WD Red NAS Drives

Hey guys

Was looking at picking up a few WD Red drives for my NAS as they seem to have a good reputation. The 3 TB drives seem to be the best in terms of $/TB. Looking at the ebay sale with the 20% off code(CSUN20) it seems that futu online has the best deal for a 3TB WD RED coming in at $148. However Static Ice shows that stores like MSY have it for a normal retail price of $155. The $8 hardly seems like much of a saving.

I am kicking myself for not checking OzBargain and missing out on this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/262796 .

Should I go ahead and get these drives at this price or should I hold off for another deal? Are there any brands other then WD that I should be considering?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

  • $148 is a good price, you have to consider that MSY will charge shipping on top of that plus they may even have a surcharge as well.

    3TB : $155 ($51.67 $/TB) - US$109.00 -> $146
    4TB : $216 ($54.00 $/TB) - US$147.83 -> $198
    6TB : $348 ($58.00 $/TB) - US$233.52 -> $312

    Upshot is although the 3TB price is good, the issue ends up being space and power demands in a NAS. Bigger drives give more flexibility. In particular a deal on 6TB could bring the price close, or below, to the $/TB of the 3TB units

    I might look at the Toshiba X300 (a 7200rpm unit) that can be found for good prices - $236 imported deal. HGST drives have a good rep too. Seagate are OK.

    As per normal, it's best to try and not get the same batch for a bunch of disks you are buying - if there's something dodgy it pushes up your risk significantly.

  • I have 4 of the Red 3tb in my RN104. They've been performing flawlessly for the last however many years I've had them. Netgear's X-Raid 2 meant that I only started off with 2 drives, then added the other two over time to increase capacity.

    If you've got Amex you could try $40 off $100 spent at Mwave

    Eg, WD Red 3tb = $164.99 - $40 = $124.99 (plus delivery ~ $10 or free pickup if nearby)

  • Also chasing 3TB NAS drives, if you see a good deal come up, please post the link!

  • Not sure if you're still looking, but I've got a heap of WD 6tb reds from the USA for sale at the moment.
