      id say its comparable to Thailand/Bali, the average meal costs around $10 AUD or less. Some hotels will charge in USD though.

  Sri lanka when i went in January was amazing. I would definitely recommend it over Thailand/Bali. Amazing beaches, good surfing friendly people very relaxed atmosphere.
