  • so once again this is the equivalent Nvidia of….??

    • +2

GTX 680 according to Tom's GPU hierarchy.

      • +4

Tom's has some really weird benchmarking at times. This is definitely better than a GTX680. I wonder if they are are someone being biased for their own personal interests. I think this card is comparable to an overclocked GTX 960.

        • +2

definitely better than a GTX680… I think this card is comparable to an overclocked GTX 960.

But an overclocked GTX 960 is roughly comparable to a GTX 680.

After testing and comparing over a range of games and benchmarks settings, Tom's hierarchy chart puts all of these cards in the same tier:

          GTX 590, 680, 770

          HD 6990, 7970 GHz Ed., R9 280X, 380, 380X

They'll have fairly similar performance. Of course some will excel in some games over others, or at some resolutions over others, etc. But most of the time, most people just need to know roughly how fast it is so they have at least some idea what they are looking at (before they spend hours researching a card only to discover it's about half as powerful as they expected and they wasted their time).

That's what Tom's hierarchy chart is for.

        • A GTX 960 stock is already marginally better than a GTX 680 stock. (you can confirm this by looking at benchmarks from various sources). An OC version of the 960 should definitely be better than 680. I could be wrong, but I don't think they really had a GTX 680 overclocked version. Maybe a EVGA SC version? This means you don't have a guaranteed overclock speed on 680.

Anyways, Tom's is a good place to start but I don't think it is the best place to make your hardware choices. Unless I am reading the chart wrong, Tom has a RX 480 in the same tier as GTX 780. That is not great advice. The "Performance Hierarchy Table" feels more like a Nvidia price hierarchy table.

        • I have a 680 SOC version. It has 5 fans. So heavy and loud :/

    • +4

Probably ~15-20+% ahead of the GTX 960. The gap increases significantly with resolution. Benchmarks. The 380 would be approximately equivalent to the 7970 GHz Edition, as I believe it uses the same (or a similar) GPU core.

      EDIT: Some direct comparisons here.

    • GTX960 should be the same as R9 380

      GTX970 was the same as R9 390 , 390 was 8 gig where 970 was 3.5 gig

  • ok, sold. Might get two as well. Makes you forget the 480 exists at all.

    • +5

RX 480 would be a much better option over 2 380s. Uses half the power, should perform similarly in games that support crossfire and much faster in games that don't.

    • +3

yea. dont forget the heat this will generate

      • +1

That's a good thing considering where I live.

    • +1

SLI is almost never worth it.

    • +2

      2 of these = to $338.

The RX 480 is retailing for $369

these use up much more power, generate much more heat in your case and are based of an older architecture, plus DX12 support is crap.

      No way

      • ive got SLI, the heat is insane, it doesnt really bother me that much but you really have to experience it to see for yourself.
and the graphics are soooo sweet, eye candy :).

        • Remembering while these are not the latest architecture, they are also not that old (based on the r9 285 or GN 1.2). DX12 support on the 380 is very good (remembering that its GCN 1.2, not a rebranded 7970).

If I am not mistaken a CrossFire 380 is about a 290X, capped at 4gb as well. A 480 performs similarly but yeah at less heat, power, and potential CF game issues. I think a 4gb RX 480 Nitro is $370 so probably not worth crossfiring (could wait a month or two probably down to $350).

    Good deal for single though!

  • Should i bite the bullet, or wait for a gtx 970 for about 200~

    • +24

If the bullet has been fired, particularly in your direction, I would discourage an attempt at biting it - they typically travel in excess of 3000 km/h.

On another note, waiting will always yield better prices, but at the expense of potential previous enjoyment.

    • You'll be waiting a while for the 970 to drop to ~200.

Second-hand models still sell for ~$300, e.g. here.

      • On OCAU 980s have been around the $300 mark, picked up my MSI Gaming for $305 shipped.

        • +1

Yeah I recently got a 970 for $250 for my GFs rig

  • i would wait, the architecture of this card is technically 4 years old i.e the 7970

in terms of performance, the video drivers are not going to improve further and pretty much maxed out, if you buy in current gen cards, the drivers will improve as time goes by, so youre actually getting more performance than the new cards in their current state as time goes by.

