I always find Shopping Express deals to be more click bait than value. It is hard, if not impossible, to check there really is 50 in stock. They may have 10 at this price and you would never know.

    • +1

They do have deals with only 10, those are hard to justify posting as a deal. 50 however, you have a chance. Obviously SE do ship elsewhere, not just Australia, so that just further thins down your odds.

But if you want it, getting in there at the start you have a good chance.

      • +2

Yep, thanks for posting the deal. =)

    • It is possible to check. We can have a register in Oz bargain where we click on when we received the item from the deal. We would get to see rough numbers on purchases and very rough delivery times

  • Have these improved in reliability and performance since they first came out?

Price is OK (not fantastic) but not a particularly good SSD,

    540 MB/s Read / 490 MB/s Write

It only writes at that speed until the 3GB cache fills, then it only does about 80 mbps!!! In other words, copy more than 3GB in one go (eg: a movie, or large bunch of stuff) and the thing runs slower than a Platter HDD. Yep.

I suggest doing some research on this, read the reviews.

    eg: http://www.pcworld.com/article/3000913/storage/crucial-bx200…

Though it's extremely affordable, the BX200 suffers the worst sustained write performance of any SSD we've ever tested. That said, day to day performance is quite good. But unless the price drops significantly, you'll get better overall bang for your buck with the company's MX200

The BX100 was absolutely excellent, but the BX200 is not in any way an "update" to the BX100.

    • +2

It's all going to be relative. The BX200 drive is ~$125, $46 more than this drive, or over 50% more of the cost.
Like the review you linked to has the 960GB @ US$299 (~AU$391). To put that in perspective, at those prices this 240GB is worth ~$98.

You're always going to get more when you pay more. But for someone looking to spice up and old laptop, or hard on money but wants the boot speeds of SSD, this will do the trick.

Use a 2TB or higher drive for archiving and moving those large files (movies etc), use something like this to improve boot time and program loading times.

      • +1

Honestly, better to spend the extra ~$6 and get a low end sandisk when they're on sale. These are an upgrade on a hard disk, or good for an old laptop, but for the price of a large coffee, you may as well get something better.

It's all going to be relative. The BX200 drive is ~$125(staticice.com.au), $46 more than this drive, or over 50% more of the cost.

No, it's not. The BX200 is THIS DEAL and it is $79. Normal price is around $85, so this isn't really much of a saving (except the free delivery).

And if you made (numerously repeated) typos, the MX200 is $119 on StaticIce (I have no idea what you found that was ~$125).

To put that in perspective, at those prices this 240GB is worth ~$98.

Not sure what point you are trying to make? I linked to the review only because I quoted text from it. I wasn't intending that you do a price comparison, as the American prices are not relevant anyway. The current StaticIce price of BX200 960GB is $365 and the 240GB is $85.

You're always going to get more when you pay more.

Yes, which makes it even more worthwhile to pay a tiny bit extra to get a MUCH better drive than this POS.

$79 Kingston UV400 (also pretty shit)
        $79 Transcend SSD220S
        $83 SanDisk SSD Plus
$85 OCZ Trion 100 (Toshiba cheapo)
$89 OCZ Trion 150 (<< probably the best cheapy, only $10 more)
        $89 Geil Zenith
        etc etc

But for someone looking to spice up and old laptop, or hard on money but wants the boot speeds of SSD, this will do the trick.

Of course. Yet you obviously didn't even read the review and/or understanding what it says… which is that this SSD is often slower than a HDD. It is THE SLOWEST drive that they have ever tested. I'd go so far as to say it's the slowest SSD available full stop,

Use a 2TB or higher drive for archiving and moving those large files (movies etc), use something like this to improve boot time and program loading times

Well, derrr. You are trying to sell the idea of installing a SSD. I am pointing out that this deal (the 240GB BX200) is pretty much THE MOST SHIT SSD you can buy. In the sub-$100 price point there is a ton of choices, and much better value to be had. You're taking a big performance hit from that teenie $6 (6%) discount.

This is a much better drive IMO. http://www.pclan.com.au/index.php/suv400s37a-240g.html

    $77 and free shipping.

Thanks mate. This is much better.

So it seems that, all things considered (low stock, crappy product, mediocre price), the posted "deal" is pretty terrible.

      • How is it better? Not only is it worse in every way, but you are supporting a company that scams its customers. (search 'kingston bait and switch')

        • Don't think they've done bait and switch with the UV400 though. They've learnt from the last time so shouldn't happen again.

Worse in which ways? Check out the issue posted earlier in the comments for the BX200.

        • +1

@donnot: The problem is that if people act like the switch didn't happen, no doubt someone will exploit their customers again. If people stop buying Kingston products, then it sends a message.

      • Does it have the cache issue where it slows to ~100mb/s once the cache fills up though? (Outlined in llama's comment above).

For about $25 dollar more, Samsung 850 EVO is still better value for money. I mean forget about the writing/reading speed and reliability. Longer life expectancy, 5 year warranty(vs. 3 yr) and Samsung software(Samsung Magician) are worth more than $25.

      • For a typical user, there isn't much difference. The failure rate is so low on these drives with consumer use (i.e. no heavy sustained writes), the extra warranty isn't really worth it.

According to the 850 EVO product page, the warranty covers 5 years or 75TBW, while the UV400 allows 3 years or 100TBW.

The software doesn't add much value in a way that other freeware can (IMO).

On top of that, the 850 Evo you linked for $25 extra has 1/2 the capacity of the 240GB Kingston UV400.

  • any good value 500gb ssd atm?

  • +1

Very poor writing speed. The real writing speed drops to 50mb/s if you try to transfer data more than you can cache. That's actually lower than the average writing speed of a 7200 rpm HDD. So there is no point of getting this drive instead of cheaper HDD.

    http://www.pcworld.com/article/3000913/storage/crucial-bx200…

  • OCZ 150 series are much better SSDs with only $15 more… Samsung EVO 850 series are good, but they're expensive.

  • The Samsung 750 evo seems to be good, much better value here than in the us so yo udon't see mcuh reviews for it.
