Does anyone know if you can pull the drives out of the case? Can the pulled out drives still have their warranty claimed?

    • I would assume that pulling out the drives would be under "modification" and hence I am assuming no.

      • Does Amazon actually make you return items to the US for warranty claims?

        • +1

Yes they make you return the items to USA but they will pay for the postage

I was thinking of getting one until I saw some comments about the heating issue.

    • there's no comments about that here?

      • I have WD and Seagate desktop USB drives in plastic cases and they all get very hot, you only know if you look. I stop using them at about 50degrees

  • Which one is faster?

    • -2

They're both desktop drives so 5,400 RPM.

      • +1

These actually contain the 5900 RPM archive drives, so while read performance is pretty good, write speeds can be extremely variable (dropping down to sub 25MB/s) depending on the workload.

  • What are the differences between the models besides the looks and price? Is there an advantage buying the plus over expansion?

  • Can anyone confirm if the devices have SATA inside ?

Desperately waiting for the 16tb Mybook Duo to reappear on amazon.de at the right price again (2x 8tb WD Reds inside)

    • Why .de specifically?

      • +1

Most likely to be cheapest from there.. they had it at $670AUD recently.

      Cool story bro.

    • I got mine pretty fast, Off topic but I took the WDRED drives out of it for my NAS and I am unable to put 2 x samsung drives in it, would you know how to get non WD drives working in the duo?

      • No, I kept them in there. I'd like to know too, because if I got a second unit I'd be taking the drives out. Although I do have some wd green I could put in if need be

  • Thanks ordered one with referrer discount.

  • Do they offer the same 3-year warranty as Aussie sellers when buying from Amazon?

    • +2

      yes, seagate warranty is global

  • +8

Keep in mind these contain the Seagate archive (SMR) drives (http://www.storagereview.com/seagate_archive_hdd_review_8tb), not conventional desktop drives.

This means they are great for write-once or archival type of storage as the name implies, but performance tanks pretty quickly if you are doing a lot of random (re)writes or are planning to shuck the drives and stick them in a NAS.

    • I like how they make it clear in the product literature that these are SMR drives.

  • Almost bought one. Excellent price.

  • I noticed the 4TB is on sale as well, wonder if you could get a 10% price match at Officeworks ?

    • +1

Maybe if the work experience kid serves you!

  • If these were internals is be all over them
