Really good price considering Amazon US sits around $720-780AUD not including delivery.

  • +2

    great deal

the 8tb reds are close to $500 each on static ice

    • +2

Yeah, I am thinking about getting this just for the 2 drives..

      • +2

Then you can donate the case to poor me :)

  • How can I get VAT removed? Seems AUD 694.23 is my final price.

How can I get VAT removed? Seems AUD 694.23 is my final price.

VAT is 19% so do you really think that you're still being charged VAT? Not to mention it shows in the summary 0% VAT. You're using Amazon to do the currency conversion which clearly is not that smart way to buy.

      • Shit that's a lesson learned for me, I paid 694, I didn't know Amazons conversion was so ugly tbh :/

  • Are these particularly slow?

Could they be used with a media centre to stream?

    • wondering too

    • +1

Should be fine for media consumption, but they are USB/SATA so you'll need to connect it to something to play from it, no direct network connectivity

    • +1

If WD REDs are indeed in this enclosure, then this will absolutely be fast enough for media streaming, well beyond 4K. The USB connectivity will also be fast enough. Perhaps you are thinking of the Seagate Archive drives, those will be slow given they are using SMR technology.

      • +3

SMR HDDs read at standard speed, they just don't write as fast, so they'd also be fine for streaming.

        • +1

          I stand corrected.

  • +2

Could this be network attached to my router (Archer D7) via the "TO PC" USB cable?

    • Yeah it would work with that :) good thinking

    • +1

Archer D7 struggles with disk drives over 2TBs. Youd need to create partitions at 2TB each for the D7 to read it.

  • Thanks OP. Worked for me

  • Woah! That's aot of space!

Someone forgot to mark as NSFW

  • Here i thought that raid 1 was just a mirror and it would be 8tb rather than 16 if theres only two drives in it.

    • +1

raid 1 if used would half the capacity, yes. The device supports other options though.

    • Here i thought that raid 1 was just a mirror and it would be 8tb rather than 16 if theres only two drives in it.

What are you saying? This has two x 8TB drives installed which is 16TB. How you configure the drives is up to you, if you choose to use mirroring you may have 8TB of useable space but the unit is still 16TB.

Any idea about warranty? Either on the unit as a whole or if you remove the individual drives?

  • yea, but is it pr0n certified?

  • Any good deals on WD My cloud?

  • +2

Outstanding price for two 8TB Reds, but note that user reports seem to indicate the enclosure encrypts data in a way that makes it inaccessible via any other enclosure/interface (if the enclosure fails, you're reliant on backups):

    https://community.wd.com/t/wd-my-book-duo-data-forever-lost-…

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R10TXDC8NMKCH5/

    • +2

Just to clarify that, the drive is still usable outside the enclosure, used or not, but you'll need to wipe it clean.

The data that was on the drive will never be available again, as even another enclosure won't be able to decrypt it.

      • So to be 100% clear, I can buy this, open up the enclosure, remove the weird decrypting things and connect these drives using SATA in my desktop?

        • Yes, make sure you format them first.

    • Thanks for letting us know.
I have researched this issue and have canceled my order.
      Not worth it!

Noob Question. Can I use this as an archive storage to store all my P0RN AVI files and is it connected via USB? This is certainly more cost effective than buying 4TBs portable HDDs.

How is this more cost effective than buying 4TB portable drives for under $170 each from Amazon US?

      • U r not wrong there. I'll stick with 4TBs from amazon US.

      • +1

Well if you fill up a 8 drive bay with 8TB drives, you wouldn't need to buy another NAS as soon, had you filled them with 4TB

        • Well if you fill up a 8 drive bay with 8TB drives, you wouldn't need to buy another NAS as soon, had you filled them with 4TB

Who said anything about an 8 bay NAS? He wants USB attached storage and having 4 x 2.5" 4TB drives is the best option.

