How Do OzBargainers Cheer Themselves up after Missing a Deal?

I did my grocery shopping at Woolworths recently and the bill came to just over $100.

Not sure exactly why (perhaps I was tired), but I forgot to scan a 'Spend $100+, get $10 Woolworths Rewards Dollars' barcode that had been posted on Ozbargain. To make things worse, we scanned my SO's Woolworths rewards card instead of mine, which meant I missed out on another offer of 'Spend $65+ and get $10 Woolworths Rewards Dollars' that had been specifically targeted to me.

Needless to say, I was upset. Depressed, in fact. My SO says that I need to get over it because it's only $20 and we had already saved $60 at lunch using an Entertainment book voucher (25% off) at a venue that was part of the AMEX Mid-year promo (Spend $100, get $30 cashback), but… I'm still kicking myself.

So, fellow Ozbargainers, any tips on how I can cheer myself up? What do you do to make yourself feel better after missing a deal?

We drink alcohol that we bought on special from OzBargain, to wash the pain away.

You bought the WW gift card at 5% discount first didn't you? To save $5 off every $100, before the Rewards offer…? ;)

Careful man, he's already on the edge.

      • Is there still a duty to rescue (if a sale is on)? lol

      • Op should call lifeline. They like chatting to people

Yes, thankfully. We've been using WW eGift cards for a few years now. We use them to buy groceries, buy petrol at Caltex WW and top up Opal cards. Actually I think the WW eGift cards I used were 5.25% off from Cash Rewards, so feeling slightly better now.

      • Is it possible to top off Opal at Caltex WW, or is it only at WW supermarket?

        • Some WW you can. Off the top of my head, town hall and central

We count the money we didn't spend (ie saved) 👍

  • Only time can heal a broken heart!

    • I agree. Just try to remember next time!

I always think that there are always better Ozbargainers out there! I would think to myself that at least I try and also think about other people who don't know about these deals (maybe you would feel better if you take notice of how other people in the supermarket don't use any rewards card or gift card…)

I look for coins in car parks late at night.

    • Oh gosh, I almost thought you were my SO. His favourite pass time in a carpark is looking for trolleys with coins in them!

You know those "Spend $150 dollars for four weeks and get a $100 giftcard" promotion? He gets one of his co-workers to do that for him and in return the said co-worker gets to purchase the giftcard off him at a discounted rate.

He is currently at work on his RDO, buying lunch for people so he could get their points.
Prior to this we were at a park catching Pokemon.

He is a real catch ;)

I start to cry, then I realise chuck Norris doesnt need deals. Deals need chuck Norris and I feel better.

You saved $60 (25%) on lunch. You spent $180 on lunch???

    • +8

I think i would be crying over that loss of money more!!

    • I think it should be $120. 25% off lunch + $30 from the Amex promo deal?

      • +1

        should be $135

    • There were 6 of us, so yes, it came to around $170 before discounts (the EB offer was 25% off, max $30). It was nice though. But maybe that's why I forgot about the offers - too sleepy from a big lunch. Lesson learned!

You buy the next top deal on the main page, no matter what it is.

I feel your pain, I've done this before and it doesn't feel good

  • +1

Search OzBargain history for previous deals on the same thing to remind myself that these things usually come around again.

It's a risky move because sometimes that proves they are were a one off, never to be repeated, deal of a lifetime and I'm left sobbing into my Aldi brand cornflakes.

  • I look at the treats or other small luxuries that I was planning on buying over the next few weeks and just cut back some of them until I get to $20 in value or whatever size deal I didn't get.

I mixed up 2 of my flybuys cards a couple of weeks ago but luckily I only lost about 30 cents of points.

Normally I just find a small child in a supermarket and call them a, "Little Bastard" out of earshot of their parents. Then when they go and tell their parents and I'm confronted, I look shocked, shake my head sadly and mutter, "It's sad how often children lie these days."

