Optus Mobile: Unmetered Netflix, Presto on Postpaid Plans ($10 on Lower Plans/Free on Higher Plans), Spotify Unmetered for All

2640

Looks like this might be in response to Telstra's unmetered Apple Music.

Streaming Music services: Spotify, Pandora, Google Play Music and IHeartRadio are now unmetered on Optus Post-paid plans (was previously only available on Prepaid)
Netflix and Presto are unmetered on the high end $100 and $120 plans, or a $10 addition to the $40/$65/$85 plans.

Can't seem to find anything official on the Optus website as yet. As per the other deal, may not be considered a true bargain, but could save you some money on data charges!

Edit: Offical FAQ from Optus site (thanks Goodfellha)

@Alzori: Thankyou I always get them confused, and ah okay, thanks for clarifying !

    • Certainly looks like it because in the FAQ for Netflix it states that video from Netflix and Presto will be streamed in standard definition up to 1.5Mbps.

    • Why do they need to redirect anything? Just cap the speed from the Netflix servers.

      • I assume it would be to cache previously watched videos. Save on data transfer between Optus and Netflix.

  • Well looks like it's time to cancel Apple Music

  • +2

Does this filter down to sub-carriers like Vaya?

    • I'd like to know this too, but I'm guessing not. I think the last promo with Spotify didn't apply to me (I'm on Jeenee)

    • Most likely not.

      • Looks like a reason to consider getting out of Vaya, since most of my gb's go to Pandora.

  • +3

does anyone know where the Entertainment section is, in My account?

    • +1

Same problem here man, can't find the entertainment section when I logon to the My Dashboard. I have the Yes Optus app on android which has the Entertainment section but no mention of unmetered netflix/miusic streaming etc.

    • +1

Don't think it's been added yet

      • +8

It will be ready in 24hrs. I have already asked Optus support.

    • hey guys, entertainment is up on the dash now. I cant get pass the selection screen though….comes up with an error.

'We are currently experiencing some technical difficulties. Please try again soon!'

let me know if any of you get through

      • I'm getting the exact same thing. Let me know if you get through.

        • Just spoke to online chat…if yiou are on an eligible plan, you dont have to do anything. when it's live, you will recieve a text

  • Argh not avail for sim only :-(

    • That answers my question

    • Has this been confirmed by an Optus rep or their FAQ section? Thanks

      • +1

        Their FAQ section

    • +1

      Wtf? That's crap.
I'm on a $40 sim only mobile plan, I assumed I'd get this. Even prepaid has it

      • +5

I just talked to an agent and the agent asked for my mobile no, name and DOB. After checking, he confirmed that I am getting this unmetered service. I'm on the $40 12 month plan.

        • I'm on the same plan. Hope to get the unmetered Service also.

        • I hope it's for plans on $50 for 15GB too.

        • don't you need to pay the extra $10 for Netflix/Presto?

        • @zeckem:

Yeah you'd still need to. I don't have a subscription with those anyway, unmetered Spotify is all I need.

        • Do you only have a Sim only plan, not phone + sim plan?

        • @starburstyellow: Yes sim only, from the fenzy deal last May.

        • @jobski: I think the same deal has popped up only a few more times since. I bought it in may, bought one for my wife a month ago. Just bought another for my parents as it's on right now.

    • +1

Hey the optus website has been updated now, it's definately on the sim only plans.

      http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobilephones/SimBYO

      • only for music, not mobile tv.

        • sorry yes only for music….based on what @Chromium wrote, it was about music

  • I'm on a $40 sim only mobile plan, I assumed I'd get this. Even prepaid has it. Has it been confirmed that sim only doesn't qualify?
I guess they're trying to get people to buy overpriced phones

    • Looks like we get music streaming but not the option of $10 extra for Netflix/presto

      • Cool. I'm only really after the Google music

  • +2

Calling user @landog, hoping for a response for all of us new OVO members :)

  • This will be great using android auto and google play music in the car. Stream as much as I want without using up data.

  • Does vodafone have anything unmetered?

  • What does the video quality look like on my device?

Video will be streamed in standard definition up to 1.5Mbps. This speed is for a single stream on mobile and tablet devices, so you enjoy your favourite movies and TV shows when you’re out and about. You might get some pixilation for the first 30 seconds or so of your stream as your app calibrates to the network. To get the best experience, we recommend you use the Netflix and Presto mobile and tablet apps and set the quality to “Auto”.

    • So yeah, those who are considering to use this instead of your ADSL, the speed will be capped at 1.5mbps.

    • That's lousy!

  • Has anyone confirmed if this is only for the plans listed or for any plan, including sim only plans?

  • This would be amazing. I work the graveyard shift and am free to entertain myself having Netflix on my optus tablet would be amazing

  • I dunno if I got lucky. But I just joined Optus cable (standard plan) and get maxed out upload/download 24/7 if I want. It is fast as.

  • I stream netflix on my s5 and with my 11gb data i get to watch tv shows throughout the day at work.

Ive set the rate at 1gb for 4 hours but really when watching archer you dont need it HD.

The only problem is that aus netflix has serious shite with quality stuff.

Gonna watch making a murderer next month.

    • +1

all I read was "I watch four hours of netflix at work" interesting job… wish I could say the same… ^_*

  • Curious if this will work with my $5 addon data share sims or with the $0 sim only plan which was offered not long ago.

    • That's Telstra…

      • And optus but optus doesn't charge a monthly fee only once off for the sim.

    • Read the FAQ. Will only work on the sim it is activated on

  • +8

I was able to get to Entertainment by going to, https://www.optus.com.au/customercentre/myaccount/entertainm… , directly
I have added it with no issues as I see the confirmation, "Thanks for adding music streaming." and have received a text message confirming this. Hope this helps out other inpatient people.

