About Wagyu Biltong

Wagyu has a unique, incredible taste, and has higher 'marbling' (intramuscular fat) than other beef.
According to the Australian Wagyu Assocation:

  • Wagyu offers the finest quality of beef available in Australia. Highly prized for the exceptional meat quality,
  • Wagyu genetics yield a beef higher in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids than typical beef.
  • Wagyu beef contains more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) – Omega 6 per gram than any other foodstuff – 30 per cent more than other beef breeds. CLA is a fatty acid with potent anti-carcinogenic properties, as well as being an anti-inflammatory agent.
  • Wagyu is high in monounsaturated fats and with the ratio of monounsaturated to saturated fats of 2:1

What's 'Biltong'?

Biltong is jerky, but air-dried instead of cooked, made from 100% Aussie Beef Topside, preservative-free.
Low in fat and super-high in protein, it's the perfect any-time snack.
Unlike normal jerky, our biltong is also available in moist varieties, which are easier to chew, and also dry varieties, which are a bit more tough.

The Traditional Biltong is available in 'moist' or 'dry' and is less tough than jerky. Flavours:

The Biltong/Jerky Snapsticks are a bit more tough. Flavours:

Biltong.com.au is probably Australia's most popular online retailer of biltong, trading since 2007.
We're a small business, and appreciate your support.

It does have a darker colour, not quite sure the pic there does it justice.
I'll try take some more pics to give you an idea.

Bought some Wagyu Biltong to try, the ones I purchased last time was pretty good.

    Cheers.

      Cheers, got them this morning!

  • Can you order chilli garlic in wagyu or only original flavour

    • We have plenty of Original ready to go,
but for Chilli Garlic you'd have to wait about a week for dispatch.
If you're happy to proceed, just order the normal wagyu and add a note, and be prepared to wait :)

      • Yes, I also want the chilli garlic flavour, will order tonight after work. When do you have Wagyu jerky (napsticks)? Thanks.

    Is all the beef grass-fed?

    • +7

I put fresh grass in the fridge for my beef, but it doesn't seem to eat any.

      • -1

Dont give up ur day job as you arent going to make it as a comedian…..

        • +1

LOL. I don't believe they are grass fed - grass fed beef is nice and lean. They are fed high carb diets. I'm not sure if there is some regulation on what that is to be called wagyu, but I believe they are fed proper "grain" like corn, as opposed to a lot of "grain" fed animals actually being fed pelletised grains of ground up carcasses etc (look up how mad cows disease spread), which is why I try avoiding non non grass fed beef.

      • Natural light is a must for your grass, otherwise the beef won't be grass fed.

    Cheap as! Cheers guys

  • Is the discount this time not as good as the previous ones? Seems like the previous sale is at around $45/kg price mark

    • You are right. The discount they are offering is pretty ordinary.

Classic with discount is now $52. Previous OzBargain deals were $45. (for 1 kg).

Come on OP, please do better…
      This is OzBargain!!

Our main bargain here is the Wagyu biltong, which can fetch prices of over $150.0 per kg, is 20.8% off our already lower $80.00 per kg, down to $63.35.

However, it's clear this bargain hasn't received as much traction as previous times. We'll try do better next time.

Would love to give it a go since Geronimo jerky went AWOL but seems like a pretty big outlay for a product I might not like. Any chance of a better deal to get us hooked OP?

    • +6

      That's not really fair:
Geronimo Jerky's bargain only seems good because their prices are high in the first place:
Their 60g bags worked out to $150.00 per kg.
They then offer 50% off = $75.00 per kg.
Our closest product, Biltong Snapsticks, normally costs $70.00 per kg.
With this 12% discount it comes down to $61.60 per kg.
Or if you go with our moist biltong our price is $50.15 down from $56.99

In a sense, our product is already a bargain, even before we offer a discount!

We could create a whole new website where we sell our biltong for twice the price, and then come to OzBargain and offer a 55% discount and it would be the same as what we're offering now :)

      • +1

I agree - the Geronimo prices aren't even in the same ballpark. Not to mention a lot of those offers are for these over packaged 50g packs, and the per kg pricing is all over the place depending on the size. I have tried their jerky, but I can't say I would try it again even if it was the same price.

Biltong I believe is better for you, being non-cooked, and not full of a lot of artificial preservatives (not that I'm saying geronimo is).

        Great response. Ordering now :)

Now that it all makes sense I've ordered 2kg of chilli garlic snap sticks. Fingers crossed it's as delicious as the description sounds. Thanks again:)

Put it this way Bellpop. I tried for the 1st time a year or 2 ago and now order 3 -4 kgs of Biltong at a time. All of our friends who try it for the 1st time love it..

