ones. Winning.

    • where?

    • Yeah where? Would consider dropping in if I ever did a road trip. That's all the reason I would need to go a fair way out of my way.

      • +2

Bundy. :) not always such good price but is atm.

        • Not just for the rum!

I ordered a bag with my click and collect order, ticked the box allowing staff to replace if item is unavailable. Turned out they ran out of the odd bunch so I got a bag of 10 normal avocados for $2.90 :-)

    • They never stock 10 normal avocado bags.

      • That's right, not in a bag. I meant 10 avos that are usually sold at $4 for 2 (or something like that).

  • when I look on their website it says $4.90.. how do we get it for $2.90 please? thanks

  • I've been eating at least 5 avos a week now that they're about $2.50-$3 a kilo (at local groceries).

Just 6 months ago I thought 2 for $5 at Woolies was a decent deal…

  • ALLEGEDLY!!!!!!!!!!

Place unripe avocados in a brown paper bag to ripen. This traps the ethylene gas they produce and helps them to ripen. A firm avocado placed in a paper bag will ripen at room temperature in about three to six days. As the fruit ripens, the skin color will darken.

    • +4

      As an avid avo consumer….

Put with some ripe bananas…. apparently they give off something that speeds up ripening

Then once they are ripe into the fridge, were they will keep perfectlyfor several days

  • +2

An Avogadro's number of avocados makes a mole of guacamole

    • Mole problems? Ring Avogadro right away.

  • ?How do you take back an upvote, i misread it as 910 per bag! Disappointing!

    • +1

But it wouldn't be an odd bunch spoecial with 910… It would be a Bring-your-Truck special!

In regards to taking an upvote off I think if you just click it again it should remove it.

  • $4.40 at my local woolies yesterday (Perth metro)

  • I was so happy until I saw the state "VIC" :(

    • Yeah, I'm glad and sad. Glad because I bought at $4.90 just before this was posted and it isn't any less in NSW. Sad because I would have bought more at $2.90 and binged.

  • I eat an avo a day. So this deal is very satisfying.

  • Mine had 7.