        • That takes 4 usb ports tho if he wants access to all of them tho? Which may not be the best option

        • @Morty:

That takes 4 usb ports tho if he wants access to all of them tho? Which may not be the best option

This is why USB HUBS were invented.

      • I thought 4 x $170 = $680

        Vs

        $663 for this deal?

Looks more cost effective to me?

        • I thought 4 x $170 = $680

          I said UNDER $170?

Last time I purchased they were USD$105 including shipping which is AUD$137.

          4 x $133.5 (postage is only around double for 4 drives) = $534.

I said under because the prices fluctuate like the exchange rate.

Looks more cost effective to me?

Uses more power, not as portable etc etc.

        • @Maverick-au: well then if it fluctuates as you say, sometimes it will be more cost effective and sometimes it won't. You're the one that stipulated the $170 figure.

        • @atlas:

@Maverick-au: well then if it fluctuates as you say, sometimes it will be more cost effective and sometimes it won't. You're the one that stipulated the $170 figure.

I said under $170 and this deal fluctuates on pricing as well like all Amazon deals. It's not just the price either that makes this more cost effective, a failure of one drive in the NAS means loss of all data as does the failure of the controller whereas a failure of a drive means a loss of only 4 TB and a controller fail is a simple swap.

        • @Maverick-au: yes understand your point re pricing. As for a NAS application, it really depends on the scale of your storage needs.

If someone is planning to use these as internal drives in a NAS or a Microserver, and envisages needing more than 16tb, then you would go with these 8tb drives because you could expand capacity up to 32tb in the future.

If your data is so critical that you are worried about losing half your data as opposed to the whole drive then you should have a proper backup anyways.

  • Great price.

gud price but useless to be frank

you will get a ton of negs,
but i totally agree with you, they come up with these huge capacities, which is pretty nice, but so what?
oh, im sure plenty of people will all of a sudden question how they lived their lives with a 16TB storage thingo, ha ha

Maybe because it allows people to reduce the number of drives they have and/or to have their data all online and/or whatever the hell people want to use it for like 4K video.

Using your logic we would all be back in the dark ages in caves.

spoken like the perfect consumer lol

          Wut?

If you're using any form of rubber wheels, you agree with him! Why else upgrade from stone?

OK that's a drastic case, but to call technical development 'consumerism' is just nonsense.

        • @millusions: Oh dear - Many people use these to store very large digital media, perhaps temporarily in uncompressed format - This data is huge, this is just one use. I have 20TB of storage in RAID1, it's a necessity, I couldn't do without it.

If the drives in the housing are indeed WD RED 8TB, then these are a great and reliable drive.

They do not "come up with these huge capacities, which is pretty nice, but so what" for just home consumers - We live in a world driven by technology. The constant increase in capacity is not driven by the home-consumer in mind, think business, think Cloud.

I feel like trying to explain why we are constantly expanding and increasing our media formats and sizes, but I really think there is just no need to O.O

640K ought to be enough for you, I presume?

        • 640K ought to be enough for you, I presume?

          16K is all you need.

      • I've got 16TB or so of shit. I collect music bootlegs mostly, dvds and lossless audio cds and now hd video. All relatively rare and candid content if you're into that sort of thing and not all easily replaced despite the adage of 'once its on the internet it never goes away'. I'm somewhat of a cheapskate/frugral type and have been waiting on a deal like this for a very long time which will finally give me the opportunity to backup all my 1, 2, 3, and 4tb harddrives into one easily managed storage solution. My priority for mass storage has always been safe redundancy over speed so unless I'm mistaken this is pretty much ideal if I'm too lazy to build my own NAS. Just over AU$1300 for 4 harddrives though. That will be one of the most expensive entertainment related purchases in my life. I don't know, maybe I should be buying it just to take out the harddrives and put them in a NAS anyway, just on account of the price of the high capacity drives. I really hope this price is still available when I wake up tomorrow.

