Does this apply to S7 Edge as well?

Edit: just checked Optus website and it doesn't. Bummer!

    • +11

I've got the s6 edge, I have never used the edge function at all. I find that it makes touching the screen on the edges more difficult as well and the amount of cases and screen protectors you can buy are limited. I wish i had just gotten the s6.

      • +1

My feelings exactly. That novelty didn't even last for a month. Still paying $5 extra per month.

On a side note. My battery dies in 5-10 mins after the phone reaches 15% battery level. Is this normal?

        • Sounds like a dud battery. I suffered for six months then had to take my S6 Edge in - they replaced it. Now I get a couple of days between charges compared to less than one day previously. The clincher was when it was fully charged, I powered off overnight, and the battery charge still fell to about 60%….

        • Kinda waiting for Note 7, I heard it's edge only display, I hope they sell the straight version too.

        • @fm:

          what about note 6

        • +1

@suicine94: They don't sell note 6, they will skip a number to keep it the same with the smaller phone

        • +1

@fm: Weird that they waited 6 generations before making that decision.

        • @lostn: yeah hahaha… 7 is good number though.

        • My battery started playing up i couldnt work out what it was but I took it into the store and they recalibrated the battery and then I gave it a factory reset and now its going great again. Still need to charge it every day but I do give it a fair beating some days.

        • @thefreelunch:
No issue wrong the warranty? Getting battery replaced?
I'm thinking of getting the latest S7 optus deal

      • +1

It's not just about that though… the S7 edge screen is also bigger (unlike the S6 edge vs. S6)

      • +1

Battery life on the edge is far better then the s7 non edge.

        • How's that possible? Bigger battery? Edge has larger screen

        • @albanyson: edge has bigger battery.

      • +1

Really? I use the edge all the time didn't think I would though.
It's great for shortcuts to apps instead of going back to the home screen.
Also with the edge touching problem it was driving me crazy was going to sell my s7 edge after only a few days of ownership, that was until I got my slim case that fixed the problem very happy now. EDIT: the case adds a physical barrier between your palm and the edge no more mistouches.

Not sure what your talking about there are plenty of cases for the edge and screen protectors aren't very necessary these days. Even if you are after one there are plenty of them to choose from matte plastic tempered glass coloured borders not sure what more you want from a screen protector?

        • Which case did you get?

        • Man if you go out on site and are clumsy like me then a screen protector is a big must. Especially when you're talking about a phone that is worth 1000 dollars. Compared to the s6, the edge has far less case options, I always liked the otterbox cases and you cant get one for the edge. Also with telstras new phone every 12 months deal you have to keep the phone in good condition to hand it back in.

        • @D6C1: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/262301410361?_trksid=p2057872.m27… it looks better in person, really impressed for $15.

        • @richy_o: I just searched it on ebay you can get it, or is that a different one?

        • @mrwillc: I have the s6edge and ended up getting one of these, I just dont like that the edge is still quite exposed at some angles. Just such an expensive phone to break accidentally. Thanks for linking me though

        • @richy_o: i tried put my phone on its side trying to make the screen edge touch the table but the case is preventing physical contact so it seems to be protecting it well even though it doesn't look like it.
so im assuming if a drop does crack the screen it wouldn't matter if it was a flat screen phone or and edge it would be the same result.

        • @richy_o: btw that is an s7 edge case not a s6

        • @mrwillc:

So this case converts an S7 Edge to an S7? Not a bad idea.

  • Geez, I read "$480.65 per month for Galaxy S7"…

    • :) Makes sense. Changed the title !

  • Why vodafone can reedem for gear vr?

    What about this plan?

    • Because Vodafone's plan is $70 a month so they can use the $5 a month to subsidise giving you the VR. This plan $5 cheaper so no VR.

      This plan connot

    • I recieved the GearVR bundled together with the phone.

  • +1

Upgrade to this, wait for the Note 7 or iPhone 7 or the next Nexus and buy outright? Decisions decisions.

  • +4

    Comes with EPL coverage too

    • The promotional message about this is very confusing.
At one point they said it's free if sign up before 31/7/16, $15 per month after 31/7/16.
Then at some other page they said it's free until 31/7/17…

Though OzBargainers probably know what it is.

      • Both are true, but it's poorly worded.

If you sign up to this (or certain other) mobile plans before 31/7/16, you get the first year's worth of EPL at $0/month (ie until 31/7/17).

If you wait until after 31/7/16 to sign up for an eligible mobile plan, and want EPL, you pay $15/month for the EPL subscription.

        • Exactly, poorly worded.