Once you start snacking on it.. its hard to put down. Its addictive!

This is the Original Biltong im talking about..haven't tried the wagyu yet.

      • +1

I think the wagyu wouldn't be a good comparison to jerky though, with the intended fat marbling, even for the dry grade. The moist grades are more prosciutto like. I personally like the dry and stickies. I don't mind the medium. I won't eat the fat though. It it pretty rare on the dry and stokkies which is great. At least for biltong to go it is nice and lean. Some other makers I tried were too fatty.

If you are looking for as close to jerky, stokkies, or even the dry grade biltong.

        • Hey rep: Can you put the nutritional info on the Wagyu page? It's there for the other products, so I don't see why not!

  • Just got a pack of the wagyu jerky and it's very meh/10, would not buy again.

    Taste: 6.5/10
Flavour is okay, however, it'll really benefit from some chilli/garlic flakes or smokey bbq flavour. The wagyu flavour is non-existent.

    Texture: fine/10
    It's a bit more moist.

    Value: 7/10
Can't really complain at this price, even though I consider this no different from regular jerky. Would rather get regular jerky with some more interesting flavours.

Doesn't look anything like the picture, looks just like regular jerky.

    • I think my comment above (and on previous biltong offers) went through the comparisons a bit more. If you want jerky like, stokkies, or dry grade regular biltong. The soft texture and fat etc is intentionally how it is supposed to be.

      • Yup. Wasn't complaining about the soft texture and fat. More so disappointed (okay I did increase my expectations a little bit because of the wagyu) because I expected more out of the 'wagyu' name. This is comparable to the wagyu you'd get at regular fast food chains or low quality restaurant 'wagyu'. That is, 'wagyu' does not come to your mind when you are eating this.

I would say we'd be lucky if this was 4+ wagyu that was used.

After eating this, I instantly bought some more jerky but with flavouring.

        • Ah right. Yeah, I'm a bit funny with stuff like meat. I'm not wanting to detract from this product or wagyu in general, but fatty marbled meats of any kind really is not my thing. I like it lean. It is just a personal preference thing. If I was getting moist variety and eating it really thinly sliced like proscuitto, or Italian smallgoods, I might have it on occasion, you know like on a platter with cheese, olives, and other snacks.

        • +1

          @Mobe1969:

For jerky, I definitely agree and I do agree with your comparison with proscuitto. This is definitely something I could add to a cheeseboard.

        • @mrblu: Yes, exactly! That was the term I was trying to think of…

It is pretty great that there is actually such a nice variation of the same thing from one end of the scale (proscuitto like) to the other (jerky like).

  • Ordered 2KG of the chilli garlic 'stockies'. opened the first bag and it absolutely stinks, kind of like raw steak that has gone off. is this what the other 3 bags i have bought are likely to smell like? should i post them back OP? it is really a putrid smell.

    • Dear Bellpop,

I believe I have tried to address this complaint by email before this repeat of the complaint here on OzBargain.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience, and have tried to clarify whether the problem exists in all 4 bags that you received, and have asked you to open up another bag to check.
We also offered to give you a shipping label to send it back, for free, to allow us to properly inspect.
We have also offered you a free refund or replacement on that bag.
We also advised you that occasionally, upon immediately opening a bag, it can smell a bit foul as the CO2 and other gases that have built up in the vacuum bag escape, but then after a moment or 2, it smells OK. We wanted to eliminate this as a possible cause of what happened, and appreciate your clarification. Based on your followup comment, we can now be more certain that this possibility can be eliminated.

Your satisfaction is very important to us, and we really share your concern if one of the bags smells bad. I am keen to learn if any of the other bags have the same problem.

      Thanks

Have you given them a chance to sort out the issue before whinging on a public forum?

I had an issue with an order from these guys and was very impressed with how they dealt with it. No business can get it right 100% of the time and it's how they resolve problems that sets the good from the bad.

Rep seems interested and responsive to your concern. Hope you get back to them.

      • +3

Hi, great point. I've replied via email. They were great. Was just the one bag. Opened another and it's perfect. Great product and service!

      • Thank you very much for your concern, at first the comment on OzBargain gave me some pause,
however I'm pleased to say we seem to have sorted out the issue amicably, customer has otherwise been great to deal with, and in fact we are quite grateful that he seems to be happy now. We were obviously a tad stressed that the particular problem even occurred in the first place as it hasn't happened before. However, as you say, it's impossible to get right 100% of the time. I am still interested in investigating the product so we can ensure it doesn't happen again. :)

        • Thanks guys. Amazing service :)

  • Just got my 1kg Wagyu today (chilli garlic flavour), thanks for quick shipping. The biltong is excellent, will order more when you offer the discount again.
