Well, who would have thought hiking poles would be such a popular item? I guess the season has just begun. We're currently out of stock on the Trail Back but do have the Trail and Trail Pro still, and several other poles. If you order the Trail Back your order will be dispatched after 28th September 2016.

To pole, or not to pole. That is the question. Frankly, I'm pro-pole. Obviously, because I work for an camping and hiking shop and want people to buy them, but also because I use them and swear by them.

Whether it's for an extra bit of leverage going uphill or a bit of knee-saving stability going downhill, hiking poles act as an extra set of legs. As one of our blog writers, Bob West, wrote last year:

"Some 15 years ago I tentatively bought my first pair of walking poles, worried that I was simply following the newest trend. But when using them I felt good, walking seemed easier. There appeared to be less stress on my battered knees, even downhill with a pack on my back, and my upper body was now playing a part in ascent and descent."

And my favourite poles? The Black Diamond Trail Back Hiking Poles.

What's So Good About The Black Diamond Trail Back Poles?

  • They're easy to adjust. Some poles have a twist-lock mechanism. These have the FlickLockā„¢ mechanism. You simply draw the section out to where it needs to be (there's measurements on the the shaft) and pull the lock shut and you're done.

  • They're super comfortable. The ribbed rubber grip feels nice in the hand and as your oil and sweat start to infuse with it, will become even more comfy. There's also a foam grip extension to give even more range as to where to grip it.

  • They pack down small. Small enough to clip to the side of your backpack when not in use.

@paul-snowys: Always love the service from you guys. Bought 2 times before.

Nothing hard core Sir. Just heading up to Muller Hut and spend a day or 2 up there.

@tomleonhart: Our pleasure! Thanks for buying from us again. Mueller Hut - I was up there in 2009. It's really a beautiful spot - it's fun just sitting there on the deck, watching avalanches crash their way down onto Mueller Glacier before you!

I've got no idea if these are a bargain, but a great description and helpful store rep deserves a plus vote!

    • Thanks Claude! Glad you like the description. Pretty sure we have 'em for the cheapest price in Australia and they're well below RRP, so that's pretty bargainy I reckon. :P Cheers, Paul

  • This deal went off, guys. We've sold through a chunk of our stock quicker than expected. I'm going to talk to our purchasing people and see how long for us to get the new stock in before opening it up again. :)

  • are there any poles that can doubleup as a camera monopod?

    • There is a nifty little accessory you can get for the Leki range of poles that will allow you to attach a camera, a la monopod. And they also do the Photosystem pole which is pole/monopod. :) If this is something you want to order, let me know. Cheers, Paul

On a few occasions I have seen people shopping at Myer using hiking poles. I don't get it.

    • Haha. Some of the outdoorsy older folk prefer a walking pole to a conventional walking stick!

Which would be better for hiking, these or jousting sticks?

    • +1

Haha. Jousting sticks? But only if you got them from the Trading Post. "Tell him he's dreaming'"
