Optus $65 Per Month for Galaxy S7 on 24 Mths Plan. Save $480. 7GB Data / Unlimited Talk and Text / up to 300 International Mins

1250

Looks like optus are offering this deal again.

Awesome value at $65 per month.

Combined with this deal for free music streaming (or add another $10p/m for unmetered netflix/presto streaming) and you're laughing.

EDIT: students may also be eligible for a further 10% off! apparently it is calculated on the original $85 value, potentially bringing the monthly cost down to just $56.50! thanks fidelio and krazynayba.

I got mine last time deal was on.

Don't forget unidays discount if you eligible for additional 10% off

  • Great deal. Great phone. Also got it last time

  • Where did you get the $65 for 7GB with S7 from? The 7GB deal is showing as $85 for me.

      • O, I see. There's a $20 discount included. Kinda confusing the way they put it on the detailed deal page. Ta

        • They bill you like that too, an $85 plan with a $20 credit each month. I guess it works better in their system that way.

        • +1

@littleannie: Confusing as heck! I am mainly on prepaid, but I was on one of their discounted deals for a couple of months back last year and it confused me whenever I had to read the bill. Just show what the customers owes and get rid off the rest of the unneeded info.

        • @littleannie: Optus like confusing. Ive hated their billing system so far. Wont be renewing with them, not that I expect others to be better.

  • me too, got when one day before ends, looks like they are pushing s7/edge before iphone7 come. anyway, good deal. not bad phone.

  • Any UNIDAYS discount lying around peeps? Might sign up to this plan.

  • +3

I signed up for this last time it was on, and with the Unidays 10% discount it comes to $56.50 per month. You can do it in-store, just tell them you spoke to someone on the online chat. I think they just need to know it's actually possible for them to add the student discount as well as the $20 a month discount off the original $85. Also everything will initially appear as $85 but the deductions will come off the first bill.

    • +1

Optus apply the 10% student discount to the $85 before applying the $20p/m discount? Even better! Will update post.

      • +1

That's right, at least that's what my first bill says anyway :)

    • +2

everything will initially appear as $85

It's that part where they always get me. If they're offering a discount on a deal, why don't they just simplify it for the customers? You have to jump through hoops and read lots of small/hidden prints to decipher it.

      • I assume it is to do with if you cancel the service, they can then charge you X times $85 per month rather than $65.

        • Hmm! That makes sense then, I guess.

  • +4

I am a uni student and have Unidays account, but I hardly use phones and have S5 that I bought less than a year ago from that famous HN deal last Christmas day, so not sure if I wanna pull the trigger on this. Yeah, I am that other tightarse guy. :)

  • +1

Is it possible to add the Unidays discount after you've got the plan or do you have to do it during the checkout process?

    • +1

Can be added afterwards in store as well

  • +2

I got this last time and I've been very happy with the phone. The camera is AMAZING and the phone is very snappy. I love the always on clock display, oh and the fast charging is fantastic.
I thought 7gb was total overkill but I've managed to use 6.5gb in my first month with 2 days to go.

  • It says you can upgrade to a new phone after 12 months for $99.

So does that mean you go get the S8 on same plan and price

    • And no further lock in contract, other than the original 24month plan?

    • +1

From Terms and Conditions: "This plan includes the option of New Phone Trade Up. So after 12 months on this plan, you have the option to pay a one-off fee of $99,return your original mobile handset to Optus in good working order and purchase a new mobile handset on a new 24 month plan. You will also need to sign a separate agreement with our second hand vendor to transfer ownership of your original mobile handset. Alternatively, if you wish to keep your original mobile handset, you can simply pay out the full remaining cost of your mobile handset, including any monthly handset credit that Optus was going to cover. You are under no obligation to use the New Phone Trade Up option and this option is only available to new and recontracting customers from 11 March 2016. For further information please go to optus.com.au/newphonetradeup"

    • +1

I just did online chat and any time after 12 months you can do the $99 trade in if a nice deal like this comes along and you want the latest phone.

Only thing is you have to get whatever the current plan is, you can not get the same plan you are on.

      • Could be a good thing though as mobile plans are bound to get cheaper with more GB I would say.

  • Does anyone know if there would be any cancellation fees if I were to go onto this plan? I'm currently on a 12 Month sim only plan with 7 months left to run.

    • +2

When I was speaking to online chat he was going to transfer me from my current Sim only plan to this new plan with no charge.

I have the 10GB plan at the moment so will be losing 3 GB data.