I went through something similar. Coles used to email me the promotion, get a $20 discount voucher after you shop 4 weeks in a row. I gave it a go. On the last shop I felt elated to see the discount voucher printed at the bottom of the receipt. Unfortunately it was the store's closing time and a rude security guard was berating me to hurry up and leave. I couldn't hear the cashier telling me the voucher had an expire date.

To get the $20 Coles voucher I overspent on a months stockpile of tuna and dry goods and didn't need to shop at Coles again. I alternated the next groceries at Aldi+Wollies. When I shopped at Coles again I realised the voucher expired 2 days ago. I was very unhappy about Coles putting an expiry date on such a difficult promotion. Plus chunky about the security guard experience.

Decided not to shop at Coles for a year. Saved so much at Aldi. My Aldi grocery trips felt calm and uncomplicated. Didn't have to remember expiry dates. Instantly deleted all supermarket email promotions.

After a year I happened to shop in another town's Coles. Days later I receive a Coles survey email. I gave my local Coles another go and I received a survey email for the local Coles too.

Now I laugh at how big a con the Coles + Woolworths email promotions are. Its a marketing gimmick to consistently get you thinking about them. I liken them to expiring Fly Buy points or $100 cashback on TV promotions. The promotions were never meant to be cashed in. They are designed for people to easily forget.

The best revenge is don't shop with them. Give your support and custom to a competitor who is more fair.

If / whenever I get one of those Coles offers you described, I choose flybuys points. The rate of reward is the same but you're not locked in to spend the voucher within a month. You choose to do it whenever you want, by redeeming the points for dollars, when you're ready

      • When you redeem points for $$ do they expire?

        • +1

You can exchange them for Coles gift cards or Kmart ones etc, so it would be valid for the standard 12/24 months.

Not sure about flybuys $$$ but I think it's about the same. I usually spend it quickly, so it doesn't become a factor.

        • +1

          @bluedufflecoat:

Flybuys dollars don't expire provided you keep earning points with the flybuys program.

        • @pointscrazy: They expire after a year if you dont earn anymore fb points

I know how you feel - I'm still spewing about those Harvey Norman half-price Philips earphones I missed out on. No way am I paying $7 for those!! Grumble, grumble.

    Gee are you real?

  • A guy I know has a different approach. If he misses out on a saving (or has an extra expense), he'll just spend the amount he would have saved on something frivolous like a fancy dinner or bottle of wine.

So, in your case, just go spend $20 on something fun you normally wouldn't buy.

Seems counter-intuitive, but works for him.

  • I missed out on purchasing a 70 inch tv about 18 months ago for ~$1600. Nothing remotely as cheap/large has come up since. I'm still watching my sad 5 year old 40 inch.
Not quite the same as purchasing something and then realising it was cheaper, but still…

Wifey recently bought some stuffs online from Priceline. I had previously told her to let me know so we can use cashrewards.
She shopped during night time (without cashrewards) when I was asleep, spent about $200 while telling me while I was asleep. She said she asked me when I was asleep and I said "yes go ahead" but of course I couldn't remember!!

Turns out cashback for priceline was around 7% if im not mistaken, which amounts to $14. I was quite upset and told her to always let me know next time if she wants to shop online

A week later, a friend of mine asked me to buy Nike shoes for around $350. Stupidly I went to the store and bought the item.
I went back and a few weeks later realized Cashrewards also has Nike for about 4.5%, which amounts to $14 as well. (which is basically free money as my friend later paid for the item).

Wifey knew about this and kept teasing me about the 'unfortunate' event and started saying people makes mistakes including the priceline issue.
So I cheer myself up, everyone makes mistakes………. which hurts

Nonetheless, I kept quiet from then on. :(
    Karma is on wifey side

  • How many people are kicking themselves about the eBay 10% off sale? I would have only saved $25 on my purchase i made the week before the sale but still, as an Ozbargainer knowing i could have saved that if i had waited, it hurts man!