  • No Bonus Gear VR:

" Offer is available via redemption from Samsung. Promotion starts at 9.00 (AEST) 1 May 2016 and ends at 11.59pm (AEST) 30 June 2016. Claims must be submitted within 14 days of purchase. See www.samsung.com.au/promotions/gear-vr-offer for full T&Cs and further details."

Also Don't think it's applicable to businesses plans otherwise bonus two months off too, anyways good spotting and this one is better value and gives 300 minutes international unlike vodafone

  • +1

disappointing this about this Optus offer is that it is not very good compared to other deals.

Virgin are offering pretty much the same. If you are a student you get $5/moth off so it is the same. They also offer $20 your second or third bill.
Vodafone are $5 more expensive but still include the VR headset.

So essentially Optus are 'doing you a favour' by offering almost the same plan as everyone else and no sign up or retention offers.

    • +2

Optus will give an additional 10% off if you are a student too.

Don't forget, if you already have a plan with Optus. They will give you an additional 5GB for life of the plan. Essentially bringing this deal up to 12GB.
Deal details can be found via the Optus app.

      • -1

That's only if you buy this as a new service and have another service as well.

      • Sorry, but can't seem to find details of the extra 5GB via the Optus app.

Is there a webpage you could link to for this please?

I signed up to this yesterday in store after they agreed to match the online deal. The attendant did say that I would get the extra 5GB (as I currently have a plan with Optus), but the extra 5GB isn't showing in my data pool.

        • As a follow up, live chat confirmed the 5GB bonus data will be added to my plan/s after 5 business days.

Apparently, this offer (the 5GB bonus data which hueymentions) ends on 31st July (so the rep on live chat advised).

So for anyone in a similar situation to me, follow it up with live chat to confirm you'll get the extra 5GB data.

    • If you are already on an Optus contract needing to pay early termination fees to switch carriers and do not care about the VR headset (like me), then this is a nice deal. My only problem is, there are couple of nice phones coming out in the next 2 months and I am worried that I will miss out on them.

Wait. There is another problem. I will have no use for the international calls as the country I want to call is not listed. Virgin is the best for that.

      • What phones are you wanting to wait for? I'm in the dilemma of needing a new phone, but not sure of any phones that would make me want to wait. I was leaning towards taking the plunge on an S7 Edge, but after seeing this deal I'm quite tempted.

        • Note 7, iPhone 7 and the next Nexus.

      • I was told in store today Optus don't charge early termination fees?
Just have to payout the handset charge?

    • To be fair, Optus gives EPL too, and $20/month of the broadband (if you have broadband with them anyway), so depending on your situation, it might work better (I have a friend who signed up due to broadband discount alone, and other who took the cheapest plan just for EPL to replace his prepaid). And you can always try to ask Voda to match their offer for example, it may work (they can't match what they don't have such as EPL and broadband discount, or rollover data like Virgin, but they can match amount of data for example)

    • Virgin also offers $100 pre-paid credit card/gift card

Telstra does $75 / 10gb if you talk to their retention team like I did today. No VR but yes to Apple music.

      • How would one get in touch with Telstra's retention team?

    • Really? How do u get the student discount $5/month off from Virgin? I am a student and have signed up for it but didnt' get any discount.

  • Is this offer "online only"? Or can I walk into a store today and take home a shiny new S7 on this plan?

    • Just did a text chat with an Optus rep and he said it was online only.

    • I spoke with someone at my local Optus store and they said it's available in store

  • Just out of curiosity, how much does an S7 sell for if you were to buy outright?

    • +1

Still quite a bit at $989

    • $769 @ kogan

  • looks a good deal. if I hadn't taken the $40 a month 12 month deal, then I'd go for this, as the phone over that deal (less data) works out as being $600 over the life of the plan, and an s7 isn't' too bad to be 'stuck' with for 2 years!

    • perhaps you can switch to this without any charges (if you want) since you bought it very recently?

      • I had a chat, they said you can change no fees.

  • what - 500Mb + 500Mb of data?

    • No you have to select the $85 one. It will be discounted by $20 to bring the fee down to $65. It still goes as the "$85 MyPlan Plus".

      • hmmm ok

  • Anyone know if you can get the student discount (10% off) and stack the bundle bonus for a further $20 off?
    This effectively makes it $65-10%-$20 = $38.5?

    • Last time I checked, the discount was off my broadband, not the mobile.
BUT, I am on a promotional $75/month plan which is no longer available. So they have to "upgrade" me to a $90/month plan, and then apply the $20 discount, so my net discount is only $5/month. I say "upgrade" because all they do is jack up the price of my broadband package, I get nothing extra.