    • Actually i can now see the link in the tabs up top.

I can only add it to my main account no other shared sim nor my $0 sim plan.

      Only music streaming not TV.

      • Same, just tried it. I've got my wife on the $40/10Gb plan and myself on the $30 plan and I've been able to add it for both.

    • Legend! Cheers mate works for me got the text.

    • Thanks.

For those reading. I'm on the sim only, $40/10gb 12 month plan, and have activated music streaming.

  • Is this for current or new plans only?

    • Im on an old plan and it's active for me.

      • Thanks. also looks like its for $100 plans and above.

  • +1

Does the streaming include downloading Spotify playlists for offline listening?

    • +1

      Why would you need to?

      • +1

Can't always get mobile reception everywhere.

  • +1
  • You can't enable both at one time, as you have to wait until one option has propagated.

$10 for unmetered Netflix is decent as it will now make my train journeys more tolerable.

  • Argh! I'm on the $50 a month sim only plan with 15GB and I can't seem to activate it. Argh!

    • Same, $60 SIM Only here and received this:

      Add-On Not Available
Hi, unfortunately you can't add Mobile TV streaming to your current plan because it's not eligible.

Upgrade to a phone on an eligible plan.

      :'(

I wanted the Netflix one the most

      • Me too.
        $60 SIM only with 10GB a month
        * $20 off a month 12-month contract.

Effectively paying $30/month with broadband bundle offer…

No love for tv, but I have it for music streaming. :/ I would have loved to use it with Netflix.

      • +1

Unmetered Netflix is onlt on 100+ plans i believe

    • FROM OPTUS FAQ

Is Mobile TV streaming available on SIM Only plans?

No, data free Mobile TV streaming isn’t available on postpaid mobile SIM Only or mobile broadband SIM Only plans.

      • Yes but Music streaming should still at least be available. Considering people on the $40 a month sim only plans managed to activate it.

        • Yeah, music streaming is.

        • +1

@rorymeister: Not on my account. It's coming up with 'Technical difficulties'

  • This deal is a bad idea from Optus. I doubt the Optus network Will be to handle all this free streaming. I recently signed on the $40 SIM and I am worried that my data feed quality will now suffer.

    • For me. This is excellent news (if the network holds up - it's not Telstra so it should).
I have a Subaru that has the Pandora app built into the head unit. Never used it because of data charges, but will be now.

  • In the FAQ it says if you use your account as a hotspot and watch Netflix on another device then it will count to your mobile data.

How can optus tell if you are creating a hotspot and viewing Netflix on another device?

  • +1

Can confirm I was able to add music streaming but not TV on the $50 12M SIM only plan (11GB data).

  • Just tried on my $0 SIM only plan it's not eligible. Oh well.

  • So if I join Optus today on $40 plan10gb data
Netflix will be streamed for free?

    • don't think so. read the other comments.

    • Music steaming only.

  • Good deal but we've run out of stuff to watch on Netflix

  • On a $40 month sim only plan click on music steaming nothing happens :(
    https://www.optus.com.au/customercentre/myaccount/entertainm…

    • activated then an it works for some reasons didt work before, now waiting for the sms so i can start using it :)

  • +1

I just activated music streaming on my $40 sim only plan

  • just activated music streaming on my $60 BYO sim plan minus $20 per month

so $40 per month for free EPL and free Google Music . All optus needs now is unmetered NBA League Pass :)

    • +1

Free streaming you mean? Still gotta pony up $11.99 per mth for Google Music

  • I read that the recommended connection speed for streaming Netflix SD is 3.0Mbps, but Optus FAQ says it will do it up to 1.5Mbps, so is this gonna be a problem?
I really like the idea of being able to stream data free but if it's going to be so laggy and buffering all the time on my mobile then I'm not sure it's worth the extra costs

    • I assume the quality will be lower than Netflix's 3.0Mbps stream, and you'll still get a steady stream with Netflix in 1.5Mbps, just at a lower bitrate than what Netflix recommend.

      • Oh ok that's good to know

  • Sorry I'm on a phone and hard to search…
Is this applicable to business plans? I have a work phone, would love to assume it's unmetered but can't take the risk.
Not really a good look asking my boss if I can use it for Netflix lol

    • Yeah it works in business plans

  • It seems that Optus doesn't like Mobile Broadband users. I am on iPad plan.

Mine 2.5G plan is not working with this deal - I even have no chance of paying extras to make it work.

    • Upgrade to the 4gb plan for an extra $5pm to get the music streaming included.

  • +4

    wish it was unmetered youtube

  • Keeps stuttering every 2 minutes as it keeps disconnecting from Spotify. Bit annoying

  • I am eligible on the $40 post paid deal. My only problem? I use none of these services on my mobile device.

  • Has anyone tried the unmetered Netflix? (Using the $10 monthly charge)

Any feedback on quality and continuation whilst watching?

  • hmm might be time to switch to Optus from Live Connected then. Free spotify would be great, although my car doesn't have bluetooth so probably wouldn't really use it much.

  • +1

I didn't realise this, but you need to follow this to make this work.

Existing Optus Customer – If you already have an eligible plan, you’ll need to activate data free music streaming before you can start streaming music from the participating streaming apps data free. Login to My Account, and click on the Entertainment section to activate data free music streaming.

  • I've enabled music streaming, however my usage is being shown under insights.

    Anyone else having this issue?

  • Have read through above discission twice and still am unclear. If I sign up for a prepaid with optus i can get the unmetered Spotify, but is there a way to also pay the $10 extra and get unmetered Netflix? I'd be wanting to max spend say $50 a month, eg. $40 + $10 for Netflix. Have googled but clarity seems difficult..thx heaps
