I currently have the breville bes870 with grinder on top (https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/breville-the-barista-espresso…)
would this stand alone grinder make much of a difference?

    • +1

This grinder is different to the one on the BES870 as my father is law as that machine. You can request a free shim pack from Breville fore this grinder to get the finest grind possible. I love my grinder!

      • what is the need to grind so fine? i tried it on mine and too little powder filled the basket since it was so fine

if i increased the dosage to accommodate and kept the tamp pressure consistent, i either get black sludge or nothing comes out cause its too fine

grind setting 9 with 16.5 seconds of grind time usually works for 90% of beans

        • If you want to make Turkish style coffee, or other styles of coffee where you just put finely ground coffee in the cup and pour hot over over it, then leave the coffee to sediment, you need it extra fine.

  • Thanks, purchased.

  • +1

What's so amazing about this grinder? Just asking. Btw, my brain assumes "smart" doesn't equal durable and long lasting.

    • +2

You can adjust the "fineness" of the grind as well as the grinding time in seconds (down to the 0.2s). This makes it easy to get a consistent shot every time. We use one with our Rancilio Silvia and have never felt the need to upgrade the grinder.

Our first one lasted 3 years and then broke down. There was a piece of plastic from the coffee bean bag (the air vent) that got into it and something in the motor mechanism broke. Bought a replacement straight away.

    • +3

It's considered the best value grinder for coffee enthusiasts without going too expensive. It has adjustable dose time and grind settings (that you can save) so you can tweak and pull a decent shot.

      • Exactly, easy to use, and good quality relative to price. It's a long way away from being a 'good' grinder, but it is also so much cheaper.

Worth noting however that it is an 'appliance' style grinder, expect 3-5 years out of it if you've done alright. For $170 though it is an amazing deal for anyone who makes coffee at home and isn't currently using a burr grinder.

    • +1

Reiterating what others have said, it performs extremely well, is highly customisable, is easy to operate, easy to clean and punches above it's price. It's often considered the best value grinder <$500.

You can alternate easily between grind size for for filter coffee, espresso, aeropress, drip, percolators etc.

    • Went from using the grinder that comes with the Sunbeam 6910 (440 or 430 I think was the model) to this grinder and it was miles better. Very consistent going compared to the Sunbeam. Get one.

  • +2

Good Guys have 20% off with COFFEE20 code on their website for coffee related equipment at the moment.

But a great coffee grinder, mine had been flawless and no complaints in the 1yr+ that I've had it.

    • +4

COFFEE20 applies only to coffee machines - just tried it with the grinder with no success

      • +1

And you are completely right. That will teach me to read my emails properly! (But probably not lol) :D

  • Am I going to be able to sell my EM0440 grinder that comes with the Sunbeam EM6910?

    • Bay it for about $50-75 if new or little used. Even if you can't it worth getting the Smartgrinder (see my comment above).

  • +2

Very misleading price at the good guys, no one have received the second $25 code yet, and the first has expired ages ago. And TGG should be smart enough not to allow stacking coupon.

  • I'm getting the code can't be applied to some of your items.

I only have this item in my cart…

    Does anyone know why?

    • Did you already use the coupon for another purchase?

      • Nope

  • The Philips noodle maker attachments are also cheap on myer ebay

This grinder has some issues apparently after a while it will not ground because of the gears breaking or something.

    • This happened to me once and I just gave it a quick clean with a brush and was all good again.

    • mine has been going strong for 2 years. No problems.

  • I have this Sunbeam EM0480 Coffee Grinder for more than 2 years and still in excellent conditions.

    • +1

I've got the same grinder as you and I've had mine for what must be close to 5 years now… had a slight grind adjustment issue but Sunbeam support were fantastic, sent out a spare washer that took 1 min to install and has been perfect ever since… it's a work horse unit but also been looking into the Breville for this deal but the Sunbeam unit in all honesty just never breaks (kinda like my TV, I want a new one (don't need a new one) but can't accept throwing a perfectly good item away for something that will do the same job really)…

  • Hi Guys, I am keen to get a coffee machine from TGG store today. Anyone here has an extra $25 code i could use? Happy to swap with my next code which should come in the next couple weeks (i hope).

    Thanks!

    • +1

First batch of code already expired. Second will arrive when price goes up

  • These are great!

  • I've been contemplating an upgrade from Sunbeam EM0480 to this grinder for a while now. This deal was the tipping point, so now I wait for delivery.

    Thanks for posting the deal.

    • I've been using the Breville Smart Grinder for a few days now and it is definitely an upgrade from the Sunbeam EM0480.

First up, the Breville makes hardly any mess when compared to the Sunbeam. What little mess there is, is trivial to clean up.

In side-by-side comparison, besides being quieter than the Sunbeam, the Breville produces a more even particle size, which results in better extraction and less channelling. At under $170 delivered, the Breville was definitely a very worthwhile purchase.

About the only downside to the Breville grinder is the power consumption. It consumes a tiny bit of power even when not in use, because the power supply and micro-controller still run in standby mode. If you listen carefully, you can hear the slight buzzing of the switchmode power supply. I don't see this as a big issue for most users, but if it is a concern you can always turn it off at the electrical outlet.

  • We had a Sunbeam EM480, and now have this model… Personally I can notice quite a difference, and the auto dosage is fantastic. It's also far less messy.

This one's been going well for almost 2 years, we had the similar older model for about 3 months but it was destroyed by a volcanic looking rock in our beans… (mind you it looked like a bean, and was the same weight….).

Paid 170 for it, would spend $200 again if we need another.

    • +1

Yes, the Sunbeam ones have mad static that makes the grinds very messy.

  • ok… what to do with my 1 year old Breville BCG600SIL?

    • Use it for another bean variety (decaf?).

  • I have no need but I oddly have an inclination to buy one. Wonder what my therapist will say about that.

    • Coffee is my therapy

  • +1

Is it bad that I want to buy one as a spare? Dam you oz bargain! I knew I shouldn't of come on here.

    • You just need to determine if it is your OzBargain or caffeine addiction that is driving these crazy thoughts…… if it's the later, then I think you should definitely buy a spare! (see my post above… one simple, tiny rock disguised as a coffee bean can cause headaches, poor work performance, and anger towards the coffee supplier….)

  • Getting an error checking-out on eBay?

    Anyone else?

    • Yeah I had 4 items when I checked out and only two went through. Had to use someone else's paypal account to use CODE15 again.

    • Yes I was having alot of trouble with the code 2 hours ago. I kept going back and forth until I got it.
One of my attempts was turned down through an email from eBay.
But I got it through in the end.

      Persevere, you must.

  • Seems like the CODE15 15% off discount for the items on the myer ebay store is always calculated a few cents off.

The total before the code was $239.97 AUD, 15% off this price should be $36 OFF and the credit card should be charged $203.97 but instead it was charged $203.99.

    • +1

Contact eBay / Paypal and lodge a dispute. ;-)

  • Is this the same grinder included in the good guys breville combo?

    • Yes

  • This is a great price for a very good grinder, it would typically be compared to much more expensive 'proper' grinders like the Compak K3 for ~$500 (consensus is grind quality is getting there, but probably not as durable). I've been using its predecessor, the BCG800, every day for over 4 years and it works as new. Definitely recommend