  • Much awesome! I hardly fill up 3TB for my work so luckily, I shall pass :)

  • Great price…about $300 cheaper than local stock.
For a photographer such as myself these enclosures are great and the bigger the capacity the better.
Always have a couple of backups for photos, a psd file with a few layers soon hits 2+gb in size.

    • Photographer here that was looking into these for photo storage a few months back, these are terrible due to the way they encrypt the data. If the enclosure fails, theres no way to retrieve the data from a single disk (assuming RAID1). So you still have a single point of failure. Personally I went with 2 8tb drives in single enclosure which I clone with Carbon Copy Cloner.

      • I have 3 of the 8tb ones like you mentioned. If I was buying these then I would be getting 2.

Still tempted to get one and take the drives out for internal us. Have a heap of 2tb ones that these can easily replace.

will they package the unit carefully? Bit worried about dead on arrival (HDD)

    • I bought some single 8tb mybook from Amazon Uk during a past deal and they were just in another box with some big bubble padding. Outside box showed no sign of damage.

    • You'd think it'd be in original packaging so nothing to worry about imo. It's the bare drives that'd worry me.

      • whats the course of action on dead on arrival?

        • Contact Amazon, so far their customer service have been one of the best, at least for Amazon US

        • +1

whats the course of action on dead on arrival?

          What do you think?

          A) Contact Amazon and they will sort it out immediately and at no cost.
          or
          B) Return it to the German embassy.

Do you guys think that this can be delivered into a Parcel Locker? Is the final delivery entity AusPost?

  • Will these drives be covered under Western Digitals warranty even if taken out of the enclosure?

    • Looking at the pics of the item, it looks like the case is made to open and remove the drives. Unlike the single 8tb mybook where you would have to break the case open to get the drive out.

So in theory you can take them out and do with them as you see fit. If one dies you put it back in the case it came in.

  • hmm if you order 2 of them you gotta pay GST of EUR$88.54. stinger and a half. What do I do, just make two seperate orders? Ask a friend to buy one for me? Is that illegal/fraudulent at all?

    • Have one delivered to your work. Another delivered to home/parcel locker?

      • they made us promise we wouldn't do that but maybe just once would go unnoticed

    • You can have different shipping addresses on amazon…send them to a relative or a friend.

  • +1

How are people getting these shipped to Australia ? When i try to ship to Australia it won't let me, are people using reship services ?

  • great deal, but the HHD's are the best part of it for the price, and this configuration isnt something im interested in though. Id say its for important documents you wona mirror, rather than movies or video.

    • I'm on the fenceon this purchase and may miss out in the meantime but could you elaborate on why you think these are better suited to mirroring documents rather than video files? The bulk majority of the most important stuff I want to back up on them is DVDs and video files

      • well they are super reliable red drives, and adding the mirroring means they are very expensive for just keeping torrents on that can be re downloaded or not needed after watched. If you are planning on keeping priceless home videos of family or children then they would be good. However, for the former even green drives in mirrored would do or just green drives without mirroring. I might get them just for data documents I guess and only for backups without the mirroring, normal pc is the other mirror ;-)

        • ok thanks for clarifying. yeah a significant chunk of the content I want to put on them is not easily redownloaded due to availability and also the download speed available to me.

This looks great and I really want it but I really dont need it (atleast not yet)!

  • Shows as not available for delivery to Aus for me?

EDIT: Nevermind, didn't have Amazon.de as shipper.

  • If this fails you will loose more data than if you had 4x4TB portal HHD.
Also this won't be easy to carry around.
I prefer the 4TB portable drives, but that just my preference.

    • Problem with the portables is performance and reliability. I agree backup is better option but the red class drives are higher run time for continuous operation. Portables are designed for more intermittent use. I wouldn't trust them for continuous use.

Also you have the issue with capacity and managing more drives and raid isn't really an option to portables. Also, wouldn't be using them internally if outside enclosures again based on the drive tech.