    • this is why they can afford to drop these cards price, very shortly the newer gen cards prices will drop to what they should be once stock stabilizes

      • +1

its quite clear that ingram or synnex etc have a shipping container full of these things and need them gone before they go even more stale than they are now

      • I went with a rx470 from Amazon $$212 US ……. the prices. here will be good once the new cards hit the shelves in quantity

        • my two Asus RX470 strix cards are amazing .. they run at 35c idle and 53c FULL LOAD temps.. my total system power usage is 112w - Thats CPU, GPU, motherboard and drives.. best purchase ive ever made and all for $276AU each Delivered from Amazon.. took 1 1/2 weeks too

    • +9

That's not true at all. It's a rebranded 285 which was released about 2 years. It has newer features such as freesync support, whereas the 7970 doesnt. It's two different architecture (7970 1st gen GCN/285 3rd gen GCN) and doesn't really have anything in common with 7970, only similar performance.

Although i get the confusion, all this rebranding nonsense is pretty annoying.

  • PSU req for this?

    • +3

You'd be wanting at least a 500W power supply. Could probably get away with something like a VS450 (need 2x PCI-e power connectors), but 550W might be a better option to give a bit of headroom.

    • +1

~550W according to this site. http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page362.htm

Could probably get by on a 500W if you have a high quality psu though.

    • +2

      450-500 is plenty.

  • +5

I had this card before. In case anyone is interested, here is the benchmark of my current card (MSI Gaming X 1060 6GB Factory OC) versus the MSI Gaming R9 380 4GB (factory OC). Both comparisons are very accurate because apart from the GPU, my system has not been changed (in both scenarios, it had the same CPU, motherboard, & operating system)

    http://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/7022013/fs/9554027

    • In that case…the price for this deal would be about fair…the 1060 can be had for tad over $300

      • where?!

        • +1

He means the 3 gig one, cheapest 6gb gtx1060 was $369 locally. You want minimum 4gig for 1080p for modern games or more if playing on a 144Hz monitor or 1440p 60Hz.

        • You want minimum 4gig for 1080p for modern games or more if playing on a 144Hz monitor or 1440p 60Hz. 6gb is good amount of vram if considering upgrading your monitor in the future. Unfortunately nvidias gsync is still overpriced.

  • Starts Thursday

What time Thursday? Still old price and its waaaaaay past my bedtime.

    • +1

Do you really think those MSY guys work outside of business hours?

      • +4

Well their website looks very 2002 but surely a line of code like this can't be too hard

        if sys_date=01/09/2016 then price=$169 else price=$invalid

I might call them at 9, fully expecting to be on hold for an hour, then offer this line of code for additional discount.

        • +1

Good luck with all aspects of you plan except the waiting part. You won't need luck for that :P

        • +1

its part of the experience like being hungry in a restaurant and watching other people's food come out.

  • I have a 3GB Gigabyte R9 280X WindForce OC. I take it there is not much performance upgrade with this R9 380 over my current card?

    • +1

same same the 3 series really just adds memory.

      • -4

380 is pretty much a rebrand of the 280x which was a rebrand of a 7970. There are some minor differences. You can't CF them though.

    • +1

I have a 3GB R9 280X too… bought only a couple of years back for $400 (stupid cryptocoin mining boom). I probably should have waited for this, since I've hardly played anything but Lego games and Dolphin on it…

  • How would this compare to a 2GB 7800 series card?

  • I already have Gigabyte Radeon R9 280 3GB WINDFORCE Video Card in my system. Would it be a good idea to use the both cards in crossfire?

    • +1

      Not possible

  • Oh. I just paid $207 for the sapphire during the eBay 20% off campaign

  • -2

If you are thinking about this may aswell go for gtx970 imo

    • +7

      Am I missing something here?
I just went onto MSY page and the cheapest GTX970 is $399??
Bit of a hike over $169….

      • The cheapest is for $355 http://www.msy.com.au/qld/slackscreek/pc-components/15774--a… ,but it is still more expensive though :)

      • +1

Haha, agree. It's like saying if you are thinking about GTX 970, you may as well go for GTX 1070.

        • 1070 is beautiful though lol

        • @Godric: Tell me about it. I am spotting a new Asus ROG Strix 1070 at the moment :)

        • @edfoo:

          Excellent choice good luck!

