I think this is a good deal for a business grade desktop from Dell

i7-6700
256gb M.2 PCIe NVME SSD
Windows 10 Pro (Better than Home version and upgrade in customise button)
8GB DDR4
Three years pro support (worth it imo and onsite I believe)
Cheap chiclet keyboard and mouse

Notes:

Buy a seagate 2TB hdd.
Try to find identical ram outside and add 8gb more for 16gb total.
Small and tiny which is good for smaller desks.

      • Eh.. Deal's not amazing.. the i5-6600 version of this with 8GB/256GB SSD is only $700 on the Outlet

        • Correct me if i'm wrong but these only accept half size graphics cards.

        • @Unbreakable: Correct, the SFF's are low profile with no PCI-E connectors.

        • For new one…you are dreaming with this price

Seems stupid to pay for M.2 PCIe NVME SSD and an i7 for a machine that is meant to sit on someones desk while they use MS Office, Outlook and browse the web doing business activities.

In general I agree, however it would make for a good programmer's machine.

        Who compiles code locally?

        • Someone who doesn't want to wait for a network?

        • +2

          The vast majority of programmers?

        • @CarbonTwelve: depends on your access to a hyper-vised cluster and the code ;)

        • @Lukian: Yes it does, however, like I said, the vast majority of programmers are still compiling locally.

  • Wow I didn't realise these models were so expensive! We get government pricing for this spec for well under $1000 shipped. Still, not a bad price for someone who might want to splurge on a home PC.

Nobody cares about their inflated rrp. Without a decent graphics card this deal is only so-so. Not a bargain.

  • Big discount, but if you want a real bargain, look at an ex-lease Optiplex, and add a new SSD.

    • Yeah I'm trying to do that for a dirt cheap optiplex I got, but they have those damn slimline sata power cables for where I need to connect my SSD. Waiting on the slow train from china for an adaptor…Dell really don't make it easy.

    Overpriced

As a comparison for a DIY PC: http://www.logicalincrements.com/
    GTX 1060 $440
    i5 6400 $260
    212 Evo $54
    ASUS Z170-P $185
    8GB DDR4 $50
    1TB HDD $65
    240GB SSD $90
    SeaSonic M12II $120
    Rosewill R5 $110

    Total: $1389

    • Big, ugly, noisy compared to the Dell, no OS, but has a fancy 3D graphics card.

It does show how expensive the Dells are normally. I'm willing to pay a bit of a premium for their small, quiet cases and cooling systems, but not $1000.

      • Each to their own I guess. I'd prefer a system that's well matched to my needs that can be upgraded. If i just wanted a small quiet machine for internet browsing I'd get an iPad…