Currently paying $30/month for $10GB so with this new plan will be paying $25/month extra to get S7 but losing 3GB data :o

      • And what kind of phone do you have now? If you have a decent phone then losing that extra data, plus paying $25 more per month for S7 isn't worth it, I think. Do the math and compare the pros and cons. If I were you and was on the plan you're on now, I wouldn't go anywhere near this.

        • I currently have a Nokia 1020 :D

        • @GerrardLFC: Wait! Isn't that the one with insane 41 megapixel camera? Damn! I have Samsung S5, you wanna swap? lol

      • How are you getting $30 for 10gb with Optus? :o

      • How can u get 10gb in $30 in Optus?

        • You need to have Optus home broadband to get $10 off.

      • "GerrardLFC"
Good comment, well and clearly explained.

    • Im in the same position as you.

Im on an Optus Sim only plan, $60/month with 10gb - but I only pay $40

wondering if its worth paying $25 extra but losing 3gb as month…….going from a Huawei P8 to the S7

      • Virgin sim.only 10gb per month. $40
(Usually 60 plan+4gb free) plus 1gb extra till Nov

LG G4 just died, also thinking this for.25 more. But lose 3 gb. +bonus

        • The advantage of this plan is if I sign up for it now it is like 5 months since the S7 was released. So in 12 months time when I have the option to upgrade to new handset and plan for $99 there should be similar deals on the new S8 as it will be around 5-6 months old.

I guess I can live with the 3GB less per month and also on my current plan the EPL is free for this year but then $15/month next year while this new plan is free EPL for life of the plan.

        • @GerrardLFC:
10extra for unmetered Netflix, free Spotify,Pandora etc

        • Actually 16.50 as it looks like I can use the unidays code……..

  • Wish they would throw this discount up to the 15gb plan.

    • agree :)

  • Damn, I just purchased S7 Edge on the $75/month plan ($66.5 after student discount) few days ago. :(

  • Do s anyone have a Unitas discount code? That would be amazing

  • +1

Only extra $5 for gear fit 2

    • I can't seem to find that. Would you mind linking it?

      • +1

It is a separate bundle. Keep scrolling and you will see galaxy s7 + gear fit 2

    • Every month for 24 months

What's the cost of the Gear Fit 2 outright?

  • -1

This student thing. Is there a way to be one without being one?? Or is there a cheap way to be a student?

    • +2

Yeah quit your full time job and become a fulltime student

    • +2

I am a student and can't get it - because my course doesn't give you an email address or an ID card with an end date on it, Unidays won't verify me.

      • I have the same issue. I'm using an RTO for a self paced Cert III. I looked into it. It costs $40 a year for a .edu.au domain name. I don't know the verification process for the provider though… And they have to want to do it.

  • +5

Telstra are now the only ones not to offer this phone at a reasonable price. They refuse to price match which, in my mind, oozes arrogance.

  • +1

These good deals are bad news for existing Optus customers. In my area (15 mins out of Melb CBD), the ping time is quite high. Doesn't feel like I am on a 4G Plus connection, even those I am in a 4G Plus area.

  • This teaches me not to get the Note 7 at launch. Would hate to be paying more for 2 years.

  • -2

Is it possible to get student discount if you aren't a student..? Probably a stupid question but figured I'd ask you ozbargainers

    • I think not…the Unidays website takes you to your own uni website/portal to authenticate.

      • thanks just wanted to check :)

  • +1

I got Vodafone to price match this deal last month to data share with the Mrs (her phone is on contract with Vodafone). They effectively gave me their $80 for $65 with 7GB data and total 1,300 international minutes. May be useful to you depending on your needs.

Please note the phones will need to be under the same account to data share.

    • Will Vodafone match quota free music / netflix streaming?

      • I dont think they have that set up

  • Is it possible to get student discount if you are a high school student ? Thanks !

    • Our local high schools are all listed on the unidays website.

I'm not affiliated with them, but I noticed all 4 high schools close by are listed

      The TAFE however……is not

      • Tried and worked. Ordered a black one and hopefully will receive it soon.

        • 56.50 month?

Does the unidays 10% discount work on the Netflix add on, ie $9

What about the $5 gear fit 2(4.50)

        • @albanyson:

          Total monthly amount: $56.5

Minimum total cost over 24 months: $1356

Didn't add any other things . Sorry

  • +1

After a conversation with Telstra, the best they can offer is the Galaxy S7 on the L plan for $75 a month or the M plan for $65 a month.
I went with Telstra in the end. They offered the M Plan with an extra 1gb data for $65 a month. Its only because I need them as I travel regionally a fair bit.

  • Good deal. Also there's free EPL thrown in. So what happens after 24 months ?