I my self have the EVGA card and the performance is stella
Easily stable at 2000mhz core clock, you will definitely be satisfied with your purchase : )

    • +1

RX470 at $280AU delivered from Amazon or EVGA/ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1060 Mini 3GB for $280AU delivered

      • +2

Honestly for just more $25 at Msy you can have the Gainward 1060 3gb 100% under warrenty.

    • This is not that far off a 970 in performance and insanely cheap.

I have one of these and it runs dead quiet and plays most current games nicely at 1080p.

  • +2

Is it just me, or is the 240gb ssd for $75 not getting the attention it deserves?

    • I'm keen, but the online price is still showing as $86 for now

    • MLC Nand too :)

    • cloudy, you can always open up a new OB thread on that $75 SSD. Honestly it is a very good price.

  • If you have AMEX, can do the $40 back from $100 min spend on a 4gb rx 480 sapphire totalling $329 at MWAVE for a better deal than crossfiring these.

  • +4

Have this card, its pretty good!
runs battlefield 1 on high at 60fps fairly steady
    also running an i36100

    cheers!

    • What resolution?

      • 1080 60hz

1440p on high, you would probably need to look for something like a 1070

        • +1

surely not kapinny! nice though. how is battlefield 1?

        • @aromatase:

          Its good Aromatase

    • Just upgraded my 560ti SLI 1gb to this, Before I ran low settings at 60fps, NOW i run ultra at 55-63 fps steady on i5 2500k 4.2ghz, extremely happy with the purchase. Looks like my old ass system still has lots of life left. 1080p

  • +1

Hmmm… Wonder when it will start, still showing $249 at the moment

    • +2

This is MSY we're talking about here.

  • +3

    It's live now

  • Good for bitcoin and cryptomining

But you will need a number of these cards to be effective

  • Should I get this or a 750ti for $70? I only play csgo and rocket league. Possibly OW in the future. Don't really play AAAs and such on PC.

    • +1

If you are sure youre not gonna play the new stuff then that would be a pretty good buy at 70 bux.

Also to consider is the rest of your system that may bottleneck the 380.

      • Yeah good point. Thanks!

    • +1

Not worth getting more than a 750Ti for those games. $70 is a steal! Saves a bit of money for upgrades in the future if you need.

      • +1

Thank you for your input! Pulled the trigger on the 750ti:)

        • +1

Will save a lot in power, and heat output will be significantly lower also. The 750ti uses ~1/3 the power of the R9 380 (~60-70W compared to ~200).

    • +1

Where are you getting the 750Ti for $70?

      • Yeah, I'm interested as well. I looked around and the price is still hovering around $ 160

        • +1

Spaghettiman kindly pmed me and let me know that it was am eBay auction with the appy20 coupon. Great deal but I prefer new, especially with graphics cards.

  • +2

Bought one to use in a eGPU setup with my current laptop, thanks OP! Stopped me buying a new PCByte Desktop and a 1060GTX, saved about $1000. Big win.

    • Hope it works out well! What laptop and enclosure/connection are you using if you don't mind me asking.

      • +1

I have a HP Pavilion DV6 with a quad core i7. Too good to retire.

The eGPU connection is an EXP GDC "Beast" I got from Gearbest. I ordered it with a GTX960 but that never arrived, whole different saga altogether.

Only got the GPU last night but will let you know how it goes once it's all rigged up.

      • +1

Did the same thing. I'm on a L440 with an i7-4702MQ. I am running a EXP GDC Beast. Had to do the DSDT override and DIY eGPU Setup 1.3 PCI compaction to get it to work. Previously on a 7870 only the DSDT override was required

  • +3

These cards are damn good for 1080p, and are even better with DX12/Vulkan. Utilizing GCN 1.2, they also support some of the nicer features of AMD cards, such as Freesync, VSR, etc. Power usage, although not as efficient as any current gen, is still better than a lot of the R9 2XX series that it was made to replace. For $169, its a pretty damn good deal.

    • I bit the bullet and got it! It's so massive though - I got uncomfortable with the sag and ended up putting my case horizontally. Also had issues getting it to work as it wasn't recognised at all until I upgraded my motherboard bios.

Definitely an improvement over the old card I had and for the price it'll hold me for a year or more till a full system upgrade will be in order. Most games (besides Deus Ex) ran great at 1200p. Fallout is pulling 60 fps no problem.