      • I see. Reading the landing page http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobile it doesn't mention that the $20 discount is on the provision you bundle perhaps implying that bundling is extra discount? So $85-$20(mobile special)-$20(bundle discount)= $45?

        • I haven't investigated the latest offer, might be worth doing the online chat and see what they say. My info was from an online chat about a month ago.

    • It would be $85 - $20 Discount = $65 - 10% student discount = $58.50

      • I thought the $85-$20 is separate to bundling discount/bonus? Thus $85-$20(mobile special)-$20(bundle discount)= $45?

      • I can confirm this is the case if you are eligible for UNIDAYS discount.

      • +1

The 20.00 discount only applies to your home/broadband optus service. NOT the mobile.

    • Didn't work when i tried to stack them, can anyone confirm?

      • You have ask via the chat, they will do it.

  • Damn it!!!!!! I only just signed up for S7 on the $70/ month plan with 3.5GB data last week!! I've sent Optus an email to see what they can do but this is annoying :(

    • Call them up. They should be able to give you this deal.

      • I spoke to one person and they said they can change the plan and said they will send me and sms with a link to confirm the changes. Link doesnt work. SO i spoke to another person who said i cant change to this new plan but best they can do is escalate it and see if theres anything they can do for me.

        • Did you get the extra discount?

  • -4

This plan is equivalent to Aldimobile $35pm plan. (+100 international mins, + 24 month contract).
So the phone is being priced at 30*24=$720 by optus.

The plan is much worse that the $40 optus 12 month sim only contract (24 month compared to 12, and also 7GB compared to 10GB). The plan's value is to me is more like $30p/m. So optus is charging (35*24=$840), almost the ebay price of the phone.

Personally, I would pass and can't be bothered to be stuck with optus for 24 months and risk exorbitant charges :)

    • -1

The Aldi Plan is $45 if you add 1GB to match to 7GB, so you're effectively getting the phone for $480 by your maths.

  • Is it sign up only via a desktop computer? Can't sign up via my mobile. Lame!

    • You can also online chat with them

      • That doesn't work either, all blacked out with no active link :-/

  • Really good deal, especially EPL subscription is included after free promo period ends in 2017, plus more data and international calls compared to $60/$65 plan

  • not bad, ends up being $648 for a galaxy s7 at the end of the 24 months. although for $40 a month on the plan you'd expect like 5gb data

    • Right now you can get 10GB for $40 on the SIM only plan. It's also a promotion.

  • any chance of having S7 Edge deal?

  • Does anyone know what Optus value the phone at (for if you have to cancel early)? I did try their live chat, but they wouldn't be able to tell me until I had signed a contract.

    • +1

When you add a phone into your cart and check out, you will see how much you are getting for the handset.

For GS7, $45 per month = value of the handset is $1080 and that is how much you have to pay them if you break contract (pro-rata)

      • Thanks. Unsure as to why their live chat person couldn't tell me this.

  • -4

Optus has the worst service ever!!!

    • Why? Recently I have great experience (last 3 years or so)

    • -1

Yeah phone calls cut out and sometimes don't even go through. Huge difference in coverage compared to Telstra and I'm not even in a rural area.

    • +4

And the network went down how many times?

    • +2

Great unfounded statement there. Everybody knows that Telstra is 1% better. Actual coverage in some remote areas, and better coverage in some semi-rural locations. Calling Optus, a cheaper service, "THE WORST SERVICE EVER!!!" is pretty ridiculous. I have been using it for approximately 4 years with no hassles.

    • johnno07/fidelio - u guys are so lucky.
I recently switched my internet provider to Optus. To my horror, they canceled my previous connection without informing me and left me stranded without internet for a week because they can't get a technician down to do it. If Optus cant even schedule a technician to me on time, then they shouldn't even cancel my previous internet connection. I called them since 2pm yesterday and till 10pm I was still on the phone with them and problem is not even solved. I've been transferred to several departments and non of them can help. Every time i call in, I have to wait over the phone for more than 1 hr before a technician picks up the phone.

FYI, my internet is not up yet.

      This is really frustrating.

      • I had a similar situation with Telstra. Took a month to fix. Literally ended up being the exact issue I had been telling them it was for a month. There's horror stories everywhere my friend.

  • +1

My S4 is still running like a champ. Probably pass and wait for S9 maybe.

    • Getting 5 years out of a phone is quite impressive. I'd expect the OLED screen to have lost much of its color by then, and the battery to need charging twice a day.

      • +1

Samsung Galaxy S4 has an easily replaceable battery, Cyanogenmod allows for Marshmallow update too.

As for OLED, well yes, that fades.