Just curious so what happens after 24 months, we get to keep the phone ?

    • I thought the Free EPL ended yesterday i.e. 22nd August?

      • As at last night, it said free EPL for life of the plan as long as Optus has the rights, with no expiration date. Lower plans said you got a year, then $15 per month, and it expired on 22/8.

That part now appears to have disappeared.

Edit: Scrap that, it seems to change depending on which link you go through, should still be included.

  • I'm on an existing Optus $65 plan, and I only get 4GB of data. Is there potential for me to get this bumped up to 7GB by speaking to them?

    • There is only one way to find out…

      • just checked, nope.

        • Even paying the $50 charge?

(For changing plans) same or lower priced. Free for a higher priced plan

  • So tempted..

Currently on virgin 10gb for $40 using a lg g4…

    Good find op.

    Decisions decisions.

    • Haha Im in same boat. on $40 10Gb but wife is on $20 for 2.2Gb (including extra 1gb for Guvera). Thinking of switching to Optus to pool data + free google. Only reason why im holding back is that Optus does not include international calls for a country I wish to call occasionally. Where as Virgin its included in the $300 quota.

    • 10gb with g4 is still a good deal now though

      • G4 was bought outright. Already had boatload fixed so there is something less to worry about.

        • How long did that take? Mine happened last night!!

        • @albanyson: Not fast sadly.

I was without it for like 7-8 weeks.

  • Any chance they will do similar deal on 3.5GB plan? For me personally 7GB would be wasted and I'm thinking switching to Optus mobile so I can get $20 discount for cable internet.

  • IMO Woolworth deal is still better

    https://mobile.woolworths.com.au/

    S7 for $70 a month and a fee $100 eGiftcard which equates to around $65 a month.
8GB data on the Telstra network

    • +1

Yes but on Optus, it gives quota free Music streaming and Netflix (extra $10 per month).

I personally use most of my data, streaming Google Music so IMO this Optus deal is better.

  • +1

Can confirm that the unidays code works, you just have to remember to order through the "Optus Student Hub". It does not immediately show the $65 deal but when the $85 is added to the basket it shows up and then you can add your code. $56.50 - $1356 for 24 months. Also makes it a great deal if you were to sell the phone and get 7gb for $23/month (if sold for $800).

Missed out on this last time by relying on Optus chat but hopefully its all good this time. Great deal

    • Hey got a stupid question, but figured id ask anyways. I have a friend whos currently in uni i.e. has a edu.au email address. But don't plan to caplitaize on this deal.

Would it be possible for her to use her login etc to get through unidays website, but have me as the Optus user? And no, I don't have the same name as her. :/

      • +1

I think so mate. My wife is the actual student but I put everything in my name as it was easier since im working etc to get approved but it went through perfectly. Also to note she is only a student until the end of this year but im hoping the deal lasts for the whole 24 months.

        • In that case - if anyone has a code they would like to PM me it would be most appreciated… :-)

        • Thanks for confirming. Will give it a go soon.

        • The faqs on student hub say it is for the life of the plan.

    • 58.50?? Isn't is 10% discount?

Was offered first month free for in store sign up, based on 85 plan($85 discount)

Edit, read fully before before posting
      10%off 85 plan

  • Is there any bundle offers that can be applied to this? ( ie; Combine with existing home phone/broadband for $XX off ? )

    • I did see upon signing up, I think they were offering $20 a home broadband package but in all honesty im not 100% sure

  • I just signed up the $70 3.5GB s7 last friday! I have not even properly set up the new phone yet and now this deal happens.
Called and ask and there can't change my plan now. Damn!

  • Unfortunately for me, I just signed up to this plan through live chat as I have an active optus service. But I've been trying to figure out how the price is coming down to $56.50. 10% off $65 is $58.50????

I haven't been sent how much it's gonna cost total but this is the confirmation email I received
Thanks for chatting with us, your order for Samsung S7 Silver with $20 discount and 10% student offer has been processed successfully. The order number is xxxxxxxx. your mobile will be delivered within 2 -3 business days.

    • Reread the OP's post. Under Edit. i.e. 10% discount is applied to original price of $85

      • Oh wow, that is Awesome! Think it's about time I get some glasses!

  • +1

I got this deal last month at an Optus store. When making the contract, the staff said he'd input the original $85 price to their system and I would get $65 automatically. However, my 1st bill was still $85 and I had to take much effort with Optus chat support to get refunded $20 and correcting the plan to $65 from the 2nd bill.
It's a nice deal, but make sure you get what they advertise!

  • Would love to ask if anyone has a code they would like to PM me? Hugely appreciated !
