  • Screen resolution is dismal.

    • +4

It's pretty standard for a 24" monitor, not dismal. May be if it is a 27" monitor.

      • +2

It may be standard, but he has a point.
My old 10" tablet has more pixels, my 5" phone has more pixels. Neither were expensive.
This Dell costs twice as much as a standard 24" monitor, and you can see the pixels.
Why is 1920x1080 still the standard for desktop monitors after all these years? And why can't an "ultrasharp" do any better?

        • Because the text gets painfully small unless you scale it, and so on. Numbers are far from the only thing you should be looking at.

        • -1

          manic:

Are you aiming for "Retina" type resolution on your computer monitor?

Say for example your 5" phone has Full HD (1920x1080) resolution. A 24" monitor which is nearly 5 times wider and 5 times taller in size would need approximately 25 times as many pixels as Full HD to maintain the same pixel density as your phone. So that's 9600x5400 resolution in that 24" monitor!!! Now… I wonder what type of graphics card(s) is required to drive this ultra-ultra-high res monitor? Especially when people want to game on it, the new Nvidia GTX 1080 graphics card is struggling to maintain 60Hz in a 4K monitor now, do gamers need to invest in some $10,000 super graphics card to play games in this 9600x5400 monitor at 60Hz?

        • @edfoo:
FHD is OK. QHD would be noticeably smoother. Any more than UHD is pointless.

        • @manic: UHD on a 24" monitor still won't look as sharp as 1080p on a 5" phone ( assuming you are viewing from the same distance), so there will be someone going to whinge about the comparison.

The point is 1080p on a 24" monitor is perfectly fine because most people sit a bit further back than when viewing their phones, so the pixels are not so noticeable.

        • @edfoo:

assuming you are viewing from the same distance

Kind of a bad assumption, no? More like 20cm for phone, and 50cm for monitor. Display texture is visible on the monitor.
The only reason I can see for more than FHD on a phone is using it in a VR headset. You need QHD for 720p 3D then, and it looks awesome :)

      • My 16 inch laptop has the same resolution.

  • +6

This is still expensive even with 20% discount, 24 inch, ips display,1080 and 6ms response time with 60hz is not exactly cheap or even cost vaule wise

    • +4

I think a lot of people don't quite understand why people buy dells

You aren't getting it for the fastest response time
you aren't getting it for the best bang for your buckmonitor
Stick with Acer/Asus/Benq etc if thats what you want

But if you want a monitor with good build quality, excellent stand, connectivity, and colour reproduction etc - Dell is really quite good.

      • +2

I suppose dell does have better quality, but still $300, thats still a bit steep

        • If you just want a no frills monitor for gaming/general use, sure.

I've owned plenty of <$200 Samsung/Benq/Acer monitors in the past and while they're bang for buck, I've always found the colours generally terrible, and their stands are absolutely garbage. My old Samsung 21" from 5-6 years ago the monitor stand literally snapped when I knocked it over trying to adjust the tilt. You get what you pay for. I had to pay like $80 to get a VESA compatible stand so I could continue using that monitor, and even then the stand is no where near as good as the Dell's.'

FWIW this is an meh deal. Its a good monitor, but I got my Dell U2515H over a year ago for around $400, and that thing is 25" and 1440p.

        Thanks for the belly laugh.

Yes, people, for the love of god this is 1080p, just like the vast majority of 24" monitors out there. If you're not interested in that resolution, look elsewhere instead of complaining about it - it's not going to change anything. Every goddamn thread :@

  • At the time of posting, I am using this model U2417H. I am happy about its thin bezel and the flexibility to adjust the screen however you want.

One thing am not sure if you purchase it from futu online, do you still get Dell premium service - 3 years panel warranty.

I didn't expect so many stupid "It's only FHD" posts on here, TBH.

    • +1

I did expect those same idiots to downvote the comment, though.

  • it initially got me excited and then realised it was a 24" not the 27" i am after.

    • +1

Move it 10% closer and the 24" will look like a 27".
      Trivial difference.

      • oh yea. move even closer and get a 19 inch, why waste money

        • Except 19" monitors usually have far fewer pixels. And 19-24 is a much bigger jump.

The money is small though - not long ago a 19" Trinitron cost a month's wages.

      • +1

Wow man! Thanks for the advice! I just strapped my monitor to my head and now it's the same as a 65" TV! Thanks!

  • Considering Dell themselves sell this monitor for $429 and the best they could do is $387 after chat. $319.20 delivered is still a very good price for this premium monitor. At a price even Dell direct can't match.

Considering there is also a wifi version of this monitor as well that retails for $699. Definitely can't justify that price for the extra features.

I'm still using an old 20.1" 1680x1050 16:10 monitor that I've always wanted to upgrade. So a 24" upgrade would suit me. As viewing 24" is ok for most people who sit close to the screen or have limited desk space. Bigger screens are for those with larger desks and sit further away.
